Karen’s grinding on a winch, or at least trying to as it is stiff and hard. Our 32ST-58 Meissner winch on the port side of the boat is way too stiff. Steve starts to remove the pieces so that it can be properly cleaned and runs into a bit of a sticky situation. One of the pins holding in a bolt refuses to budge bringing the action to a full stop. For now, we’ll just keep soaking it with PB Blaster in an attempt to work it loose. That project will be continued later... You all know we love dancing! This time we shake a leg not only on Isabella’s bow but also go night clubbing and dance the night away. One thing not so fun are embarrassing moments. We share a couple with y’all during the comments portion of the video. Eeek, a leak in the crew cabin. Using the crew cabin as a garage to store various items and spare parts, we discover the ceiling has been warped due to a leak. To determine the source, Steve cuts a hole in the ceiling and finds that a cable clam on deck is the culprit. Find out how we fix it by watching that segment of DIY. To complete the front reverse cycle improvement from our last episode, we install, bypassing the small Groco strainer, a hose from the thru hull to a cut off valve in the new accessible area and then to the large Groco strainer. When cleaning the strainer, we have to shut off the water from the thru hull which is located under our bedding and some support boards in our main cabin. Now with the new valve, we can do it all from the see through panel; soooo much easier. Sending love and appreciation to our subscribers; we couldn’t do this without you. Karen is jumping rope again much to Steve's delight. We decided to dance to some Blues and discussed other reasons to live or not to live on a sailboat. We addressed a few viewer comments. Thank you so much subscribers! ❤️ If you haven't already please hit the subscribe button. Isabella has two reverse cycle units that provide us with air conditioning in the summer and heat in the winter. Water flows through from the outside into a strainer which is pumped into the unit and then discharged back to the environment. Summer heat has arrived bringing hot weather and warm seas. It means it’s growing season and lots of stuff collects in the reverse cycle units’ strainers causing the water flow to the unit to decrease. Cleaning the strainer of our front air conditioner is a bit of a hassle since it is located under the bed in the main cabin. Ahhh, another DIY project...let's make it easier to clean the strainer by moving from under the cabin bed. We opened up an access door so the Groco strainer could be reached for cleaning without moving the bedding, cushions, and support boards. Steve drilled a pilot hole first so that the jigsaw could be used to cut through the wainscoting wall under the bed. We've left Isabella and are becoming dirt dwellers, swallowed the anchor, and moved to the hard. Well...not really. You know living on Isabella is a joy for us and we have left her only temporarily for a visit with family and friends in Southern California. Join us to learn about our preparations to secure our boat before going ashore. Isabella is secured to the dock with 3/4 inch dock lines at her stern, bow and spring lines which come out from midship to cleats on the dock. When we leave, all those are checked and often doubled up for extra support. She weighs 50,000 pounds so in a big blow Isabella can really tug on the dock cleats and we don't want her cruising away without us. Beyond that, plants have to be moved around, some thru hulls will be closed and the water pump will be turned off. We definitely don't want to come back to a flooded home. Making sure the reverse cycle air conditioners' strainers are clean and which unit to leave on. Why would you live on a sailboat? Watch this episode of Sailing Intermission and find out the top 10 reasons Karen and Steve live on Isabella. We’ve been doing this for about six years now and we’re still enjoying the heck out of sailboat life. Looking out at the water from the cockpit is one of the many pleasures of boat life. Making sure that’s a crystal clear view, Karen cleans the Strataglass. She carefully removed any dirt with a wet cloth and then applied some IMAR protective cleaner. The effect is dazzling. As Karen does yoga Steve feels the impulse to recite poetry. After a few stretching exercises, she does some jumping jacks and windmills. It’s always more fun to exercise on the deck than at the gym; although, sometimes it can be more of a challenge as the boats moves in the water. We highlight a few of the comments and questions from our subscribers and viewers. This time, one has stumped us and we don’t have an answer. We're still doing some painting. Boring! It does look nice when finished though. Karen's painter outfit makes Steve's putter flutter. Some great friends stopped by to visit on their way north. Always a fun time. They sail and anchor a lot while enjoying great views and very scenic locations. We looked at some of our Garmin 1242xsv chart plotter features. More to come on that. Our new Garmin GC100 bow camera works well but because it is wifi instead of hard wired sometimes the it blinks out for a few seconds. We talked about our tumblehome hull shape. Some describe it as very sexy and may possess a few advantages when sailing. Watch out when docking though as it sticks out and is prone to getting a scratch here and there. We also addressed some nautical terms with provocative & intimate undertones. Hey, of course we danced! Huge hugs and kisses to our subscribers and viewers. We love your comments and questions. DIY easy docking, dolphins, dancing, generator woes, and tall ship It’s a real stretch to reach dock lines when