In this episode we got yet another taste of boat life at it finest! We finally made the journey to Saline island off the coast of Carriacou, Grenada and it did not disappoint! We had sailed passed this island at least 5 times during our time in Grenada. Along the way around to Saline island Adam made a new friend in the most unlikely of places and was rewarded with a crash course in scavenging for conch and WoW did we hit the jackpot!

After a few weeks of waiting, we finally found a good weather window to sail to Madeira.
In preparation we went out for a shake out sail and to clean the hull however with strong winds approaching, getting back to the dock and typing up was a lot more challenging that we anticipated!
The next day and with the weather behind us, we decided to head off. We donned our new life jackets and outlined some rules of when we'd like to wear the vests that we thing are pretty reasonable!
And then finally, we untied the lines for the last time and left Ponta Delgada for what is likely to be a 4-5 day passage.

Finally the weather started cooperating and we had a good weather window for crossing the Atlantic to Horta in Azores!
After 2 days however, the journey deteriorated BADLY. Everything started falling apart… or OFF as the case may be. This was by far our worst sail ever as Adam and I struggled to keep calm and fix things one by one... not the best start to our crossing.

In this episode we have a mixed bag of boat life ups and downs. We celebrated Seans birthday as best we could whilst in a semi state of lockdown here in Grenada. We get a complete run around from Spice Island Marina chasing a package for the seconds consecutive week and Khiara goes on an emergency trip to the dentist after a toothache she had been grappling with takes a turn for the worst.

After having the boat on the hard for over a week, Adam gets offered to be crew in a local regatta so takes a break from boat work for the day.
After getting to the regatta he doesn't find a spot on a racing boat but does manage to make his way onto the official boat following the race and follows them around the island of Carriacou in Grenada.
The next day we get stuck into doing our last jobs in order to get us back in the water, namely painting the boat and wrapping up our new traveller.
Finally, the day arrives and we splash back in water with seemingly no problems!

In this episode of Sailing Millennial Falcon, we get stuck into some DIY Boat maintenance in the yard at spice island marina. The agenda for this haul out is to install (or re-install) our feathering propeller (the H5 Autoprop) from Bruntons which we initially attempt to install in the water at anchor in St Martin September last year. After some testing, we decided the installation was not correct and we switched back to our old propeller.
Day one of the yard we were off to a ripper start. In the first hour, we managed to get the old propeller removed with a Prop Puller I had bought from a trade tools store in Australia for 80$ (bargain!) and after a thorough pressure wash the hull bearly needed sanding for next coat of paint (Winning!).
Later that afternoon we headed over to meet our friends John and Tadji Kretschmer on their Kauffman 47 named Quetzal to conduct an interview entitled "The Wisdom of 300,000 Bluewater Miles - with John Kretschmer" Adam had arranged prior (stay tuned for that one). After a great evening we whisked ourselves off to the airport to collect some new crew who made the jump to Grenada to hide out with us whilst the COVID-19 chaos unfolds.
With a few extra hands we knocked over the sanding and painting of the hull and the propeller installation takes a nerve-wracking turn as Adam comes to the conclusion the propeller is in fact NOT key bound, as he previously suspected and he needs to cut our shaft to make the Bruntons H5 Auto prop fit.
Lastly, we get stuck into some Q&A and we give a quick update on the state of play on the Millennial Falcon and Grenada in general in these uncertain times.
Thanks for watching!

This episode we shake off the lines and continue our journey east towards beautiful La Parguera. Unfortunately for us 5 miles from our departure the wind picked up and our prop shaft decided to fall away from the engine!
We managed to limp our way into the bay of Boquerón, and with a little help from our friends we made it to anchor. After a few hours of work we managed to get the shaft reassembled (correctly this time!). The next morning we continued our journey with a short test run and a day later we made it to La Parguera without incident.

You may have noted that we’ve been a little off the grid lately, and we explain in this episode why that is the case…
In reality, we were having a sailors crisis… 😂
Well, not so much a crisis as a “what the hell do we do with ourselves now?” After hitting our goal of sailing the Atlantic.
We thought of many places to go and routes to get there and none of them seemed to sit right with us. Meanwhile, during our indecisiveness, the time on our Schengen visa has been counting down and we were running out of time to stay in Europe.
So we came up with a solution to hold the countdown on our visa while we muddled through our future plans. The solution? A trip to the UK to visit family!
With cheap flights however, come budget travel experiences and you might have a few laughs at our expense as we sleep on floors, get caught on wrong roads in a country that’s somewhat new to Adam, and eventually make our way home to visit family who we haven’t seen for years!
At the end of the episode, Adam shares that during our travel decision, he actually contacted the founder and CEO of Kraken Yachts, the most bluewater yacht we’ve seen on the market today.
The story of this yacht will slowly unfold in the coming episodes, so stay tuned!
* As the UK is a minefield for drone flying, we opted to use Storyblocks to get some drone footage of UK in this episode!

We haul the boat out in Carriacou, Grenada and finally get to see the damage that we caused when we hit 'something' in the muddy waters of the lock in Port Charlotte (see EP 3)... at the time, we rose about a foot out of the water and were petrified that we hit a manatee, but no manatee could have caused this!! It's certainly a bit worse than we thought...
After checking out the keel damage we then try and get to work with our other tasks of replacing our cutlass bearing, stuffing box and sanding and barnacle removal for a new coat of paint... the rain however has other plans!

