Although the island-continent of Australia has only 26 million inhabitants - just 8% of the population of the United States - it nevertheless boasts a huge community of sailing enthusiasts and yacht builders are also well established. This context has been conducive to the holding of a major international boat show in Sydney since 1968. A second major event was launched in 1989, at the Sanctuary Cove marina complex at the northern end of the Gold Coast, and in 2008, the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (just) beat its rival to the south. The 2024 edition, held from May 23 to 26, attracted almost 50,000 visitors, 300 exhibitors, 740 boats and no fewer than 2,500 boating products. We bought a canyoning harness before leaving Australia and it was still adjusted for Carolyn’s small size, so she was the one to try it first. The fourth mast step was too stiff to be opened so that’s as high as she climbed. We’ll need to carry some kind of persuader to open them, until they free up a bit. After that first climbing effort we had a second go in the fading light, with the two halyards again but also the winch this time. Much easier, for her! :-)
