Se llama virar por avante cuando orzamos con el timón hasta pasar el viento por la proa, también podemos virar en redondo (trasluchar) cuando cambiamos el viento arribando hasta pasarlo por la popa. Es una maniobra que, llevada a cabo en equipo, con suavidad, seguridad y precisión, consigues cambiar de rumbo y hacer que el barco no se pare. We were sailing out liveaboard sailboat/raceboat up the coast, and almost home under the golden gate bridge. Just 15 miles form the gate, we noticed a problem: the engine temp alarm, and no input to the RPM gauge/tacometer. A telltale sign that the engine belt is broken! We rolled around with no wind and no engine, tools flying across the room, and no steerage. We were able to get a new belt on eventually, and most importantly, we got back to the dock just in time to get burritos at our favorite burrito place!

► The Fédération des Industries Nautiques (France’s Nautical Industries Federation), which brings together the majority of French manufacturers in the sector, has just released its figures for the 2022/2023 financial year and has indicated the trends for 2024 at a press conference held on a barge at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. The survey acknowledges there was a post-Covid boom period, with new yacht registrations showing a sharp decline of 23.1% compared to the 2021/2022 period. This drop mainly affects the dayboat motor market for boats under 7 m/23 feet (down 27%) as well as the monohull sailboat sector from 9 to 16 m/30 to 52 feet (down 28%), both of which are struggling to cope with the increasingly attractive multihull offer – this growing by 5%, buoyed by the dynamism of power multihulls. There is also a growing interest in river and inland waterway cruising - a sector where multihulls could gain a foothold. According to the FIN, these figures for the French market also reflect those for Europe and even for the world market as a whole. As for 2024, according to Jean-Paul Chapeleau, the vintage promises to be one of “Market readjustment and a return to normal”.
