I  segnali speciali sono costituiti da boe o mede di varia forma dipinte di giallo e sormontate da un miraglio giallo costituito da una croce di Sant’Andrea. Di notte mostrano una luce gialla a lampi. Questi segnali speciali non sono da considerare come un aiuto alla navigazione e di solito si usano per indicare particolari zone come aree protette, zone con limiti di velocità, aree di ormeggio o la presenza di cavi e condotte sottomarine, la presenza di idrovore, inclusi tubi di fognatura con sbocco a mare.
