This video is about New Jeanneau 440 Sun Odyssey Sailboat Preview By: Ian Van Tuyl Jeanneau 440 The Jeanneau team in conjunction with Phillippe Briand have been busy totally renewing the Sun Odyssey line ready for the 2018 season and beyond. The first of this new range will be the Sun Odyssey 440, a completely new design which is packed with innovative ideas and features, sharing several key attributes of the larger Jeanneau Yacht range. She has a wide bodied hull with large rectangular black hull ports on each side, set above a distinctive hard chine that reaches all the way from the stern almost to the bow, which is fitted as standard with a bowsprit. All versions also feature twin rudders. The rig is stayed fully outboard and has a particularly low gooseneck height that will make tending classic mainsails much easier and safer. However, it is not until you step aboard that the real innovations become fully apparent. The cockpit is cunningly and uniquely designed to place the twin wheels and primary winches slightly inboard, thus allowing a safe walkway outboard of the wheels around to the sidedecks effectively inside a high bulwark that is elegant, safe and reassuring. Crew and guests can therefore move between the cockpit to go forward without any undignified scrambling across cockpit seats, cushions and occupants. The cockpit also holds more surprises as in "relaxation mode" at anchor, the cockpit seat backs can cantilever to create two huge flat lounging areas, perfect for sleeping under the stars... and if heading for the beach, there are even removable cockpit fridge and bbq units. The interior is simply cavernous for a 44 footer, with modern "loft" apartment styling, a gently raked companionway plus cabins with wide doorways without threshold steps or headroom restriction maximizing ease of movement all well illuminated by the abundance of light coming from the hull and deck windows and hatches. The galley is proudly displayed at the heart of the accommodation, also with new innovative ideas including a pop-up microwave that keeps work surfaces free and tidy when not in use. Sailing performance, as to be expected from a Briand design, is said to be very good, which is not surprising with the generous rig, chines and twin rudder configuration. Much more information on the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440 will shortly be available on the Jeanneau website and through the Jeanneau dealer network.