Last month we pulled into a marina for 3 days to complete an ongoing rigging project to replace all of our stays. While in the marina, we installed all but one - the forestay.
It was finally time to install it and the best marina we could do it in was 25 miles north in Carriacou.
So we set off for a day sail and immediately got a whooping from some pretty hefty seas and strong winds. In the process of raising our canvas, we tore our staysail - Our first ripped sail of our journey so far and not surprising given its age.
Despite the wild weather and ripped sail we had a great journey and put a hook in in Tyrell Bay, Carriacou that afternoon.
The next day we inspected the tear after assessing that it was a bit beyond our skills we got it straight to a sailmaker to repair. The next task was the take off our Genoa in preparation for our marina time.

Only 3 days after finishing up our rigging we decided to give it a good test… a 360 mile test sail in fact in St Martin.
We were both very excited to undertake e a multi day passage and chose a longer passage mainly for this reason. Our other deciding factor during these uncertain times was finding a place that accepted visitors with minimal PCR tests required. St Martin ticked these box.
After checking out of Grenada, we got the boat ready to leave for a multi day passage.
We were a little rusty while hosting all sails, we got them set and settled in to enjoy the ride. Within our first 24 hours we saw a range of wind and sea states and our first night was a bit of an induction of fire.
Our first 24 hours saw us sailing over 140 miles and as the sun set the afternoon of the second day, we neared Domenica, in the middle of the island chain.

In this episode We say goodbye to our brief boat life interlude and prepare to commence operation yard life. The purpose of our haul out was to finally (re)install the new Bruntons feathering propeller and to do a quick hull paint job whilst the boat was out of the water.
We had a couple of huge days getting prepared to haul our boat out at Spice Island Marina in Prickly Bay, Grenada. But not before squeezing in a quick sail! - and we use the term loosely in this case!
Next on our list is a quick clean of the hull... in the rain. But afterwards we receive the welcome news that our family are coming to visit a little sooner than we planned... the NEXT DAY. With governments around the world cracking down on travel due to coronavirus, Adam's sister and brother in law very rapidly brought their flights forward so they could ride out the COVID-19 storm with us aboard the Millennial Falcon.
The next day we wake early and realise we have a mammoth day of hauling the boat, starting work in the yard, visiting John Kretchmer for an interview (soon to be released!) and then finally picking up our new visitors from the airport!

After our disastrous attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean a few years ago, it started to dawn on us that we were going to try it again… very soon.
We had officially arrived in Bermuda after a 6 days sail from St Martin, with LOTS of leaks, a few broken blocks and plenty of caulking to do in order to get us ready for a trip across the ocean again.
Being a little scarred from last time, we were trying to prepare for EVERY eventuality… including checking the propeller shaft, JUST in case it had moved! It was a massive sigh of relief that we confirmed that it had not moved and if something broke on this passage, it most likely wasn’t gong to be that.
It took us about a week of preparation to get us ready to go again. Now we just had to wait for a suitable weather window. So while we were waiting, we decided to rent a scooter and do a more thorough exploration of the island than we had done last time.
Our first and big stop of the journey was the beautiful beaches of Bermuda. Spotting HUGE fish, snorkeling and discoing little fairy ponds in the cliffs. It was such a gorgeous place that we ended up spending a lot longer here than planned and after ways had a late lunch at the oldest pub in Bermuda, the Swizzle Inn.
While we were there, we identified a pretty good window which we might have been able to cross in.

In this episode, we sail from Terciera to Sao Miguel in the Azores.
I (Khiara) decided to be captain for the day and as soon as we hoisted a sail, something went wrong!
After dealing with the issue in a very captainly manner, we then sailed the 90 mile stretch between the islands in beautiful but calming conditions.
We arrived in the morning and the next day set off to explore the island. Being a lover of rosy lee, our first stop was Cha Gorreana, (most likely) Europe's oldest and largest tea plantation.
From there we set off discovering lakes, bubbling hot springs and beautiful island views as well as some of it's amusing inhabitants!
A few day later, after finishing with the fun and frivolity of exploring a new island, we got down to some work... boat work! Which has been few and far between for the last few weeks so we actually kind of enjoyed doing it. We got to work installing a repaired radar that got delivered to the marina, and to see whether it finally worked and if we'd have radar capability in future!

We finally answer the big question: How much does it cost to go cruising?
We crunched the numbers from 2 years of our spending (from Jan 2018 to 1st Jan 2020) and broke down the costs of searching and buying our 1981 Tayana 42 (a blue water classic). We also detail our costs in refitting and upgrading the boat while sailing around the Caribbean.
We also go into detail on how much we spent over a 2 year period in everyday cruising costs such as our food and drink, fuel, mooring, and marina costs as well as checking into countries.
We compare our costs with some estimates from Beth Leonard (The Voyagers Handbook) and Annie Hill (Voyaging on a Small Income).
We hope that this video can help you budget for your own sailing adventure and see where most of our expenses lie.
00:47 - 2 years in review and why we waited
02:00 - How we got the numbers

04:22 - The cost of upgrades, refit and upkeep
08:04 - The cost of living

13:33 - Total of all expenses while cruising
14:02 - How did we measure up?