coming into our slip. Solution...build an extension to the dock steps for easier line retrieval. We attached a piece of 2 X 4 to the step handle that can swivel out over the edge of the dock. Before going out, a dock line is hung over the extension. It is so much easier to hook that line; if only catching a fish was as easy. Our day sail had to be cut short. Just as we were about to raise the sail a noise from the engine room caught our attention. Some of the screws on the engine shroud were rattling and coming loose. That was not acceptable, no sailing and back to dock we had to go. Not all was lost as there were several dolphins nearby swimming and gliding effortlessly in the water. Gotta love those dolphins! During a land trip we were lucky to catch a USCG tall ship, the Barque Eagle. She was in dock and available for a quick tour. The vessel appears to be steel hulled, is 295 feet in length and was built in 1936. The US Coast Guard uses her for training and she carries a crew of about 50 when out at sea. It’s always a thrill to be able to go onboard such a huge boat. After much diagnosing and replacing parts, our generator still fails to run without the glow plug being constantly energized on startup. So...it’s time to call in a professional for assistance. We will keep you posted as to how that goes in an upcoming episode. Still having fun living on Isabella. Karen dances all over the deck and both she and Steve do a bit of Tai Chi. Boat life is different, sometimes challenging, sometimes peaceful and always changing. Huge hugs and kisses to our subscribers and viewers. We address a some of your comments and questions. Goofy jokes, more painting, a secret, broken generator, dancing, several comments Previously took Isabella out for a spin and turned her around at the dock so we could easily work on the starboard side. Our green "racing" stripe needed some help. We taped plastic between the boat and dock to catch any sanding dust generated. Using the belt sander it was soon ready to paint. Blue taping took almost as long as sanding. Once prepared a coat of Petit one part polyurethane in green was applied. The weather looked great but soon changed as rain delayed the second coat. Pardon our goofy jokes in between. Still working on the Northern Lights generator. It starts but you have to keep the glow plugs energized for it to continue running, otherwise it dies. Previously replaced all of the relays to no avail. Started bleeding the fuel lines to make sure there is no air in them. Didn't work. Ordered a new oil pressure switch hoping it is the decisive fix. Trial and error. Might eventually have to hire a professional to diagnose it. Addressed several comments from various episodes and, of course danced. It’s a hull of a job, but it’s time to turn Isabella around so we can work on her starboard side. A few episodes ago, Steve polished and painted her green stripe on the port side of her hull. Now, we’ll work on the other side. Taking her out for a short spin Karen dawns her red bikini while Steve waxes poetic and does a cockpit dance. We pass by some new docks at a marina and enjoy some time out on the water. Docking is always like a controlled crash. Steve steers the boat while Karen catches the lines. On Isabella, it’s easiest to secure the stern line first since the bow thruster makes the bow a lot easier to handle. Ohhh, if we only had a stern thruster, too. Our existing bow camera quit working. Installed a Garmin GC100 in its place. So far so good with the camera performance. Installing a Garmin update seems to have corrected some of the complaints about it dropping the video frequently. Returning from our California trip we had a DIY project waiting for us. The Dometic reverse cycle air conditioner unit that was ordered came in early while we were away and was ready for pick up. Getting it from dock to deck to cockpit and finally salon was no easy feat. It is always nerve racking moving something that heavy with the chance of it falling into the drink! Steve had built a plank and it proved very helpful in making the transition easier. There were a few tweaks before the installation of the Dometic. With the previous unit there was an imbalance of airflow. Too much in the main cabin and too little in the salon. Steve custom made a baffle to place in the duct work that would divert more of the airflow into the salon and away from the cabin area. Additionally, the drip pan drain was a little too high to allow complete drainage from condensation. A couple of pieces of wood were secured to the floor of the installation area which would allow the unit to be tilted slightly to provide proper drainage. Finally, the unit was in place and cool air filled the cabin and salon. It’ll make for a comfortable summer. Lots of biting no-see-um bugs are about and can make outside activities unbearable. It was a thrill to see tree swallows darting all about knowing they were catching as many of those bugs as fast as they could. Eat up little guys! It's been a while since we polished our spare propeller and it has been sitting on the aft deck glistening in the sun ever since. Karen went in the aft sail locker preparing to help guide the propeller into place. The area was too tight and she had to come out so Steve could lower it down. Oops, now it looks like we might need to paint that locker. It is so nice to be back home on board Isabella. We truly appreciate all the support from our subscribers and viewers. Have been bleeding the fuel lines and replacing relays to no avail. More to come. Painted behind the salon cushions. It looks much better but a bit stinky as it is outgassing. The paint really takes several days to cure so what better time to travel. California