Developing a new climbing route isn't just about climbing. It's hauling gear, improving the boat, making the route safer, and solving one problem after another. Every project brings us one step closer to establishing a new first ascent on Newfoundland's remote south coast. 👉 Watch the full episode here - https://youtu.be/JWdpfzHtVxs #Shorts #RockClimbing #FirstAscent #Newfoundland #Sailing #Adventure #TradClimbing #WoodenBoat #ExploreCanada -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. After sailing to Newfoundland’s remote south coast, we established a wilderness base camp beneath the Nuddick and began exploring a granite wall that, as far as anyone knows, has never been climbed. This remote Newfoundland climbing expedition has taken months of planning, multiple gear hauls through difficult terrain, and countless miles aboard our wooden sailboat, Arabella. Now the ropes are fixed, the first routes are being scouted, and our attempt to establish new first ascents has officially begun. After months of preparing Arabella, we've finally reached the remote coast of Newfoundland where the real adventure begins. Icebergs, towering cliffs, and an unexplored wall we've dreamed about for nearly 20 years—this is why we came. Grey River is one of Newfoundland's most remote communities—accessible only by boat or helicopter—and the surrounding fjord is every bit as spectacular as we'd imagined. After eight months tied to the dock—and months frozen into a Newfoundland harbor—Arabella is finally moving again. Winter cover off. Fresh paint on. Lines cast off. The next adventure is underway. Spring in Newfoundland isn’t making boat work easy. Rain, cold, and wind keep delaying the big projects, but Steve is still getting deck work done one small job at a time. Watch the full episode here - https://youtu.be/UEC2rdcKZRA #BoatLife #Sailing #WoodenBoat #BoatProjects #Newfoundland #Shorts
Winter isn't actually over yet, but we still swapped out the ski gear for our rock climbing gear. The south coast of Newfoundland is calling our name. We have a few more sewing projects to wrap up, and then it'll be time to set sail for the summer. A messy deck offshore is more than annoying—it can become genuinely dangerous in rough weather. White oak instead of cedar. It made the boat heavier, slower, and harder to build. Steve made that call years ago because he always planned on sailing north — and oak survives ice in a way cedar simply doesn't. After four months frozen in Newfoundland, zero regrets. 🪵 #woodenboatbuilding #sailingNewfoundland #boatbuilding #diy #acorntoarabella
I’ve had this hatchet since I was 12…I've repaired the handle at least a dozen times, and I'll probably repair it a dozen more times over the course of my lifetime. This time, I fixed it right here on the boat. Sometimes the tools you’ve carried the longest are the ones worth keeping going. Before crossing a frozen pond in the backcountry, we think about two things: Probability—how likely something is to happen Consequence—how bad it would be if it does. In this clip from our Baker’s Brook expedition in Newfoundland, Steve explains the simple framework adventure guides use to make safer decisions in uncertain conditions. Crossing a frozen pond in the backcountry can be dangerous — but with the right systems, the risk can be managed. In this clip from our Baker’s Brook expedition in Newfoundland, Steve explains how we assess changing conditions while skiing across the ice — checking thickness every few feet and using techniques that reduce both the chances of breaking through and the consequences if it happens. Crossing a frozen pond in the backcountry can be dangerous—but with the right systems, the risks can be managed. In this clip from our Baker’s Brook Pond expedition in Newfoundland, Steve explains how we reduce the chances of breaking through thin ice: testing the ice every few feet, spreading weight on skis, spacing out with ropes, and preparing for what happens if someone does go through. Backcountry travel is all about turning a potentially deadly situation into an inconvenient one.
