Episode #188 - UP WITH THE STICK
Hello Friends,
The time has FINALLY arrived to step the NEW MAST ! This turned out to be a MUCH bigger feat than lowering our old mast with the same process. The new mast is likely twice heavier and so much more is at stake.
I hope to NEVER have to do this again with our mast. Next time we will use a crane. I would say its a perfectly suitable method of raising and lowering mast that isn't super loaded up with halyards, double spreaders, radar, masthead equipment and all of the weight of the wiring that comes with it.
A very stressful experience for me but it all went off perfectly.

Episode 368 : Season 12 : Sailing Australia
Hello Friends,
On this episode we slip the line at Castle Lagoon and make our way deeper into Cowan Creek. It echos our time in the Marlborough Sounds of New Zealand with its deep coves and inlets and general lack of manmade structures. After not finding good holding to anchor, we continue on to Twilight Inlet and pick up a mooring ball for the night.

Hello Friends,
We would love it if you would join us for a live stream this weekend where we talk about our time in the land down under and say goodbye Australia. We are currently anchored at Horn Island just across from Thursday Island where we will be clearing out the day after the live stream to sail to Indonesia.
We have plenty of more adventure episodes still to come for our Australian Adventures, but I always like to do live streams before leaving a country and sailing on to reflect on all that we have seen and done.
We have sailed 2150NM from Sydney up through the Great Barrier Reef around Cape York to the very top of Australia. Visiting 85 anchorages along the way, exploring historic and wild places and meeting a ton of amazing people.
The live chat will be on so make sure you pop on and say hi and ask any questions you might have about our time here and our future plans.

Hello Friends,
On this episode we sail out into the Great Barrier Reef and visit Lady Musgrave Island, a coral atoll lagoon with a small sand cay (island). We snorkeled daily and enjoyed exploring the small island. We absolutely loved Lady Musgrave and both agreed it has been the best adventure so far!!!

Episode 344 : Season 10 : New Zealand - Aotearoa
Hello Friends,
On this episode I haul up anchor at Great Barrier Island after an amazing stay and make way for Waiheke Island to hide from some approaching weather. The passage started out quiet but as the day progressed the seas started to build in the Hauraki Gulf and by the time I approached Waiheke the seas were charging and the winds were force 5.
I eventually made my way around to the south side of the island and tucked into Putiki Bay in the howling winds.

Episode 404 : Season 13 : Sailing Indonesia
Hello Friends,
On this episode we visit the Bajo Sea Gypsy village of Sampela at Wakatobi National Park. Our guide, Dan, is a member of the tribe and took us to his home on his amazing fishing boat where his wife prepared lunch for us of a fish Dan had caught the day before.
Visiting this village was mind blowing for me! The construction of the houses over the reef, the super sketchy boardwalks and minimal living conditions felt like something out of a movie, yet here we were exploring this amazing place. This was certainly the highlight of my circumnavigation so far!
You can find out more about the Bajo Tribe here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bajo

Hello Friends,
On this episode we navigate our way though the many unhidden dangers that come with poorly charted waters. Using satellite images as charts I plotted our course through the dangers using only the visual of the images and not traditional sea charts we usually use and trust.
We arrived at an amazing unnamed cay in the Take Bonerate National Park and were treated to surreal scenes.

