Episode #276 : Season 9 : The South Pacific

Hello Friends,

On this episode I say good bye to Raiatea and make a short, but breeze hope to the other side of the lagoon to the island of Taha'a. With the Tradewinds blowing strong I found it impossible to make my intended anchorage and change course to find a safe spot to spend the night. The next morning I haul up and move out to the shallows near Coral Gardens.

All good things come to an ens - and so is Maldives Yacht Rally, where we still get a chance for a nice snorkel with fellow yachties and soon after (but only after taking PCR tests) we take off to the last Rally sail - and what a treat we FINALLY had a wind! :) We arrived to the Patina Marina, where we will have a Gala celebration and awards. Very fancy — Ritz Carlton and some futuristic looking boats in the same, beautiful marina. Wow, that was an amazing party… And so sad it’s over… Still not ready to be alone so join our friends at Hulhumale, where we all provision, get gas and get moving on… Join us!

Thanks so much for watching 🙏

How to tie the Water Bowline knot 🥨 : (Vulcan method). I really like this knot because, well, I like super-charged knots, and this is a bowline with a bit of extra spinach.
...
It's really useful for tying off your 🚤 tender to the dock (a Bowline knot can slip if it's pushed and pulled) . It's called the Water Bowline because it likes getting wet. Perfect!
....
If you use the Vulcan method, (see our video how to tie a Spock Bowline as well), it's dead easy.
...
First off, make that Vulcan Salute 🖖 and remember to mutter "Live Long and Prosper" under your breath. Not too loud otherwise the other yachties might start staring at you.
...
Now loop your working end round your 3rd and 4th fingers like you would in the Bowline. Now make another loop around your 1st and second fingers.
...
If you are tying off to a ring, this would be a good time to feed it through and back.
...
Now you are just going to get your 🐰 rabbit (working end) up and down 2 holes instead of one. Easy! When you come back round the standing end, just follow the line back and you have your turbo-charged Bowline. If a dinghy drifts off the dock, I bet it's not yours, you'll be the one smirking over a cold beer.

Ever wish your boat engines had more ponies?

One of the BEST value upgrades on our boat was installing a set of STEINBAUER Power Modules on the Yanmar 4JH45 marine diesel engines. By optimising the tune, these modules give us around 60 horse power per side, while also improving our fuel consumption and leaving no footprint on the ECU.

The module we show emulates the 4JH57 at a lower cost than an engine swap. It is an essential upgrade for a Leopard 45 and Leopard 42 Catamaran, as well as others with the 4JH45 installed.

Currently there are modules for the Yanmar 4JH series and Volvo Penta D3. If you have a different engine reach out to STEINBAUER; they may have already done the development for the engine your boat has!

In this video we explain:

• What STEINBAUER PowerModules are
• Benefits of having them installed on your yacht
• How the installation works on a marine diesel

We also take you out on a test drive on another Leopard Catamaran to see the difference in performance when one engine has the STEINBAUER PowerModule tune and the other is left standard.

Relevant to a range of catamaran brands including Vision Yachts, Leopard Catamarans, Maverick Catamarans, Fountaine Pajot, Lagoon Catamarans and Knysna.

For Yanmar 4JH45 owners who were considering upgrading to a Yanmar 4JH57, this is the answer!

Season 7 : Episode #172 : Exploring the Magic of Potato Harbor and Speaking with the USCG

Hello Friends,

On this weeks episode we sail off of anchor departing Prisoners Harbor on Santa Cruz Island with a light morning breeze and point for Little Scorpion to meet up with John Conway of SV Felurian.

John and Alanna have started their own Youtube Channel and we encourage everyone to check out their episodes and subscribe : https://www.youtube.com/channe....l/UCS9CLW7y5LqPQkvCy

On our way to Little Scorpion we decided to pop into the very small anchorage of Potato Harbor to have a look and decide to drop a lunch hook and explore this beautiful little anchorage.

