We're finally starting work on our custom solar arch for the sailboat! In this episode, we build the main structure using welded bends, cut and fit horizontal pipes, and tackle a few unexpected mistakes along the way. We also add dinghy davits and begin reinforcing the arch with smaller support pipes. Then it's time for a test fit on the boat to see how everything lines up-still just tack welded for now, but it's really starting to take shape! In this video, we start building the walls for the doghouse on our sailboat using resin infusion-a process that draws resin into fibers with vacuum pressure. This is the same method we'll later use to create the massive carbon fiber mainsheet beam that will be integrated into the doghouse. In order to prepare for upcoming lamination we do some tests, we test different mold release methods and also do a test piece using resin infusion method - meaning you lay up all fibers dry and push epoxy through the laminate using vacuum. One advantage of this method is that you don't have to stress about pot life of the epoxy. We have started the Doghouse project. Before starting the actual build we have spent quite some time figuring out how to design it. With some drawings in CAD and building a mockup to reach a final design. And, on top of this, we also want to move the main sheet from the cockpit up to the roof of the doghouse which means we need to have a design that not only looks good but is strong enough to handle the loads. One year has passed since we bought our sailboat and started the refit work, so we thought it was time to do a breakdown on our costs so far. Some weeks ago we fixed the leaking raw water pump on the engine, which we hadn't shared yet, so now we thought it was time to do so. We also head out on a last sail of the season, before we start to conserve the boat for winter and start our winter refit projects. One thing we really wanted to do this summer was to do a longer passage including a night sail, so we could further test the boat before we start with further refit jobs. As our first sail was early autumn we had little hope that a good window would show up before autumn and winter arrived for real. But a couple of weekends ago a perfect window appeared and we could head out on a 24-hour sail around Gotlandic Sand Island (Gotska Sandön) and back again!