THE FALKEN SAGAS: An Epic Adventure with 59º North Sailing Along The Viking Route:
Newfoundland to Greenland to Iceland.
Welcome to The Falken Sagas series. I left Triteia in her southern hemisphere’s winter berth in Whangarei, New Zealand and flew back to North America to meet up with Andy Schell and 59º North Sailing. Andy had invited me to join him on a high latitude adventure onboard their Farr 65, Falken, to sail the Viking Route from Newfoundland to Greenland, transit Prince Christian Sound and sail on to the West Fjords of Iceland across the North Atlantic. Along for this adventure was Andy’s First Mate Vilma and the crew of the Falken; Jim, Matt, Richa, Johnathan, Charlotte, Gavin, Alejandro & Nick.
I have made several long format films and video episodes documenting our journey and adventures. Starting with preparations in Newfoundland then our passage to Greenland, our time cruising in Southern Greenland and our passage to Iceland. All of the drone footage you see in the films was shot by Andy Schell, otherwise all the footage was filmed by myself on a GoPro hero 10.
About 59º North:
ANDY SCHELL & MIA KARLSSON started 59º North to pursue their own passion for offshore sailing and to share it with other like-minded people out there who yearn to see what's over the horizon & learn about themselves in the process. We set an ambitious schedule, sailing 10,000 MILES PER YEAR making landfall in ports from the Caribbean to the Arctic, Bermuda, Europe, Cuba, Canada & more, with the world's oceans as our stomping ground. Since 2015 our team has grown to include some of our best friends and like-minded sailors – AUGUST SANDBERG, EMMA GARSCHAGEN, RYAN FINSTAD, LEE CUMBERLAND & RYAN ELLISON – all working together to pursue our passions.
In 2020 we started THE QUARTERDECK, a unique-to-sailing online membership platform where we dive deep on the art of seamanship. Members have direct access to us, we have a growing resource library of onboard checklists, SOPs, logbooks and more, and we’ve moved all of our LIVE sessions onto the platform for members only.
Since 2013 we’ve published weekly podcasts on sailing, and now have three distinct shows — ON THE WIND, the main interview show hosted by Andy Schell, August Sandberg , Nikki Henderson & Emma Garschagen; THE QUARTERDECK PODCAST, a more technical, companion show to our online platform; and SAILING STORIES, a unique, serialized podcast showcasing ‘tales from the high seas, told week by week.’ All of our podcasts are free, and always will be — available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
If you've dreamed of seeing STARS DOWN TO THE HORIZON, if you yearn to LOSE SIGHT OF LAND for days on end, if you want to UNPLUG from the world ashore and TRAVEL TO NEW LANDS at a human pace, then join us for the OFFSHORE SAILING ADVENTURE of a lifetime. We'll see you on the high seas. HOLD FAST!

Episode 386 : Season 12 : Sailing Australia
Hello Friends,
On this episode we haul up the anchor in 30 knot gusts and sail off into a squally day. We had fantastic sailing wind and the air was warm so the rain didn't bother us much. This turned out to be one of our favorite sailing days of the year! Soon we were approaching Middle Percy Island and got the hook dropped at West Bay.
I had read about Middle Percy Island in the book "Around the World in Wanderer III" by Eric Hiscock from their visit here in 1955. I was eager to see if the old telephone booth from the book was still onsite. We had also heard about the famous Percy Island Yacht Club, which is a simple A-frame structure and were interested to see all of the signs and mementos from cruisers who have visited over the years. We had prepared our own plaque to leave with the collection, a fun nautical tradition amongst cruising sailors the world over.

Hello Friends,
This is the long format episode that chronicles my 32 day, 2300 nm passage from Los Angeles to Honolulu onboard my 1965 Alberg 30 sailboat SV TRITEIA.
1000 miles from Hawaii my rudder failed due to striking a submerged object (that was painted red). After failed attempts to secure the control lines to the rudder due to large seas and high winds I was forced to steer with a small "Sea Squid" drogue for 18 days.
Triteia is equipped with a vintage Sailomat Aux Rudder wind vane which helped a great deal but was far undersized compared to the large rudder attached to Triteia’s full keel. The Windvane started to fail internally soon after the rudder failure. I was able to make a makeshift tiller handle that allowed me to turn the boat to get it back on course but the self steering started popping out of gear and stopped working completely while I crossed the channel between Molokai and Oahu forcing me to sit on the transom and hand steer for the last 6 hours of this intense passage.
If you would like to read the twice + daily blog posts I made during the crossing you can find those here: https://forecast.predictwind.c....om/tracking/display/
(update: Rudder Repaired May 2022 - https://youtube.com/playlist?l....ist=PLm0chdAnUTpx5UR )
MY SHORE TEAM!
A much needed shout out to my amazing Shore Team for this passage!
Some of you signed up by accidentally being related to me and the rest of you accidentally signed up because I love you, value your opinion and had your phone numbers.
David Frederick: My big brother and Executive Director of US Cyber Command for the NSA. David kept me safe with twice daily ship reports, checking on my mental health and used his army training to advise me about operating under fatigue and high stress.
Colby Thorp: My baby brother, a US marine and a padi certified search and rescue diver. Colby managed all of my accounts while I was away including the SOS email and secured a trailer for Triteia’s return trip. Thanks to his girlfriend Ashley for her help as well!
Sarah Koenig: A singer / Songwriter and One of my closet friends for the last 18 years. Sarah was only a message away with any questions I had, Google searches daily and kept my spirits up sharing all of the nice comments on Instagram and YouTube. She also looked into general delivery to Hawaii and called ahead to the Harbor Master in Oahu to confirm details for me.
Captain David Stovall: 200-Ton Masters Near Costal License Holder, Screen writer and a Texan so we are likely kinfolk. Stovall keep me updated with ships if I had questions while my brother was at work. He helped me work out the drogue steering and called BoatUS trying to get me a tow into port.
Captain Noah Peffer: 50-Ton Masters Near Costal License Holder, Professor of Nautical Sciences, Artist and dear friend. I hold Noah’s opinion as gospel and he has saved my ass on the last two passages. He is the one I bug when I am terrified.
I also want to thank my little brother Scott for checking on me, My oldest friend (since 3rd grade) Chance everything and My Buddy Dane for always being there.
I can never repay you guys and I don’t know what I would have done without you all!
Forever in your debt !

