Tali casse servono per alleggerire o appesantire zone dello scafo svuotandole o riempiendole di acqua di mare con apposite pompe. In alcuni tipi di moderne imbarcazioni a vela da regata, ognuno dei due bordi è dotato di tale cassa. Navigando di bolina la cassa del bordo di sopravvento viene riempita per diminuire lo sbandamento. catamarano: (s.m.) (Terminologia) catamaran, multihull Imbarcazione, normalmente a vela, dotata di due scafi paralleli e simmetrici, uniti con traverse metalliche o con strutture di vetroresina. Confrontato ad imbarcazioni monoscafo di uguale lunghezza è in grado di sviluppare velocità maggiori, dato il minor peso e superficie immersa.
