We call Unit 2 in the new Harken integrated ILCA kicker/boom vang system “The Twiddle”. It’s the component that lives moving up and down in the middle of the purchase system. Until now, every 12:1 or 15:1 ILCA vang system ever designed has employed a traditional double block right there. Those sheaves manage different loads and spin at very different rates. So every conventional double block tips over, the line becomes unaligned and chafes the sides. The Twiddle is a fiddle block with a designed-in 45 degree twist. The Twiddle stays aligned and erases that chafe. This has not taken very long: sailors in other Classes are grasping the Twiddle’s potential to vanquish friction and improve responsiveness in purchase systems. Good on ‘em! The Twiddle was certainly designed for the ILCA but there is no reason you can’t put one to work in halyard tension or on the cunningham or anywhere else you figure they’ll work better. In this video Harken Engineers and two sailors on the British sailing team discuss the new system. This year, the entirely new Harken ILCA vang system makes its debut. All three components are upgrades from our existing system that remains the ILCA/Laser Class standard after more than 20 years. The upper block is now a 25mm Fly Block with stainless balls and a unique pin shaped and angled to remain in place even under zero tension. The middle double block is in fact a Zircon Fiddle Block with a unique twist (we call it the 'twiddle' in Pewaukee). The lower unit is also distinctive. Every sheave is larger in diameter for more power and wider for less friction, so the unit will better enable today's increased vang loads. -- Visit Harken 👉 https://bit.ly/Harken_
