Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 345 The cyclone is behind us. The wind is in our favour. And for the first time in what feels like forever — we are sailing exactly where we want to go. This episode is the passage. Three days offshore from Vuda Marina in Nadi, 300 miles downwind to the Lau Islands, Fiji's most remote and least visited island group. The conditions are almost unreal — downwind sailing against what are typically the prevailing trade winds, with the tail end of Cyclone Vaianu pushing us exactly where we need to be. Sometimes the ocean just delivers. The fish we caught in the first hours of the last passage? It became a tuna poke bowl, made from scratch on passage and eaten on the top deck in perfect sailing conditions. If you're going to be 300 miles offshore — that's the way to do it. Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 344 Cyclone Vaianu has passed. The lines are off the dock. And after weeks of waiting — we are finally underway. We're leaving Vuda Marina in Nadi and pointing VA east. 300 miles to the Lau Islands, Fiji's most remote island group. We've been trying to get here for weeks. A cyclone had other ideas. But today the wind is blowing the right direction for the first time in a long time — the tail end of the same storm that kept us pinned down — and we are not wasting it. Getting out past the barrier reef is the first test. The seas are sloppy, leftover swell from the cyclone mixing with fresh wind chop — it's not comfortable, but we've got sails up and we're moving. And within the first few miles of open ocean, the fishing rod goes off. Fresh tuna. Day one. We'll take it. This episode is the departure — the relief, the rough first hours, and the start of what we hope is one of the most remote and rewarding sails of our seven years out here. Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 343 We were in Vuda Marina, Fiji, wrapping up boat projects and preparing to sail to the Lau island group when we got the news: a cyclone had formed nearby. Within 48 hours, we went from resupply mode to cyclone preparation mode. We secured the boat, reinforced dock lines, prepared for heavy wind and rain, and made the call to ride it out tied to the dock at Port Denarau Marina instead of at anchor. This is our first cyclone. And this episode shows the whole experience—the preparation, the intensity of the storm, the waiting, and the aftermath. About the Storm: The cyclone formed near Fiji with little warning. Wind speeds ramped up quickly, bringing heavy rain and sustained gusts. Being in the marina meant we had the support of professional staff, reinforced dock systems, and the ability to monitor conditions closely. The footage shows how intense the storm was. But honestly? We felt it way differently than we would have if we were out at anchor. And that's because of the Vuda Marina staff. They worked tirelessly during the storm—checking on every boat, adjusting lines, helping secure vessels, and staying proactive throughout. EPISODE 342 After nearly a month exploring the remote Yasawa Islands—anchored in secluded spots, living off-grid, limited access to supplies—we're pulling into Port Denarau Marina on Fiji's main island, Viti Levu. This is our first fuel stop in nine months, our first real resupply run, and our first chance to tackle the boat project list with access to a well-stocked yacht chandlery, restaurants, laundry facilities, and all the amenities we've been without. This isn't a "how-to" on efficient sailing—it's a glimpse into what marina life looks like after extended remote cruising. We're running low on provisions, we've explored the majority of the island group here, and it's time to sail back to Viti Levu—Fiji's main island—to resupply and prepare for what's next. Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 337 Seven years. Over 30,000 nautical miles. We've sailed to some incredible places, and Fiji is definitely one of them. Our days have a rhythm: sail, anchor, explore, maintain the boat, edit. The flow is pretty much the same. But somehow, every single day out here is different. This week started peacefully—sailing north through Fiji's Yasawa Islands, fishing, watching thousands of flying foxes fill the sky at sunset. Then the weather turned. A cyclone had formed about 300 kilometers south of Fiji's main island, Viti Levu. We weren't in its direct path, but we were experiencing the outer bands—heavy rain and wind feeding the storm south of us. The forecast had been tracking it for days, and we positioned ourselves in a protected bay, anchored for the predicted wind direction. Except we got it wrong. The wind wasn't coming from the North like predicted—it was hitting us from the west. And that put us dangerously close to shore with not enough room if our anchor dragged. For hours, the wind kept building instead of calming. The longer we stayed, the more uncomfortable we felt. We had to make the call: