In this episode, we discover the harsh reality of Aitutaki. Between a rough harbor, limited services, and the constant challenges of life afloat, there's little chance to catch your breath. We may have left the open ocean behind, but we're deep in the "dangerous middle" of our South Pacific crossing—a stage where every decision matters. Chafing lines against coral, weather systems closing in, and the frustrations of checking out remind us that this adventure is far from over. Out here, you don't get to settle in. You don't get to relax. You simply prepare for the next challenge. #SailingLife #SailingAdventure #SouthPacific #Aitutaki #CruisingLife #CookIslands #dangerousmiddle NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. In this episode, we make the unexpected decision to leave Maupiha’a after less than a day and head for Aitutaki, crossing the remote stretch of the South Pacific known as “The Dangerous Middle” to revisit a place we last saw 13 years ago. But our sudden departure meant we were far from ready. During the three-day passage, we scrambled to process all of our fresh food, complete paperwork, navigate a skinny pass entrance, and med-moor in a muddy, coral-lined marina still under construction — on an island that wasn’t quite ready for its first boats of the season. It was a stressful ending to a very long journey. #sailing #sailboatlife #catamaranlife #southpacific #aitutaki #cookislands #maupihaa #offshoresailing #boatlife #liveaboard #cruisinglife #oceanadventure #sailingadventure #thedangerousmiddle #paradisefound #medmooring #passagemaking #yachtlife #livetheadventure #sailingyoutube NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? In this episode, our time in Maupiti comes to an end with a last-minute shopping spree to spend our remaining French Polynesian francs and a special package pickup for a family in Maupihā‘a. Then we set sail in what looked like the perfect weather window… but, as usual, the forecast had other plans. After an overnight passage, we arrived at one of the skinniest passes we’ve ever entered, surrounded by thousands of birds and thankfully calm seas. We couldn’t wait to finally experience everything Maupihā‘a had to offer — dinner with the local family, exploring the remote atoll, and soaking in one of the most isolated places in French Polynesia. But things didn’t go as planned. In this episode, we leave Bora Bora for Maupiti—a short hop to one of the most beautiful islands in French Polynesia, but also one of the most challenging to enter, thanks to its narrow pass. In this episode, we finally leave Moorea on an overnight passage to Bora Bora—but the conditions were much friskier than we expected! After arriving in Bora Bora, we fuel up and set off to circumnavigate the island by bike. Along the way, we stop at the gendarmerie to see if it’s possible to complete our check-out process in less than 24 hours. When they tell us it is possible, we jump into action and begin the final steps of clearing out of French Polynesia. But the adventure doesn’t stop there… watch to see the horrible discovery we made in the bilge, how the check-out process actually went, and what turned out to be our final provisioning run before departure. In this episode, with Brown’s girls safely home, it’s time for a full-on project sprint before we leave Tahiti. It’s a dizzying stretch of errands and repairs. Our new rain shades and refurbished helm enclosure are installed, we complete four doctor appointments, collect a year’s worth of medication, and receive great news from immigration. We also have our final rigging check, and Brown coats the freshly cleaned and tensioned rigging with an anti-corrosion treatment. Along the way, we attempt to track down a burning-wire smell at the windlass and investigate an error alarm on our Raymarine chartplotter. Our starboard engine won’t rev past 2000 RPM, and our port engine keeps shutting down completely—leaving us searching for answers fast. We try everything we can onboard: building our own fuel-polishing system, bypassing the fuel tanks, and eventually calling in a professional to help track down the problem. In this episode, we leave Toau on an overnight passage to Tikehau. We waited for a good weather window, hoping to avoid a repeat of our last passage. But as often happens here, the forecast was wrong—and despite our careful planning, we ended up facing exactly what we were trying to avoid. Watch to see how it all turned out. #sailing, #sailinglife, #liveaboard, #boatlife, #cruisinglife, #overnightpassage, #sailboatlife, #southpacific, #frenchpolynesia, #toau, #tikehau, #weatherwindow, #offshoresailing, #passagemaking, #oceanlife NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. In this episode, we take our final underwater breath in Fakarava before setting sail—though our destination kept shifting with every change in the wind. What followed was anything but routine. We sailed straight into a brutal storm that forced us to drop the sails and rely on the engines… which failed us yet again. After a month of relentless troubleshooting and zero progress, our frustration finally boiled over. Pushed to our breaking point, we had a conversation we never thought we’d have—seriously considering selling the boat right here in French Polynesia. #sailing #sailboatlife #liveaboard #fakarava #frenchpolynesia #sailingadventures #stormatsae #enginefailure #boatproblems #offshore #cruisinglife #liveaboardsailing #sailingcouple #roughseas #boatmaintenance NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? In this video, we sail north in Fakarava to escape incoming weather and take on a project we’ve been dreading—replacing a leaking saildrive ball valve. Our friend Brian is confident it can be done in the water, but we’re not so sure. With plenty that could go wrong, this repair has real consequences. Watch as we face the challenges head-on and race to keep ourselves from being dead in the water. #sailing #liveaboard #sailboatrepair #boatlife #cruisinglife #saildriverepair #saildrive #boatmaintenance #offshorerepair #leakingvalve #ballvalve #dieselinboard #sailingfrenchpolynesia #fakarava #remoteanchorage #weatherwindow #cruisingproblems #fixingboats #sailingadventures #lifesailboat #ballvalve NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? In this episode, we’re up before dawn, ready to depart for Fakarava—until the port engine refuses to start. After changing the filters, we cautiously make our way toward the pass, but trouble follows us: the port engine dies completely, and the starboard engine won’t rev past 1800 RPMs. We’re baffled and deeply disappointed. Forced to drop anchor, we spend the entire day troubleshooting a cascade of mechanical issues. By nightfall, we think we’ve solved them, and at first light the next morning, we set off once again for Fakarava. Everything seems fine—until we’re in the middle of the pass and the port engine dies… again. Do we push on? Do we turn back? What’s the wisest and safest decision? In this episode, we prepare for two major weather systems, including one that could become a tropical cyclone. Anchored in the northern part of Tahanea among a maze of bommies, keeping our chain clear while rotating 180 degrees is no small task. Amid the chaos and stress, we find a rare moment of calm to jump in the water—and witness something truly incredible. We became only the fifth people in the world to photograph this amazing natural phenomenon! #Tahanea #CyclonePrep #SailingAdventure #UnderwaterPhotography #RarePhenomenon #OceanLife #SailingLife #TropicalCyclone #AdventureAfloat #MarineWildlife #TravelByBoat #ExtremeSailing #mobulaterapacana #gardeneels NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? In this episode, a rare no-wind day lets us motor down to the Crescent Anchorage, where the scenery feels almost unreal—towering, puffy clouds mirrored perfectly on glassy water. We spend four incredible days exploring remote motus and the underwater world, soaking in everything this special place has to offer. But an earlier-than-forecast return of the east winds quickly changes the picture, turning the anchorage into an untenable spot. We head back toward the westernmost pass, and after checking the weather again, make the call to relocate—knowing the west side offers no protection once those east winds set in. Sometimes paradise comes with a very short window. #sailinglife #liveaboard #frenchpolynesia #tahanea #sailingadventure #anchorage #offgridsailing #oceanlife #islandexploration #catamaranlife #sailboatlife #vanlifeatsea #tropicalparadise #windshift #weatherwindows #pacificsailing NEW TO OUR CHANNEL?
