🎶 **Sailing Intermission – Dancing, Exhaust, and a Bomb Cyclone?!** 🌊 This episode kicks off with Karen dancing to some surf music before we dive into boat projects and everyday life aboard. We finally get our riser prepped for reinstallation—this time for good and leak-free! That meant cutting away some fiberglass insulation to expose the 2.5" metal tubing so the exhaust elbow could be properly welded. To finish it off, we wrapped the newly welded section with exhaust insulation to keep things cool where they should be. Steve uses nail polish to mark the alignment points for the welder… then promptly puts those skills to *another* use by giving Karen a matching pedicure. He gets a little distracted by the dress she’s wearing but somehow manages to paint her toenails without incident. 😄 With a bomb cyclone headed toward Georgia and freezing temps on the way, we fill our 280-gallon water tank before the marina shuts off the water. That should keep us going for about 10 days. A trip taken in vain. We went to Dallas for a special event except while in flight the event was canceled. Landed and immediately rearranged our return flight for the next day. At least we had time to drive by a few of our old dancing clubs in Deep Ellum and enjoy some great jambalaya at the Free Man Cajun Cafe & Lounge. Brought back some great memories. Our first episode, Refitting a Catalina 42 sailboat, dancing and messing around Ep 1, was videoed at a few of those clubs. Steve’s been soaking the bolts on Isabella’s engine riser’s flange for several weeks. He was able to remove them and take off the flange. Next step, remove the protective insulation on the riser to expose the metal portion and have a welder weld the flange onto the riser. We’re making progress on fixing the exhaust leak, yea! More to come on that...but that’s another episode. It had been a while since the Vitrifrigo refrigerator had been defrosted, so that was next on our to do list. The ice had built up quite a bit and it was definitely time to melt that away. Once defrosted, it was time to celebrate aka dance time. Exercise, jump rope, jumping jacks, life jackets, Magma grill, dancing, comments. Hello subscribers and viewers. We’re so glad you have visited us here on Sailing Intermission. Your interactions through viewing, commenting and asking questions truly keep us afloat. Love those comments and some are featured in this episode. Some are funny, others informative and several are creative and poetic. Steve is in the dark as to which ones Karen has selected which makes it extra fun. Safety is always paramount on Isabella. Our inflatable life jackets are of an unknown age. They typically last five to eight years; time to test and replace. We inflate one of the inflatables while we went ahead and bought two new jackets. What can we say...they were having a great sale at West Marine and just couldn’t resist. They are Coast Guard approved, 35 pound buoyancy with a harness and were half priced. There is some exercise going on. We bought the new inflatable life jackets and tested an older one. Always nice to exercise safety practices and Karen does a small workout. Keeping things hot! The burner for our Magma grill finally became available after being out of stock. The old one rusted out and actually broke in half! Steve replaces the burner and we celebrate by having a gourmet meal of high quality hot dogs. Yummy. Having the Magma back in action is such a thrill we had to grill again, this time with some delicious rib eye steaks. Precooked a bit below and then grilled to perfection on deck. A new rod, rerouting the reverse cycle’s water intake, new water pump, drawers for our cabin, the riser saga continues, celebrating the new year, 2025 memories, comments and questions Steve rerouted the hose for the water intake flow of the reverse cycle air conditioner unit in our cabin and then...there was a horrible noise. Oh no, the water pump died! Luckily we had a spare 500 gallon an hour March pump on board. Whew! You can never have enough spare parts on a boat. With the new pump installed the reverse cycle is now keeping us warm and toasty. The Penn Senator reel that came with Isabella has a new friend. It’s a two piece Power Plus Trophy Class rod. Although the Senator could use a heavier rod, we’re going with the two piece because it’s much easier to store. Keep your fingers crossed, Steve just might catch us dinner one day. Storage is always an issue on boats and Isabella is no exception. The owners’ cabin has some storage space but needs more. So we ordered some drawers to address the matter. Steve put the unit together in no time and Karen’s so excited about having more storage we ordered another set of drawers. Boat life just keeps getting better. The saga of the engine riser continues. Steve is discovering more and more information on the subject including getting a $4,000 estimate to build a new riser. He’s still investigating better and less expensive options. We are determined to not have an exhaust leak in the engine room or anywhere else on Isabella without breaking the bank. This time Karen joins Steve in the engine room to loosen a few screws and Steve uses his muscle power to remove the riser. Still not sure how to reconnect the riser to the flange to seal the leak. Greek Food, dancing, propeller, exhaust, huge crane, exercise, Karen in the engine room, retsina, saganaki, dolmas, Orion, dophins Thanks to suggestions from our wonderful viewers, we got a little more aggressive with polishing the propeller. It turns out it is bronze and now it looks really nice. There is a slight exhaust leak between the Cummins 4BT-3.9m engine flange where it connects to the riser that serves as the exit for exhaust. Steve has contacted both a mechanic who came to the boat and an exhaust professional via email. We’ve gotten two different strategies for properly sealing the flange to prevent further leakage. The situation still needs a bit more research on how to proceed before we decide exactly how to solve the issue, so stay tuned for an update in a later episode. We’re still working on some Greek dance moves and tried dancing on the dock instead of on deck. It’s a little easier, but the dock is floating so it also moves. Keeping with the Greek theme we had a wonderful meal with many traditional Greek foods. Fried saganaki cheese, dolmades (we just call them dolmas), hummus with pita bread and an olive feta cheese medley adorned our table. Some Retsina wine completed the menu. Perhaps that meal will improve our dancing???? It