While we were in the water the USCG hailed us on the VHF and John, heading to meet us, responded to their call and let them know we were safe and sound and where we were. A fisherman had recovered our adrift dinghy off of Sandy Point on Santa Rosa Island so the USCG had deployed its assists to look for us.

Since we believed our dinghy never left the horseshoe bay of San Miguel we never even considered reporting it missing to the USCG. This was an important lesson to us and now we know to always report a dinghy missing if it is lost either at anchor or under tow.

Thanks again to the United States Coast Guard for keeping all of us mariners safe!

After our chat with the Coast Guard Cutter we made our way to Little Scorpion and rendezvoused with SV Felurian.

| Season 2 | Episode 22 |

On this episode I awoke at Pelican Bay after a perfect night on the hook and watch dolphins and a humpback whale pass by the anchorage as I prepare to leave.

I made my way over to Little Scorpion and dropped the hook for the night, after which I went snorkeling and exploring the sea caves and rocks surrounding the anchorage.

-

The last week of 2017 I took an amazing solo sailing trip to the Channel Islands. I visit six anchorages on Santa Cruz Island before sailing for Catalina Island and tying up in Isthmus Cove for New Years Eve. We sailed back on New Years Day enjoying sunshine, great wind and thousands of dolphins.

While I was on my trip I started my first podcast and the first episode is up online now. The podcast is titled “A STERN VIEW” and is something of a cruising guide to anchorages and sailing destinations. Each episode is recorded on location and I cover everything I know about the anchorage from my research and experience at the anchorage.

I also kept a journal in my logbook and will be posting them as a blog with still photos. This will act as support to the A STERN VIEW podcast as will each new video episode that features the anchorage covered in the podcast episodes.

The journal and Podcast can be seen and heard here: http://svtriteia.com

My main go to guidebook for this trip was "Cruising Guide to Southern California's Offshore Islands: With Sailing Directions for the Santa Barbara Channel's Mainland Coast" by Brian Fagen which can be found here : http://amzn.to/2HOxAU1

If you like the podcast please subscribe to it on iTunes and rate / review it as it helps in the ratings! Please reach "A Stern View" in iTunes!

I have started a new short video series titled Sea Stories that are only available for my Patrons. If you would like to contribute you can do so here https://www.patreon.com/sailorjames

Also if you like this video please give it a thumbs up! It helps me get more viewers!

Thanks to all of you for watching and being so supportive with your comments and likes! It makes me really happy to know you like the videos and to hear your feedback.

Episode 36:
To understand the full extent of our sailboat’s damage, we’re taking it apart—inside and out. The next big step? Unstepping the mast, which is a huge risk on land. Our mast runs straight through the deck into the saloon, meaning a massive crane is needed to carefully lift it without compromising the boat’s stability on the stands.

Catch some raw emotions as we face this nerve-wracking process and see what live on board has been lately.

We apologize for having to blur so much in this episode to respect everyone’s privacy. Thank you for your understanding and for sticking with us on this journey! ♥️

In this episode, I am setting sail again, this time toward Bali Indonesia. This is a 628 nautical miles solo sail nonstop, and it looks like I will arrive in Bali on the exact same date I left Panama 12 months ago. Meaning I can look back at 11705 nautical miles in the last 12 months.

Timor Leste has been such a beautiful experience but it's time to move on. My long-stay visa is waiting for me in Bali, and I also have lots of things to sort out. The weather window this time is just perfect and will give me a very pleasant sail for a change.

I cant wait to explore Bali and to finally get som rest and not having any stress with visa rules and scheduels for a while.

Thank you so much for tagging along, and for the patron's support in making this video possible.

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
I'm a sailor with a YouTube channel and not a YouTuber. Sailing around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser mostly solo, making videos whenever we have time for it.
Comfortable at sea with 4 decades of sailing experience and hundreds of thousands of miles behind me.

Even though this is season 6 on YouTube I did not make that many videos in the beginning, and obviously not from my entire sailing life. Before full-time sailing 6 years ago, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing and racing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience as a captain in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.
