While it's important to check expiration dates because its the law, ultimately doing this quick check is critical for the safety of you and your guests. For example, pyrotechnic flares expire 42 months after date of manufacture and have an expiration date stamped on them. Fire extinguishers now must be replaced at least every 12 years. And even automatic inflatable life jacket bobbins need to replaced regularly. With our three sailing dogs back onboard, we set off on our longest passage yet: 40 hours across the Mediterranean, two nights at sea, fiery sunsets, star-filled skies, and the steady rhythm of open water carrying us towards a brand new continent. Halfway along the Tunisian coast, we tried to drop anchor for a short rest — only to be told by the coastguard that anchoring wasn’t allowed. Tired but determined, we pushed on through a second night passage before finally reaching Monastir Marina. At last, Kaia is safely tied up in her new winter berth in Tunisia, where we begin life as full-time liveaboards in North Africa.