was interesting watching some construction on a new marina. Big cranes and dock sections. Speaking of traditions, we know all over the world there are different cultural traditions as the holiday season is upon us. A fish tale, Greek dancing, lights, exercise, propeller, comments and more. Come on aboard and join us! This time on Sailing Intermission, our aft reverse cycle unit stopped producing warm air. No fun as the temperatures are beginning to drop. Low and behold, for the aft unit, it was a fish that had been sucked up into the hose feeding the strainer preventing needed water flow. How big of a fish? Check it out in the video around the 7:00 mark. Now, we’re nice and toasty. Steve finished the rear sail locker stairs that he started making in the previous video. They made it so much easier getting into and out of that sail locker. Even Karen can pop out of the locker easily. We address some of y’all’s comments/questions from previous episodes. Friends, Screwing Around, Propeller, Double Wall, Reverse Cycle Air Conditioner and More Hello everyone and big hugs and kisses to our subscribers. Many of you have been with us for a very long time and all of you help to keep our boat afloat. Viewers, we’re so thrilled you watched our latest video and would love for you to join us by hitting that subscribe button so our channel can continue to grow. The salon has a recessed area where Isabella’s electrical panels and other instruments are located. There is a removeable African Mahogany wall that did not completely seal off from the engine room. Steve built a birch wall to seal off that area and then reinstalled the original wall. The double wall protects that area from any heat and smell that comes from the engine room. We were lucky enough to have our friends visit for a couple of days as they had cruised down from the north. It was party time, catching up while enjoying good food and spirits and exploring some sights. Messing around with them was fun! Our aft rear reverse cycle air conditioner broke and the unit is no longer putting out warm air. Burrrrrr. To get to the unit, we had to remove everything that was in the aft sail locker. At the bottom of the locker was Isabella’s old propeller. Karen is going to clean it up; another project…It’s quite a deep locker making access difficult. Steve started to build a step to be installed which will make getting in and out of the sail locker easier. Plant update: basil is doing great, dill...not so much. Karen still has hopes that it will continue to grow. 🤞Trying to expand our indoor herb garden, we have now planted scallions. Lights, Medicine Chest, Jump roping, Savannah, Propane, Dancing We travel up to Savannah to enjoy the holiday sights. The River walk and squares are becoming decorated for the upcoming holiday season. Even the Georgia Queen is donned in garlands and red bows as she makes her way up the river. The medicine chest floor in the owner’s cabin over the years had begun to sag. Using a small hydraulic jack Steve was able to boost it up so it is once again straight. He also added some additional wood and a fake wall which hides the wires running through the cabinet. It really dressed it up and Karen is excited about using it again. Putting up holiday lights all around Isabella’s deck and eating a festive turkey dinner is how we’re getting the season off to a jolly start. Of course following that yummy dinner, going to the gym and jump roping was the next activity. In the last episode you all saw us remove one of the horizontal 20 pound propane tanks that was on board. It had a bit too much rust. This time it was replaced with a new 11 pound propane tank which sits upright next to the remaining 20 pound tank in the port side lazarette. Yoga, Propane Tanks, Kama Sutra, Laundry, Geodes, Gretsch Guitars, Holiday Reflections and a Q & A session Huge geodes and The Great Gretsch Sound exhibit are some of the things we saw on our day trip. Continuing to relax a bit from DIY projects, we do some routine maintenance chores. Bringing up some lingerie to hang in the cockpit, Karen finishes up the laundry. Steve checks out the propane tanks on board. There are two 20 pound propane tanks on Isabella. One of the tanks has a bit too much rust and will be replaced while the other looks great. Karen takes advantage of the nice weather and does a bit of yoga on the stern. With the holiday season upon us, we reflect on holiday traditions in the past and what the upcoming celebrations look like now. They're a different than when we were living in a house yet still enjoyable. Plus our children will visit soon, party time for sure! We’re going mad!!!! Squeak, squeak, squeak our sub-floor is squeaking and driving us crazy. When it was replaced five years ago apparently we didn’t install enough furring strips. That’s what we are doing in this episode along with replacing the vinyl click lock flooring that lays on top with carpet. Steve made the correct cuts the first time. He really knows how to cut a rug and Karen loves to get down on a nice new floor. Other updates include the progress of the dill we planted. Maybe we’ve lost our green thumbs because the dill doesn’t look so great. It’s been thinned and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that it will continue to grow and bring us delicious flavor in the future. Wondering about the basil we planted? It’s growing strong and steady. Karen gets teary eyed over the Sony video camera. It is no longer functioning. Those wonderful features of a Carl Zeiss lens, internal gimbal stabilization and a super clear 20X Zoom lens are no longer available. Steve will have to catch the wild life with our cell phones. LED lights last a long time but also fail prematurely. Replacing with a WaveOne multi-color light certainly brightens up the salon. More maintenance. We're trying to trace down a very subtle leak. We know there is one because our accumulator is working properly and our water pump comes on to refill it even when a faucet is not being used. What is an accumulator? Fresh water systems on a boat include a holding tank, a water pump, and a device to reduce the amount of time the pump runs when using water. This is the job of an accumulator. Ours is a 2 gallon tank with a pressurized diaphragm. This enables the ability to turn on a faucet without the pump running every time. We certainly need a better storage system for pots and pans. Digging out our wok takes a bit of time but the stir fry we make with it is worth the effort. Thanks for subscribing!
