1st November 5pm Update – 3 Hours into the 2024 Melbourne to Devonport Race The fleet is settling into Bass Strait, enjoying flat seas and 15 knots from the south in what has been termed "peachy conditions." Leading the fleet are MRV and eXtasea, with the fleet staying just east of the rhumb line. In an interview at 4pm, Rod Smallman on Maverick predicted that those who pick the right time to tack may have the advantage, as they await a wind change later tonight. He went on to suggest that it could turn out to be a small boat race for handicap honors given the predicted conditions, though tactics will play a large part. The fleet is closely packed, with each tracker update giving everyone a chance at the handicap win. On the other hand, the atmosphere both on and off the water has never been better. The trade winds, in fine form at between 20 and 25 knots, undoubtedly had something to do with it... The five entrants in CSA 1 enjoyed superb courses towards Saba, Saint-Barts and Anguilla. The HH66 Lee Overlay Partners (ex Nemo) put on a great show, impressively flying a hull and, above all, peak speeds pushing 30 knots. The Gunboat 72 Layla was not to be outdone, with her GPS recording a top speed of 24.5 knots. The La Grande-Motte shipyard's first flybridge catamaran won the overall race on corrected time. The Diam 24 fleet was of course severely tested by the choppy conditions, but there too, they put on quite a show. In this fury of spray and exciting runs, the crew of Anomaly came out on top, leaving their rivals with no chance of a rematch. For the past two years, the CMC has been running a second division called Rally. This year, the 9 participants were accompanied - and looked after - by our Marketing Director Gwen Dorning.
