For eight weeks in French Polynesia, I was enchanted. Landscapes I'd never seen before, friendly people, unspoilt nature. When I arrived in Samoa and Tonga, the feeling of flow changed. Suddenly everything becomes difficult and tedious. Why? Is that also part of travelling? I'm sailing alone on the Reykja, a 35-year-old steel ketch. My route: from Samoa to Niuatoputapu and the Vava'u archipelago in Tonga.

Hope you enjoy this short bonus episode where I reveal another modern navigation hack.
Wifi on a sailing boat is so much more than wasting time on social media. It's safety and navigation for some of us. And I love to share the new doors this tech opens for average sailors.

Lots of misunderstandings about AIS and even wrong information are shared online. In this episode, I explain very short about AIS and new modern ways to utilize this powerful tool. There are lots of other opportunities and I have many more hacks to share. What I am sharing in this video is not brand-new tools or tech. But the way I combine this with the new opportunities that are within range for most sailors today could be an eye-opener. I'm not trying to teach you anything, only sharing how I do things. Hopefully, I can contribute to better safety for sailors and even inspire some to. I love the options I now have to use Marin Traffic while sailing because of StarLink. It's basically a game-changer in so many ways. I strongly recommend sailors to not only receive but also broadcast AIS. Especially for those who wanna go blue water sailing. Some nations like Indonesia will not let you into their country without an MMSI number and a working AIS. Some nations with a reporting regime towards pleasure boats accept your AIS as a tool giving you the freedom of not needing to check in and report your position. So for long-distance sailors having an AIS is a no-brainer. And also safer.

Thank you so much for tagging along, and for the patrons helping to support making this video possible.

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
Sailing around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever we have time for it. I used to sail singlehanded and occasionally have sailing friends onboard.

Even though this is season 6 on YouTube I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean prior to, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.

PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS!
I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things that might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.

While visiting the Cannes Yachting Festival in France we met very nice guys - Chis and Heyden - both experienced an Orca attack close to Barbate, Spain shores.
June 2023 they were sailing Amel 55 from Lagos, Portugal to the Med and although both were experienced and believed to be prepared for that - it was still a shock.
They had been attacked for an hour by 8 or 9 orcas and had to be towed to the marina and repair their rudder.
As harsh as it sounds - they were lucky compared to the other orca incident that Hayden witnessed half a year earlier - October 2022, when the boat sunk and they rescued 4 people…
Join us - this is really unique!
All raw footage - at the end.
As of now orcas did serious damage for 60 boats and sank 3 boats.

If you would like to reach out to Chris or Heyden, here is their contacts:
Chris WhatsApp number +19496894129; email: chrisgarau@yahoo.com
Hayden's WhatsApp number +642102747432; email: Hayden.FosterNZ@gmail.com

The Anchor Setup - Part 3 - The Lofrans Manual Windlass

This episode is a Throwback project video, one of many I will be uploading every couple of weeks. As I mentioned before I undertook a lot of major projects in preparation for the Channel Islands trip and I shot a ton of video.

In this video I drill out the holes for the bow roller and windlass, prep them and refill them with epoxy to seal the core.

I know many of my subscribers really enjoy the refit videos so I will be working these in over the next couple of months. I just couldn’t wait to share my adventure videos, as that is the entire reason I worked so hard on these projects to allow me the ability to sail and explore new places.

Thanks for watching!

This camera with its hyper smooth (Think like if Berry White and Sade had a child) image stabilization our new footage will be gimbal quality on dives and on hikes!

As I said in the video, last month was the most contributions we have ever had ($205) so we took that and put in $179 of our own money and got this incredible new camera that will make the videos even better!

From here on out the videos will ACTUALLY be made possible by you!

Episode #261 : Season 9 : The South Pacific Adventures

Hello Friends,

Feeling unsure about the protection of the anchorage at Motu Faama, I decided to haul up and head back to Kia Ora Anchorage ahead of the Maramu winds that were forecasted to arrive later that afternoon.

After riding out a weeks worth of high winds at Kia Ora, I was finally able to head ashore, get fuel and provisions and prepare to leave Rangiroa.

Ever wondered how to paint a sailboat? I rolled and tipped Pettit Easy Poxy Sailboat paint but I cheated and made it even easier to paint a sailboat! I let you know which sanders worked and didn't work sanding a sailboat, apply vinyl stickers to my sailboat, and which products I used to sand and clean and paint my sailboat are covered.

Hello Friends,

This episode was filmed the morning after our Fourth of July trip to the island where we had a lot of problems with our bilge pump and switch.

I replaced our old cheap dead bilge pump and switch with a new:

RULE 1100 GPH - 4164 LPH Blige Pump
and a RULE Super Switch - Model 37A

This video was made to try and explain how bilge pumps are set up and how to replace them with an existing system in place. I hope this helps some of y'all who are installing a bilge pump for the first time or replacing a bilge pump on your boat.

Thanks for watching!

This episode is PACKED with cool stuff - beautiful New Zealand landmarks, fabulous Birthday Party; visiting Cape Reinga, Te Paki Sand Dunes, 90 mile beach, Waitangi Treaty Grounds & Maori museum and of course Tall Ship Rally in Russell. We could easily make 5 more episodes about this juicy content, but we so badly want to catch up and be closer to where we are now. So please forgive us for brief overview and keep calm - Aquarius upgrades and maintenance video is in progress, and as Ken wants nothing less perfection - you'll have to wait just a bit longer...
I hope you will enjoy this episode and meanwhile let's stay in touch via Facebook and Instagram for most up to date events & locations.

Episode 04 : Santa Barbara to Monterey - with Sailor Commentary at the end of the episode.

This video documents the recent sailing trip I crewed on onboard the sailing vessel The Intrepid. We motor-sailed from San Diego, California to the San Francisco Bay area. 10 days, 111 hours at sea and 470 nautical miles. The uphill battle against wind and currents, sailing north on the west coast is no pleasure cruise.

The crew were as follows:
Tim Brill (Owner)
Cody Brill (Captain and son of Tim)
Nigel Howat (English Sailor/45+ years sailing experience)
& James Frederick (thats me).

I have a blog where you can read all the journal entries about each leg of the passage: http://allwaysbutstill.tumblr.com

I will also be uploaded each leg of the trip as "episodes" that will feature commentary at the end reading some of the journal entries and talking about what happened or what we saw on that particular part of the trip.

Please subscribe if you like the video, there will be more !

About the Crew Members:
Tim Brill was a professional mountaineering guide for many years and has climbed all over the world. A few years ago Tim bought The Intrepid, which became famous in 2008 as it sailed around the world by the youngest person to solo sail around the world (Zac Sunderland). Tim and his sons have completed the ASA certifications 101-108 and have several trips in the planning stages. Currently he is owns an Aerobatic Flight School in Reno, Nevada where he teaches people to fly and to do stunts. http://www.aerobaticcompany.com

Cody Bril is a 15 year old sailor and sailing instructor in Reno, Nevada. He is currently shopping for his dream multihull. http://nvsailing.org

Nigel Howat is certified Ocean Yacht Master and nautical handyman who owns a company with his partner Miel. They also do Yacht deliveries up the California Coast. He has been sailing from more than 45 years and has sailed the North and Mediterranean seas. http://www.nauticalknowhow.org

James Frederick is a Sailor, Writer and Artist who currently resides in Los Angeles.