here we come. Steve wanted to join the Mile High Club on the airplane. Karen kept up appearances by saying no. Spring is here and thus so is spring cleaning. Isabella is covered in pollen causing Karen to begin to clean the boat. Steve, assisting with the hose and the prankster, squirts her while she’s scrubbing the deck. April showers bring May flowers, but that water was cold. As a gesture, Steve finished the boat cleaning. We raise the mizzen sail in dock. Using the trusty WinchRite makes it so much easier; every winch becomes an electric winch. A little dirty and still looking good plus when lowered into the MacPac (sail cover) the sail flaked (folded and stored) perfectly. Isabella has several separate bilge areas, one of which is located in the main cabin area and is hard to reach. Using the Ryobi jigsaw and a scroll blade Steve cut a hole in the floor to install a new access panel. It made reaching that bilge a lot easier. Since the panel is installed under a piece of carpet it isn’t even visible. The weather was wonderful this week and we spent some time on deck enjoying the warm spring breezes. Karen waited in vain for pelicans to fly by, maybe next time. We are so happy that the extended forecast shows mild days because, bad news, our Dometic reverse cycle unit isn’t worth repairing. The report from the authorized service dealer indicates the unit's reversing valve is stuck, the control panel needs to be replaced, the compressor is not predicted to last long, etc., etc., etc. Thus, a new unit will be ordered and it will take several days for it to arrive. We decided to buy the same Dometic 16,000 BTU unit due to the size constraints of the area where it will reside. Y’all you know we love to dance. This time we tried some synchronized steps. It’s a little difficult balancing on a boat so some dance moves are a little shakier than others. And yes, we need a bit more practice. Thank you so very much for joining us here. Oh no, it won’t switch. The weather is getting warmer and it is time to adjust the Dometic reverse cycle unit from heat to air conditioning, except it was stuck in heat mode. The unit is under all the bedding and cushions in the front cabin, not so easy to access. Once the defective unit was available, Steve checked the solenoid valve which allows the reversing valve to move. It appeared to be working. Next he tried to manually switch the reversing valve from heat to cool. It was a no go, so the heavy unit had to be pulled. Once on deck, we carefully slid the unit across a board to the dock and into a wagon. Loaded it in the car and drove it to a factory authorized Dometic dealer. Now, we wait...will the repair cost be worth saving the unit or will we have to buy a new one? Hopefully the decision will be made and we will have a unit installed before the weather gets warmer and we get hot and sweaty. Karen did some detail painting in the front sail locker using Interlux BilgeKote paint and Steve installed two poles for hanging our extra lines. That locker is now in ship shape condition and nicely organized. It’s great to have that DIY project completed. The area where the Dometic had lived looked a little dingy. While the bilge paint’s out it became the next project. Steve cleaned and sanded the bottom of the area. Karen came behind and painted. That space looks so much better now and it will look fantastic once there is a reverse cycle unit housed in there again. Isabella’s fenders are a variety of types. We decided to match them by removing a round fender and buying a cylindrical one that matched most of the others. Now the remaining fenders needed some sprucing up. On a warm and windy day, Karen used a magic sponge to clean the existing fenders so their white color would sparkle like new. At last, matching fenders to protect Isabella’s hull. We hope you enjoy the glimpses into our boat life we share through Sailing Intermission’s videos. Our subscribers and viewers really keep us going and we love hearing from them. Bikinis, pelicans, sail locker, amplifier, stereo and more.... Karen tries on mix matched bikinis outfits in anticipation of warmer weather coming soon. Steve enjoys viewing the combination of bikini outfits and bare skin. We were lucky enough to see a bird feeding frenzy show brought about by several pelicans. It was wonderful to see so many and so close. A dolphin even managed to slip through their feeding ground. Steve finished the installation of the second amplifier in the salon. The video may not do the sound changes justice. On board you can hear the change in fullness of the tunes being played through the Fusion stereo and Kicker box speakers in the salon. After pulling everything out of the front sail locker, we sand and prepare the area for painting with bilge paint. It’s a little tricky painting the locker floor so we connected a brush to a pole. It worked well and once the bottom was painted and dried, Karen was able to get in the locker and almost finish painting the sides. Exercise, sewing, squirting, amplifier, bimini tent Jump on aboard and join us at Sailing Intermission. Karen is feeling better and back in the swing of things with jumping jacks, weights and dancing. She squirts the bimini as she and Steve get Isabella all wet and clean. We venture into the marina’s parking lot with a large piece of used sunbrella. Why? It’s an old deck cover that we’re going to cut down to a smaller size to make a tent that will protect the bimini and partially shade the deck and salon area below. Steve whips out the trusty 237 Singer Sewing machine circa 1957. That baby just sews through pretty much everything; especially after being tuned by a local sewing center. After several feet of stitches, a needle battle wound and some well placed grommets, we’ve got our bimini tent and are ready for the spring and summer sun load. Ya’ll know how we love dancing and music. The Kicker speakers in the salon sound good and yet there are times they don’t inspire us to cut a rug. Steve begins the process of fishing wires to install an additional amplifier. That DIY project is to be continued. We can’t wait to hear boosted tunes down below soon. Bikini stretching, batteries, windlass charger, illness, generator starter, pork chops Join us this time for bikini stretches, batteries, a generator fix and pork chops. We’ve been down with an energy zapping virus and are finally on the mend. Even dancing was hard to manage. Karen couldn’t stand being cooped up down below and had to get out on top for some fresh air and stretches wearing a bikini. Maintenance checks on batteries lead to replacing the group 27 engine starter battery, dated 7/20, and the Windlass battery, dated 9/19. The windlass battery was upgraded from a regular group 27 lead acid to a group 31 AGM. Both were still functioning though too old for us. Group 27 batteries are a bit heavy yet Steve was able to muscle them off the boat with little trouble. Then, uh-oh, the charger to the Windlass battery wasn’t working. Yep, another replacement project. New charger, Noco Genius 10amp, is now successfully mounted and working flawlessly. Since we were checking out some of Isabella’s systems, why not start up the generator? Always a good idea to do routine start ups. Well...except this time, the generator didn’t start! It sounded like a starter issue and luckily we had one on board. After blasting and soaking a tight bolt with PB Blaster, Steve took out the old and put in a new starter. We ended the week with some delicious pork chops, brined with sea salt and rubbed with oregano, onion and garlic powders, pepper and paprika. With an added side of coleslaw it was an excellent meal. Strange red head, beach, dolphins, sunbathing, medicine chest, water pump, abandoned boats You never know what you’ll see on Sailing Intermission. Steve and Karen, at different times, both get a visit from a mysterious red headed woman. She says her name is Scarlet. Who is she???? The weather is getting warmer and we venture out to the beach. The wind picks up and Karen ends up chasing and grabbing a bouncing beach ball several times. We decided to cut the beach fun short and go home. Less wind and Karen finds some time to sunbathe on deck while several dolphins happen to swim by Isabella. They are so graceful and beautiful to watch. The water pump has been coming on intermittently without water coming through any faucets. Thinking there was a leak, we have been searching all over, under sink cabinets, in the showers, etc to locate where the leak is occurring. This week the water pump stopped working. Steve replaced it with a new 5 gallon per minute Jabsco fresh water pump. Thank goodness there was a spare on board. And an amazing bonus! It fixed the problem of the unexplained intermittent pump action. Apparently, the old water pump had a broken sensor which caused it to come on without any water faucet being active. Yea, new pump, no leak, happy couple. The medicine chest in the forward shower was looking a bit rough. Steve sanded and applied several coats of polyurethane to the wood facing. Now it looks brand new. Walking around the marina we noticed several boats in various stages of disrepair. We’ve mentioned this before and it still puzzles us as to why people let their boats sit, sometimes for years, without ever using or even visiting them. It’s sad and costly as marina slips are a monthly expense. Thank you for being with us on our journey. Subscribers, you all are awesome and we so appreciate your support. Dancing, Partying, Skirts, Sextant, Walk, Comment & Questions Spring is coming and we bounce into action by partying at some local lounges, dancing together and with others. OK., maybe a little too much partying! Karen and Steve clear their heads the next morning by taking a nice long walk and breathing in some fresh air. On the way, they encounter an unusual plant that seems to keep a party beat on its own. Redundancy is a key player to safety on a sailboat. For navigation, some of our tools include the Garmin Chartplotter with GPS, Ritchie compass and now, Steve is developing another navigation skill. 🎶 **Sailing Intermission – Dancing, Exhaust, and a Bomb Cyclone?!** 🌊 This episode kicks off with Karen dancing to some surf music before we dive into boat projects and everyday life aboard. We finally get our riser prepped for reinstallation—this time for good and leak-free! That meant cutting away some fiberglass insulation to expose the 2.5" metal tubing so the exhaust elbow could be properly welded. To finish it off, we wrapped the newly welded section with exhaust insulation to keep things cool where they should be. Steve uses nail polish to mark the alignment points for the welder… then promptly puts those skills to *another* use by giving Karen a matching pedicure. He gets a little distracted by the dress she’s wearing but somehow manages to paint her toenails without incident. 😄 With a bomb cyclone headed toward Georgia and freezing temps on the way, we fill our 280-gallon water tank before the marina shuts off the water. That should keep us going for about 10 days. We also take time to answer viewer comments and celebrate a huge milestone—our **200th episode**—with some well-deserved Key Lime pie. 🥧 And yes… we’re still asking ourselves why we moved from the warm Florida Keys to *Georgia*. 😂 Thanks for watching and celebrating this milestone with us! 👉 Like, subscribe, and drop a comment—we love hearing from you!
