The final offshore stage of The Ocean Race Europe 2025 started with painfully light winds as the IMOCA fleet left Genova for the 1,600-nautical mile sprint to Boka Bay, Montenegro. On board Malizia – Seaexplorer, Boris Herrmann and crew fought through a slow first night at sea, drifting along the Italian and French coasts and constantly switching sails to keep the boat moving. At times the fleet managed bursts over 10 knots, but mostly it was about patience, focus, and trimming every puff of breeze. By Monday afternoon, the fleet had compressed again in a wind hole southeast of Nice, with just a dozen miles separating first to last. From the shore team’s tireless work on land to the crew’s relentless effort at sea, this episode shows the heart of Team Malizia during Leg 4 of The Ocean Race Europe. The big positive from this leg, despite the setback, is that we kept our spirits high and really enjoyed the sailing. Even when it became clear we couldn’t catch the Canadians, we pushed the boat to the max, proof of our great team spirit. We are a diverse mix of nationalities and cultures, and for Loïs and Cole this is their very first major IMOCA season. Everything is new and exciting, and yet no one loses motivation just because we’re further back. We fight to the very end, with full commitment. Of course, slipping into sixth place was tough to swallow, but 24 hours later, the frustration is gone. Day 3 of Leg 4 finds Team Malizia locked in a fierce mid-fleet battle, holding 5th position as the fleet pushes north. After a brutal passage through the Strait of Bonifacio – from blasting along in 40 knots to suddenly drifting in no wind – the leading pack managed to escape while Malizia and the chasing boats fought to break free along the Sardinian coast. At midday today, fifth-placed Team Malizia was around 50 nautical miles behind fourth-placed Paprec Arkéa. Leg 4 has once again offered up few opportunities for the sailors to get any meaningful sleep so far, and with the top four teams expected to continue to battle closely for the podium positions the prospects for shuteye before the finish remain bleak as this fourth stage comes to a tense conclusion. “So our first night at sea didn’t really go according to plan,” said Team Malizia’s Cole Brauer (USA). “We knew we had taken a risk pretty much as soon as we had left Monaco. We had talked about how we were going to soak low and get on the other side of this low pressure that was moving northeast. “We took the risk by sailing less distance – which made us look really good in the beginning, but when the low passed us the guys who were off to the west of us got the pressure before we did. What a beautiful backdrop today! Leg 4 is underway with the fleet racing from Nice to Genova on the deep blue waters of the Med! At 17:00 sharp, our crew took a good start under sunny skies and very light east-southeasterly winds of around 8 knots. Racing upwind along the beautiful backdrop of the Côte d’Azur. “The Monaco fly-by was a big moment for us, we were super excited about it,” said Boris after passing the gate in fourth place. “Monaco has been a great partner for nearly 10 years and will continue to be in the future, and is also a strong ally for Ocean protection. The Principality is very invested in this cause, not only through the Yacht Club but also the Prince Albert II Foundation. Sailing past Monaco was really iconic and a close call for us! Leg 3 is heating up in every sense. While Biotherm and Team Holcim-PRB have edged slightly ahead, Team Malizia remains locked in a fierce three-boat battle with Allagrande Mapei Racing and Paprec Arkéa. Rough night for our crew onboard Malizia - Seaexplorer who got stuck in a fishing net and in a no wind zone last night. Will explained: "We’re getting close to Gibraltar now, Tarifa is just over there, and Africa is right in front of us. The objective is to keep pushing east, get through the Strait, and then see what the plan is from there, depending on what happens with the boats ahead and the weather. The leaders managed to squeeze through Gibraltar with really nice breeze, so they’re still fast and quite far away. Unfortunately, we’ve lost quite a bit of contact with them. At the same time, Alla Grande made a big comeback from behind with more breeze, so now they’re very close to us. It’s hard to say what will happen next. There are still a lot of changes possible and the maths of it all is tricky. Until we cross the finish line, we just have to make sure we minimise mistakes, keep the boat moving, and see where we end up in the end." As we near the end of Leg 2, the longest of this edition of The Ocean Race Europe, fatigue is beginning to show, and the frustration of the night before the Porto fly-by still lingers in the minds of Malizia’s sailors.