Season 5 - Episode 88 : Preparation and departure.
Welcome to Season 5 of our channel !
On this season we take you along with us on a yacht delivery we were hired to do helping take a 74ft power yacht from Seattle, Washington to Los Angeles, California. We are calling these "Yacht Delivery Chronicles" a series we will continue to make with future deliveries. This will give people a rare insight into what goes into a Yacht Delivery, both good and bad.
Our fearless leader (and old friend) Captain Dave Stovall was at the command ( https://www.instagram.com/captaindavestovall ) and the three of us had a wild ride.
There was an "Engineer" on board for the first week or so but the crew had a lot of conflict with him later on so we won't really focus on him.
On this first episode of the our new series we prepare the boat before departing on Seattles Lake Union and making our way through the Ballard Locks then on out into Puget Sound.
So give the episode a watch and see how things unfold.

Episode # 196 : A Change of Course
Hello Friends,
Here is the story of my ill fated attempt at solo sailing our 30ft sailboat Triteia to the Hawaiian Islands.
We had pushed hard to finally live land life behind and were 2 months behind our planned departure date due to parts shortages and unexpected complications with getting our new mast installed. Our original cruising plans were for James to sail solo to Hawaii then continue on to Alaska where Camille and Mister Steady would come on board. All of the delays and the advancing summer season gave us a very tight time window on making this dream come true. This resulted in not enough time to throughly sea trail the windvane....
After days of beating into 20-30 knot winds, my self steering Windvane began to work its self loose from the boat. The threads in the housing of the windvane itself failed which presented the possibility of losing the vane into the sea or WORSE possibly damage the transom of the boat due to the massive loads placed on this gear at sea. Impossible to fix underway I made the hard call and came about and abandoned my attempt for Hawaii.
Could I have lashed the windvane and continued on? Possibly yes but my concern was once I made it to Hawaii would I get stuck in Hawaii if the vane was not able to be repaired? I also had to consider there is no quick exit from Hawaii. It is 3 weeks or a month sail from Hawaii to anywhere on the West Coast of the North America.
I had not 1 but 2 electronic "Tiller Pilots" as a back up and for coastal cruising in light winds but these units are, strangely enough, Not waterproof and tend to burn out very easily. So I wasn't without redundancies but anyone who goes ocean sailing knows that a windvane is the most critical gear on the boat especially so for a solo sailor.
So as with all things sailing, one must be flexible and willing to change course when necessary.

Episode 403 : Season 13 : Sailing Indonesia
Hello Friends,
On this episode we make way for Wakatobi National Park and arrive to drop the hook in the very deep anchorage of Hoga Island. The snorkeling at Hoga Island was absolutely incredible! A steep cliff side of dense healthy coral, that would be mind blowing to dive on! The (small) fish life and coral in Indonesia is truly remarkable, It is what I assume the now mostly dead Great Barrier Reef was like in the 1970s.
Back on board Triteia we headed over to what looked like a pristine white beach, but when we arrived saw it was just like every other beach and shoreline in Indonesia; covered in plastic trash.
