Our stay in Airlie Beach started peacefully, but things took a turn when a neighboring catamaran dragged its anchor and crashed right into our bow, leaving us with some unexpected damage. Once the dust settled, we pulled up anchor and set sail for Gloucester Passage to do a little exploring—though, truth be told, there wasn't much to see! From there, it was time for a big push: a 110-mile passage to Townsville. Episode 271 We’re in Townsville, and what started as a routine outboard fix quickly turned into an absolute mechanical marathon. 😅 First, our dinghy outboard stops passing water. We head down to a local breakers here in Townsville to grab some replacement parts, but after putting it all back together, things go from bad to worse. A closer look under the hood reveals the engine is completely rotted out and totally worthless. RIP outboard. 🪦 Desperate to get back on the water, we jump on Facebook Marketplace and find another secondhand outboard. It looked great running on the stand, but let’s just say we got completely ripped off. Episode 268 Leaving the remote shores of Stanage for a 150-mile passage to the Whitsundays, we knew the navigation would be technical. We didn't expect to do it blind. As night fell, our AIS system suffered a total failure in the middle of a high-traffic shipping lane. Episode 267 We’re leaving the turquoise waters of Great Keppel Island behind and heading somewhere most boats never go. After an incredible time exploring the hidden gems of Great Keppel, it was time to pull anchor and find some solitude. We navigated a tricky, narrow entrance to find a "no-name" anchorage where the forest literally meets the sea. Total isolation, just us, the beach, and the birds. But the real culture shock came next. We sailed north to Stanage, a tiny, remote town at the end of 60 miles of grueling dirt roads. With only one shop and a handful of locals, it’s about as "Outback" as a coastal town gets. Episode 266 The contrast of the Queensland coast is on full display in this episode! We start our stay in Gladstone anchored near a massive coal power station, only to wake up the next morning with the boat completely blanketed in black coal dust. It was a mess, but the journey had to continue. After a tricky search for a new anchorage around the industrial harbor, we eventually made tracks for the exit and set our sights on Great Keppel Island (Woppa). The passage turned into a wild ride with 30 knots of wind and big following seas—true blue water sailing at its most exciting! Once safely anchored in the turquoise waters of Great Keppel, we head ashore to explore: Wildlife Encounters: Meeting some very bold (and hungry!) local birds at the cruiser camp.
