After a month away, I'm back in my tiny fishing village on Amami Oshima. Twenty-nine people. This has become my longevity laboratory and a base from which I am exploring one simple question: What helps people remain healthy, independent, and engaged well beyond the average healthy lifespan? Meeting face to face with a green turtle always makes the dive and this is a fantastic site for meeting these chill turtle dudes. The Shallow Wrecks of Butler Bay, St Croix is a fascinating wreck dive for all skill levels and features: a NorthSea Trawler (Suffolk Maid); a tugboat (Northwind); a massive oil barge (Virgin Islander); NOAA’s HydroLab (Aegir), which was decommissioned in 1985; and the remains of several Hess Oil Trucks. With it’s wheelhouse starting at 20′, The Northwind Tugboat was used in the TV movie “Dreams of Gold — The Mel Fisher Story” and is a photographer’s favorite.
