Our first prototype for the aft solar panels. Temporary legs to the ground but it starts getting us some more winter power. We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. We have a frequently updated blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. Our free Sustainable Sailing book is at: https://sustainablesailing.codeberg.page/ Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). We have had various stages of temporary wiring for all the 240V AC loads on the boat for 6 years. Now I'm doing it more properly. But today (in a typical ADHD way) I kind of got sucked into being more disruptive than planned. It started with emptying the composting toilet, that meant clearing the forecabin and I was able to find some parts I wanted. Then I decided it was a good time to wire in a socket in the forecabin to heat the compost instead of using an extension lead. I did that and realised the route was the same as for the galley and Nook. So I thought I would just do the galley but accidentally cut off the extension lead to the nook, so I had to do both (and the route goes through the cockpit locker which is why that had to be emptied as well), We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. Jane took over the saloon today so that she could tackle insulating the starboard size, normally hidden behind the settee back, which we use as a "storage" dumping ground. This is the first layer of insulation designed to move the condensation point away from the hull. Between the stringers (which are foam surrounded by fibregalsss) we will have 40mm of xps sheet. They will be airtight sealed at the edges so it shouldn't matter that there will be an air gap between the foil backed foam and the fairly rigid xps. The xps will be held in place by 100mm plywood strips screwed to the stringers. There will be a narrow timber strip on the outside so that the screws don't punch through the thin plywood. We are painting the xps and the ply will be painted in a contrasting colour. You can see this in our top 10 interior changes video (set as the related video).