pull anchor and reposition in the middle of heavy weather. This episode shows both sides of cruising during cyclone season—the peaceful rhythm and the intense moments when the forecast doesn't cooperate and you have to adapt fast. This is why we're one of the few boats still out here right now. You have to be prepared, stay alert, and trust your instincts even when the models say something different. After seven years of this life, we've learned to expect the unexpected. The rhythm stays the same, but the days never do. ⚠️ CYCLONE SEASON SAILING: We're sailing Fiji during cyclone season (November-April) when most cruisers have left. We stay vigilant, watch forecasts closely, position ourselves in protected bays, and are always ready to move if conditions change. Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 336 Last week, we dove with black tip reef sharks - curious, peaceful, harmless. This week? Bull sharks. One of the most aggressive and dangerous shark species on the planet. We sailed to a new island in Fiji specifically for this: to dive with bull sharks for the first time. They're territorial, unpredictable, and capable of thriving in both saltwater and freshwater, which makes them one of the few sharks that venture into rivers and shallow coastal areas where humans are. They're in the top three for unprovoked attacks on humans. And today, we're getting in the water with them. This isn't something we're doing casually. We're diving with Kuata Barefoot Resort, one of the only places in Fiji where you can experience bull sharks in a controlled, professional environment. The dive masters know these sharks individually—they've named them, studied their behavior, and created a safe way for people to witness these apex predators up close. But here's the thing: this operation feeds the sharks. And when we found out, we had mixed feelings. Feeding changes their behavior, conditions them to associate humans with food. It's not how we prefer to see wild animals. But this team does it with extreme caution, respect, and years of experience. And honestly? The experience was unforgettable. Getting in the water, my nerves were through the roof. But once we were positioned and watching these powerful animals move through their environment, a calm washed over me. They're beautiful, commanding, effortless. You feel the respect immediately—you're in their world. We survived. Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 335 Here's something most people don't realize about sailing: we spend about 80 to 90 percent of our time at anchor, not actually sailing. And honestly? Those are some of the best days. This is what a week at anchor in Fiji looks like for us: wing foiling, diving with black tip reef sharks, scuba diving incredible reefs, boat maintenance, and floating in the water with sundowners watching the sunset. This episode is all about finding that balance between staying active, exploring underwater, getting work done on the boat, and taking time to just be. This is the rhythm of cruising life. This is why we're out here. We spend time wing foiling in the anchorage, something I'm finally feeling confident doing again after my achilles recovery. We encounter black tip reef sharks cruising around the boat—elegant, sleek, beautiful animals that we never get tired of watching. They're curious, just like us. Not aggressive, but still wild. Still sharks. You respect them, watch them, appreciate them. The underwater footage from our scuba dive is some of the best we've captured in Fiji. Clear visibility, vibrant coral, abundant marine life. We get playful down there, explore, and just enjoy the freedom of being able to drop everything mid-day and spend an hour weightless on the reef. There's also boat work, because there's always boat work. I tackle a small project using Warren's tools, he does some engine maintenance, and we wrap up the day floating off the back of the boat with drinks in hand. This is the real cruising life that most people don't see. Not the passages or the big sailing days, but the weeks at anchor where we find our rhythm and remember exactly why we're doing this. Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 334 We're back from Australia, the cook hook is installed, and we're heading deeper into Fiji's outer islands. But this episode isn't about big projects or dramatic sailing. It's about the everyday life aboard our sailboat that we don't always show. Living on a boat full time means doing all the same things you do at home: laundry, meal prep, cleaning, maintenance. Just a little differently. When you're planning to be in remote anchorages for weeks without access to a grocery store, food preservation becomes essential. Bananas and pineapples get cut up and frozen. Fresh produce gets organized and prioritized. We have a washing machine on the boat (yes, really). Laundry day looks pretty similar to life on land, just with more salt air and sunshine. Instead