Sometime between September 21st and 22nd, 1924, the whaleback freighter SS Clifton vanished during a storm on Lake Superior. Not one of the 30 people on board were ever found. While largely forgotten today, the disappearance was one of Lake Huron's most mysterious ghost ships, inspiring stories, legends, and numerous folk songs. On September 14th, 1914, RMS Carmania, recently converted into an armed merchant cruiser made a strange discovery in the South Atlantic-- another armed merchant cruiser disguised to look exactly like her. It was the German SMS Cap Trafalgar, which had also been converted into a war ship and disguised to trick allied ships. The encounter set off one of the strangest naval battles in history. A fight to the death between two luxury liners. The daring raid was one of the most dramatic U-Boat victories of World War II. U-47 and commander Günther Prien were catapulted to fame but their success wouldn't last long. Just over a year later, U-47 and her screw would vanish without a trace. The Queen Elizabeth 2 (fondly known as the QE2) was launched in 1967 was the last Cunard Queen built in the United Kingdom. Despite coming into service at the worst possible time for an ocean liner, The QE2 was a crowd favorite, earning an adoring fanbase that loves her to this day. Her incredible career spanned over four decades. She still survives today as a floating hotel in Dubai. The SS Leviathan, formerly the German SS Vaterland, was launched on April 3rd, 1913 by the Hamburg America Line and was requisitioned by the United States during World War 1. She was the largest American ocean liner yet and promised to help establish the newly founded United States Lines. Unfortunately, despite her popularity, she never lived up to her potential. On December 22nd, 1928, the Danish training ship København sent her last wireless message. The massive, fire-masted barque was a marvel of engineering and shipbuilding, one of the finest ships afloat at the time. After a final, routine message, she vanished without a trace. What happened to the ship and the 59 souls on board remains a mystery to this day. In November 1913, the Great Lakes were hit by the most destructive storm in the region's history. Of the 19 ships lost to the Great Lakes Storm of 1913, often dubbed the White Hurricane, the largest was the brand new Canadian freighter James Carruthers, which vanished on Lake Huron on November 9th, 1913. This is her story. Built on a desolate rock a mile off the Northern Oregon coast, Terrible Tilly endured the worst that the rugged Pacific could throw at it. Through it all, the light remained for 77 years. Now, long abandoned, the derelict lighthouse continues to spark the imagination.
