During our overnight passage, we discovered that our navigation lights weren’t working, so we began troubleshooting to figure out whether the bulb had failed or if the wiring had corroded. After running into a bigger issue than expected, we decided to pause the project until we can get the right parts. Thankfully, we had a much more exciting reason for coming to Moorea: swimming with the humpback whales. And what a welcome distraction it was! We joined Dr. Poole for a half-day whale tour and spent hours in the water with a mother and her calf. After seven weeks on our mooring in Huahine, we finally dropped the lines and headed to town to stage for our overnight passage to Moorea. The problem? We didn’t have a great weather window—but we booked a humpback whale swimming tour, and we really don’t want to miss it. For the next 24 hours, we watched the forecasts closely, debating whether we should go. The window looked possible, but definitely not ideal. The next morning, with the boat fully prepped for offshore sailing, we went out to assess the conditions for ourselves. To our surprise, the weather was far better than expected. So, we keep going. Through the night we made steady progress, and in the early morning we arrived in Moorea—tired, relieved, and excited. Our reward? We found it too difficult to attend the Heiva events from our location on the southeast side of Bora Bora, so we moved back to the southwest side of the island, which was much more convenient for getting around. Our new base proved to be a fantastic change, allowing us to attend the root vegetable competition, another dance performance, and even a modern boxing match.
