After 3 years of service Steve makes a big change to the rudder head taking off the bronze hardware and replacing it with a more traditional wooden setup. Not too much bronze has been removed from Arabella (fortunately!), but this change will make steering much more pleasant. Then the crew makes one of their last bushwhacks back to the massive cliff known as The Nuddick to continue trying to establish some sport climbing routes. The time in Newfoundland is drawing to a close as soon it will be time to point the boat south and head back to the US, so drink in all the scenery while you still can! -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Months of preparation have led to this moment. After hauling hundreds of pounds of climbing and camping gear deep into Newfoundland's wilderness, we finally establish base camp beneath the Nuddick—a spectacular granite wall that, as far as anyone knows, has never been climbed. Before any first ascents can begin, there are still plenty of challenges to overcome. We scout potential routes, shuttle supplies, secure Arabella for an extended stay, battle relentless black flies, and begin the first rappel onto the face to see if these dream lines are actually climbable. This is the moment the expedition truly begins. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. The adventure we've been planning all winter has finally begun. After leaving the tiny outport of Francois, we make the journey north to Twillingate in search of Newfoundland's famous spring icebergs before returning to Arabella and continuing east along the remote south coast. Then comes the moment Steve has been waiting nearly two decades for. After years of studying maps, satellite imagery, and old reports, we finally sail past the massive unclimbed granite wall that inspired this entire expedition. Standing beneath it, it's hard to believe it's real. With over 100 pounds of climbing gear ferried ashore, we begin preparing for what we hope will become the first new climbing routes established on these incredible cliffs in over a decade. But before any climbing can begin, Arabella needs a secure anchorage. That means building a custom stern mooring system that will allow us to safely leave the boat while we disappear into the wilderness for days at a time. This is what we came for. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Sometimes chasing tour dreams can take you a long way from everything else. A rock climbers dream summer trip is in the making as Steve and Robin close in on The Nuddick, a massive and virtually unexplored wall that is WELL off the beaten path, by a LOT. Hang with us as we spend the next couple of months doing as many first ascents on this beast as we possibly can!

Arabella is free of her long winter stay in Corner Brook and things are back on the move again. After some shuffling back and forth Robin and Steve start to make their way east toward this summers ultimate destination, a virtually unexplored gigantic cliff called The Nuddick. There's plenty to see on the way there as Steve does a little motor repair to Victoria's outboard to get her up to speed again. Then the clan sails into the absolutely stunning Grey River, a narrow fjord with 1,000-foot cliffs rising to either side. Very dramatic! If only we were allowed to fish for the salmon swimming right under the boat. Sad! But The Nuddick is getting closer. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. After eight months tied to the dock in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Arabella is finally getting ready to move again. This week, Steve removes the winter cover, finishes a series of custom sewing projects aboard the boat, hauls Arabella for her spring maintenance, and gets her ready for another season of adventure. After a winter spent frozen into the harbor, everyone was eager to find out how the hull had survived months of ice, wind, and storms. Thankfully, the results were better than expected. With fresh paint, a serviced propeller, and a long list of projects finally checked off, Arabella is launched once again and begins her journey toward Newfoundland's remote south coast. For the first time in months, the boat is moving under sail—and summer adventures are finally within reach. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Spring may have arrived on the calendar, but Newfoundland hasn't gotten the memo. With cold rain, wind, and freezing temperatures delaying the bigger projects, Steve turns his attention to the long list of maintenance jobs that keep a wooden sailboat ready for life offshore. This week aboard Arabella, that means repairing a favorite handmade scraper, repitching deck seams, scraping and preparing the pine deck for fresh oil, and rebuilding a heavily worn anchor pendant that has seen years of use at anchor and on moorings. These aren't the glamorous jobs, but they're the ones that keep a traditional wooden sailboat healthy, dry, and ready for adventure. The weather may still be fighting us, but Arabella's departure for Newfoundland's remote south coast is getting closer by the day. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Wrapping up bigger canvas projects means a lot of leftover material, so Steve takes a couple of hours to knock out a quick, practical upgrade for Arabella’s 100-foot nylon anchor rode. Replacing an old, non-draining nylon stuff sack that was a hassle to flake rope into, Steve builds a custom "bucket-style" rope bag from scrap sailcloth, a breathable mesh bottom, and spare webbing. Armed with the Sailrite machine, he adds heavy-duty carry handles and a top clip system to ensure the line's eye-splice never gets lost at the bottom of the bag. Before Arabella heads south for another season of exploration, Steve returns to where the journey first began—the woods and stumps where the oak trees for the boat were harvested more than 10 years ago. What was once a busy milling site covered in sawdust, logs, and lumber stacks has slowly returned to forest. The stumps remain, the next generation of trees is already growing, and the cycle continues. Back aboard the boat, preparations for summer expeditions along Newfoundland’s remote south coast are ramping up. Climbing ropes, bolts, static lines, and expedition gear are unpacked and sorted as Steve and Robin get ready to explore massive granite walls that may hold untouched climbing routes. Meanwhile, another round of sewing projects aboard Arabella continues, including custom rope bags, cockpit storage, and new awnings designed to make life aboard cleaner, cooler, and more functional for the adventures ahead. The next chapter is getting closer. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Winter still has Newfoundland in its grip, but while the harbor freezes over again outside, work aboard Arabella continues. This week, Steve tackles one of the biggest frustrations—and potential dangers—of reefing sails offshore at night in rough conditions: managing dozens of loose lines on a moving deck. Inspired by rope bags used in the climbing world, he designs and sews a completely custom line-management system for Arabella’s masts, turning scrap sailcloth and mesh into organized reefing bags built specifically for life offshore. From prototypes and pattern making to stitching intricate baffles and fitting the final bags around the mast, this became one of the most ambitious sewing projects aboard the boat so far. At sea, small improvements can make a huge difference—and we’re hoping this one will make reefing safer, faster, and far less chaotic when conditions turn rough. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. After months of work, trial and error, and a few unexpected setbacks, we finally finished building our own sail covers and stack packs for Arabella. What started as a winter project turned into a full deep dive into canvas work—designing, patterning, sewing, breaking the machine, waiting weeks for parts, and learning as we went. In this video, we walk through the entire process, the improvements we made over our old setup, and why doing it ourselves might have been one of the best upgrades we could make for the boat. From better drainage and durability to smarter line management and even integrated awnings, these new covers should completely change how Arabella looks and functions underway. This summer has been a long time coming. Long before Arabella was ever launched, there was a dream—to sail north, reach remote places, and go after untouched granite walls that few people have ever seen, let alone climbed. Now, after years of building, sailing, and learning, we finally have the opportunity to go for it. In this update, we’re sharing the plan for the summer: heading to Newfoundland’s remote south coast to explore and potentially develop first ascents on one of the most inaccessible and promising cliffs in the region. It’s the kind of place most climbers never get the chance to reach—and the kind of adventure Arabella was built for. There’s still a lot of work to do before we get there, but the goal is set. Now it’s time to make it happen. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Not a boat builder. Not a sailor. Steve built Arabella from scratch — cut the trees, milled the lumber, and planked her in white oak so she could handle this. Frozen solid in Newfoundland in April, and the door won't even open. Arabella is a 38ft gaff ketch built entirely by hand and sailed 6,000 miles up and down the eastern seaboard. This is what that looks like in winter. 🌲 Full build series: https://www.youtube.com/acorntoarabella 📍 Currently: Newfoundland, Canada #Shorts #boatbuilding #woodenboat #sailinglife #handbuilt #DIY #arabella #acorntoarabella #Newfoundland #sailboat

Winter is finally starting to loosen its grip in Newfoundland, and that means one thing—spring boat projects are underway aboard Arabella. This week, we shift gears from skiing and backcountry travel to life aboard the boat, tackling the kinds of projects that keep a wooden sailboat ready for the next season. From repairing a decades-old hatchet that’s been part of this journey since childhood to rebuilding parts of the interior and preparing new wood for upcoming repairs, it’s all about making do with what we have and improving things one step at a time. Working aboard a boat in a limited space—with limited tools—means every project is a balance between function, efficiency, and adaptability. Nothing is ever truly finished, and everything is designed to evolve. As the ice begins to break up around Arabella, the focus shifts toward getting the boat ready for the upcoming cruising season—and all the adventures that come with it. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. It’s been 10 years since we cut down the first tree and started building Arabella. Since then, this journey has taken us from the forest to the water—and now all the way to a frozen winter in Newfoundland. Along the way, there have been incredible highs, tough lows, and more adventure than we ever could have imagined. In this episode, we take a moment to reflect on that journey, share what’s changed, what hasn’t, and where we’re headed next. As we look ahead to a new season of sailing and exploration, we’re also making a few changes to how we create and share these videos. We’ll be shifting to a bi-weekly format for long-form episodes while adding more short-form content in between—so there’s still something new every week, just in a slightly different way. We’re also celebrating this milestone with a limited-run tee-shirt campaign, with proceeds going directly toward keeping Arabella moving—boat work, gear upgrades, and preparing for the next chapter along Newfoundland’s south coast. Thank you for being part of this journey. We truly couldn’t do it without you. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! After a tough start to the season that left Ben injured and out of commission for a couple of weeks, we’re finally back—and back to adventure. This episode picks up with a return to the cabin, where local friends Rod and Alvin take us deeper into life in this rugged part of the world. From checking rabbit traps and ice fishing to hearing firsthand stories of growing up on remote islands, it’s a glimpse into a way of life shaped by isolation, resilience, and community. Then it’s back into the mountains. Steve and Carter set out to find a hidden ice climb they’d previously spotted from the highway—but with no trail and limited time, it turns into a full-on route-finding mission from above, rappelling into the unknown and hoping they’ve landed in the right place. Between setbacks, exploration, and a few hard-earned lessons, this week is about getting back on your feet—and back out there. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts.
