I Templari hanno avuto, nella città di Molfetta, un ruolo fondamentale, oltre che religioso-politico e militare, anche nello sviluppo dell'architettura e tessuto urbano durante il periodo delle Crociate. I Templari era un ordine religioso cavalleresco che ha da sempre suscitato un notevole interesse, date anche le numerose leggende che ruotano attorno al loro nome, alle loro ricchezze e potere.
