On this episode we find our fresh water supply is contaminated while on passage and come hard about pointing for the city of Ambon where we tied up to a Fish Market for a few days to clean the tanks and restock our water before heading on.

We are back to some project videos and this time we make the final push on completing the Galley redesign and build out.

On this episode I talk a little bit about the project then we get into cutting out the 54 year old galley counter top with careful consideration for the new counter. We will be making a custom "ice box" refrigerator that will fill all of the available space beneath the counter top to starboard.

The next several episodes of this "Galley Redux" series will show us cutting the foam and making templates, the construction of the ice box, the dry fit and finally the installation of the new ice box and cold plate system so Camille can have all the cold beer her heart desires.

'Free Spirit' is a Buizen 48, hull 10, launched in July 1997 and is exclusively for sale with YOTI on Pittwater.

We’ve all heard about the pedigree of these classic Australian built vessels, the 10,000 build hours they took to hand craft, and the quality materials used. 'Free Spirit' is a testament to these truly great yachts. This is an impressive example.

The Buizen design is clearly centered around the Pilot House / Deck Saloon interior. Think all weather protection and a safe and welcoming saloon space that truly connects with your surroundings – very few options come close to offering the same. Her layout features the additional twin cabin opposite the galley which gives maximum accommodation and internal storage space. The master cabin is forward with private ensuite, the galley is more akin to a mini superyacht, there is a comfortable private double aft cabin, a second day head and shower plus the very practical pilot berth cabin. There is a 6.5KVA generator and air conditioning.

Standing rigging was replaced in 2019 and the vessel has been professionally and regularly maintained. Free Spirit features the larger rig and boom option which assists in lighter airs. There are two auto-pilot systems and all sailing is handled from the cockpit. The in-mast furling system is hydraulic. Notably there are six cockpit winches (two are powered) compared to the standard 4 winches found on most 48’s.

The fact that four Buizen 48’s raced at the most recent Hamilton Island Race week confirms not only will these great yachts be around for many years to come and will indeed outlive the vast majority of other yachts, but they are still excelling at what they do best – extended coastal and ocean cruising in great comfort. Multiple Buizen 48’s have circumnavigated not only Australia but our entire blue planet.