of mowing the lawn, I polish stainless steel to combat the constant salt spray. Instead of running to the hardware store, Warren works through his ongoing maintenance list: checking systems, keeping everything running smoothly. We're the same as everyone else, really. We just happen to be doing it on a sailboat in the middle of the Pacific during cyclone season. And that means being strategic about where we anchor, balancing the desire to explore remote islands with the need for protected anchorages if the weather turns. This is what a normal week looks like for us. The routines, the chores, the systems that keep our floating home comfortable and functional when we're miles from civilization. Not every week is flying to Australia to build boat parts. Most weeks are just... this. A $2,000 boat part. Weeks of waiting. Shipping to Fiji. Or... fly to Australia and build it ourselves. Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. Last episode, we left you hanging. Warren's nav panel project hit a snag—one component failed, and we had to wait weeks for a replacement part. Well, it finally arrived, and today Warren's finishing what he started. But that's not the only thing happening in this episode. We're exploring our first Fijian village, meeting locals, and learning about life beyond the resorts and tourist spots. We do a quick Sevusevu ceremony—presenting kava to the village as a sign of respect—which grants us permission to anchor and explore freely. We also bushwhack our way up a hill for an incredible view... until Warren has a complete meltdown over a spider. And just when we think we're settled for the day, the anchorage conditions shift. The winds pick up, and we're forced to move around to the other side of the island for better protection. What could've been frustrating turns into one of the most beautiful afternoon sails we've had in Fiji—stunning scenery, perfect wind, and a reminder that sometimes the unexpected moments are the best ones. Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. In this episode, Warren tackles one of the biggest upgrades we've done on the boat, rewiring our entire nav panel, the brain of our electrical system. But living on a boat means your home is also your workshop. The salon becomes a wiring station, tools take over every surface, and there's no escape from the chaos until the job is done. Despite the temporary mess I have to live in, the guy does really amazing work. He's a jack of all trades, and honestly? I'm lucky to have him constantly making our home better and better. His skills are top notch. It's just the name of the game living on a boat—your home is the workshop until the job's done. And then... one component didn't work. Three weeks later, we're still waiting for the replacement part. So while we waited, we did what we do best...explored! Dingy adventures with black tip reef sharks, climbing trees for coconuts, unauthorized beaches (oops), and beach bonfires with friends. Because sitting around staring at a broken panel? Not really our style. This is boat life. Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. There's something about these Fijian islands and survival. Survivor was filmed here. Castaway was filmed here. So when we discovered Tom Hanks' Castaway island was just a few miles away, we had to see it for ourselves—and honestly? Imagine if we could actually survive out here. In this episode, we anchor in a downpour (of course, right as we're dropping the hook), Warren finally gets our dive compressor working, and we go on our first scuba dive since being back on the boat. Seven years ago, before we even bought this boat, getting our dive certifications was the first thing we did—so we could do exactly this. Then we set off to explore the island where they filmed Castaway with Tom Hanks. We walk the beaches, hike to the summit, and talk about whether we could actually do it if we had to. Spoiler: we're really glad we have the boat. These Fijian islands remind us so much of the Marquesas—our first landfall when we sailed across the South Pacific four years ago. Same dramatic volcanic landscapes and raw beauty, but with incredible coral reefs and pristine sand beaches. Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. Fiji has over 330 islands scattered across 750,000 square miles of the South Pacific—about half the size of the continental United States, but the actual land? Just over 7,000 square miles. The rest is all water, so having a boat is a plus in these parts. We won't see them all, but we're damn well going to try. In this episode, we start our journey island-hopping through Fiji with our friends on a motor trawler, navigate narrow passes, discover vibrant reefs teeming with life, and find our own private island (okay, it's a sandbar... but it's ours for a few hours). From Yellow Banded Sweetlips to Pacific Regal Blue Tangs, the underwater world here is like watching a movie in real life.
