Shelter bay Marina, Colon, Panama. Preparing the boat for crossing the Panama canal. It's a time for stress and hard work in the build up to getting everything ready for going to the Pacific. Time is running out and with only a few days left I have to raise cash, find crew, arrange food and supplies for 6 people and make good all on board before we can go though the Panama canal.

Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.

The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v.
Underwater video Gopro3plus.

Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.

Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.

Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

This video shows the difference between Stiff and Tender Ships. What are the causes, characteristics, and corrective actions?

Stiff ship refers to a ship that has a large metacentric height, caused by a KG being too small.

Tender ship refers to a ship with low initial stability due, to a small metacentric height, caused by a KG being too big.

Our oceans are dying and sailors can make a change!

We met with a Marine Biologist, Frida Sanchez at Boot Düsseldorf boat show to discuss some important questions to help sailors understand our affect on our oceans.

Earth's oceans are vast. Covering more than 70% of the planet's surface! Oceans are the backbone to our ecosystems, our planet only works with healthy oceans. Right now, they are acutely endangered, in need of help and sailors can play a big part in helping to protect our oceans.

Many thanks for our time with the German Ocean Foundation @deutschemeeresstiftung for this video. Follow them on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/deutschemeeresstiftung

The German Ocean Foundation creates synergies of knowledge and action by involving science, economy, politics and society, specifically youth to overcome the present vulnerable climate and create a strong voice for our oceans.

The all new HH52 is an evolution of our Morrelli Melvin designed, award winning HH50, which we have reimagined with electrification in mind and two different helm options. Owners can specify either aft swing helms or a forward cockpit with optional tiller chairs. Regardless of which design you choose, this yacht brings the very latest design features and performance improvements to our mid-size luxury cruising catamaran.

The HH52-OC is roughly the same price as an Outremer 52, meanwhile a full carbon HH52-SC is considerably cheaper than a Balance 526 or Kinetic KC54. As of today, hulls are still available for a 2026 delivery. For a detailed information packet, please contact us here:
