Season 8 : Hawaiian Adventures : Episode #208
Hello Friends,
On this episode I join one of Captain Mike's snorkel tours off the coast of the world famous Waikiki Beach in Honolulu on Oahu.
You can book one of these tours here: https://www.cruisediamondhead.com
The boat we went out on, Maori Warrior II will always hold a special place in my heart as it was the boat that brought Triteia into a safe harbor after a very difficult passage! Thanks again to Mike and his crew for the tow and for taking me out on this wonderful day of snorkeling.

THE FALKEN SAGAS: An Epic Adventure with 59º North Sailing Along The Viking Route: Newfoundland to Greenland to Iceland.
Welcome to The Falken Sagas series. I left Triteia in her southern hemisphere’s winter berth in Whangarei, New Zealand and flew back to North America to meet up with Andy Schell and 59º North Sailing. Andy had invited me to join him on a high latitude adventure onboard their Farr 65, Falken, to sail the Viking Route from Newfoundland to Greenland, transit Prince Christian Sound and sail on to the West Fjords of Iceland across the North Atlantic. Along for this adventure was Andy’s First Mate Vilma and the crew of the Falken; Jim, Matt, Richa, Johnathan, Charlotte, Gavin, Alejandro & Nick.
I have made several long format films and video episodes documenting our journey and adventures. Starting with preparations in Newfoundland then our passage to Greenland, our time cruising in Southern Greenland and our passage to Iceland. All of the drone footage you see in the films was shot by Andy Schell, otherwise all the footage was filmed by myself on a gopro.
About 59º North:
ANDY SCHELL & MIA KARLSSON started 59º North to pursue their own passion for offshore sailing and to share it with other like-minded people out there who yearn to see what's over the horizon & learn about themselves in the process. We set an ambitious schedule, sailing 10,000 MILES PER YEAR making landfall in ports from the Caribbean to the Arctic, Bermuda, Europe, Cuba, Canada & more, with the world's oceans as our stomping ground. Since 2015 our team has grown to include some of our best friends and like-minded sailors – AUGUST SANDBERG, EMMA GARSCHAGEN, RYAN FINSTAD, LEE CUMBERLAND & RYAN ELLISON – all working together to pursue our passions.
In 2020 we started THE QUARTERDECK, a unique-to-sailing online membership platform where we dive deep on the art of seamanship. Members have direct access to us, we have a growing resource library of onboard checklists, SOPs, logbooks and more, and we’ve moved all of our LIVE sessions onto the platform for members only.
Since 2013 we’ve published weekly podcasts on sailing, and now have three distinct shows — ON THE WIND, the main interview show hosted by Andy Schell, August Sandberg , Nikki Henderson & Emma Garschagen; THE QUARTERDECK PODCAST, a more technical, companion show to our online platform; and SAILING STORIES, a unique, serialized podcast showcasing ‘tales from the high seas, told week by week.’ All of our podcasts are free, and always will be — available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
If you've dreamed of seeing STARS DOWN TO THE HORIZON, if you yearn to LOSE SIGHT OF LAND for days on end, if you want to UNPLUG from the world ashore and TRAVEL TO NEW LANDS at a human pace, then join us for the OFFSHORE SAILING ADVENTURE of a lifetime. We'll see you on the high seas. HOLD FAST!

Episode 342 : Season 10 : New Zealand - Aotearoa
Hello Friends,
On this episode I have a lovely slow sail across Port Fitzroy to the legendary Smokehouse Bay. I had heard a lot of hype about this spot and I have to say it far exceeded expectations. Where else can you sail up to an almost empty anchorage, drop the hook, head ashore and start a fire for a hot water bath, smoke fish and make a pizza in the pizza oven? Oh Yeah you can also do you your washing in the basins near the pizza oven.
This was a really remarkable place and easily one of the coolest cruising destinations I have ever visited.

Episode #201 : A very bucking bronco anchorage
Hello Friends,
On this episode we haul up at Little Fisherman's Cove and make way for Rippers Cove. It was a short motorsail of 4 miles and we had the anchorage all to ourselves. At first it looked very promising but soon the wind waves joined forces with the swell wrapping around the island making the anchorage very uncomfortable.
If the sea state was different this anchorage would be amazing!
As I mentioned in the episode if you would like to see a past episode about Little Fisherman's Cove you can view that here: https://youtu.be/19IxZVC4o9o

Episode 358 : Season 11 : The South Island of New Zealand - Aotearoa
Hello Friends,
On this episode we head ashore to smoke the fish Rhonda caught in our new Kiwi Sizzler smoker we had picked up in Picton. We used Al Brown's recipe for smoking the fish https://youtu.be/nwkQm-VINi8?si=UCEbyjgIaGXDea0V
After battling the wind, we finally got the job done and had some amazing smoked fish!

Episode #184 - How We Dropped Our Mast on SV Triteia
Hello Friends,
On this episode we show you how we de-stepped our mast on Triteia with just Camille, Myself and $30 worth of lumber. We have extensive professional experience at rigging large heavy objects and flying them through the air so this was a walk in the park.
THIS CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS AND DEADLY FOR ANYONE WITHOUT EXPERIENCE SO CONSULT A PROFESSIONAL IF YOU DO KNOW KNOW HOW TO SAFELY EXCUTE THIS PROCESS.
After the action footage I explain how WE did it and what you need to consider when stepping or dropping a mast using this technique.

Season 4 | Episode 60 | Exploring Little Harbor on Catalina Island
Hello Friends!
Coming in after dark we looked over the charts and sounded our way into 30ft of water and dropped the hook.
Sailing into an anchorage after dark is not advised but sometimes it is necessary and you just have to deal with it. We had both paper charts and digital charts and could see land masses for points of reference so we new we were anchored in a safe spot. Sailors have been anchoring in the dark for centuries but I feel the need to include this in the description because someone insulted me and questioned by seamanship because we anchored after dark, and its more than likely that that person as only ever gone day sailing and doesn't understand that when you are cruising sometimes you have to deal with situations that are not ideal, which is what we did, and we did it perfectly.
While the location we ended up anchoring in was safe it was not at all comfortable. We spent a very rolly night with a heavy swell rolling in but our anchor alarm never sounded and the hook held fast.
Upon first light and after a cup of coffee I hauled up the hook and we moved in closer to shore and behind the natural breakwater that makes Little Harbor such a wonderful anchorage. Finally dropping the hook with 9 ft of water under our keel.
This clear skies and a warm sun I took Camille out for her first ever snorkeling. As we both floated next to the boat Camille put her face in the water and pulled it right out and said "there are two massive rays below us"! The snorkeling was truly incredible and we got to see our first ever "Shovel nosed guitar fish" who circled back to give us a look.
After a full day of snorkeling and swimming we went ashore in search of Bison. Legend has it that a herd of Bison were brought to Catalina in the 1920s for a movie shoot and have remained there ever since.
We quickly found a pair and watched these mellow creatures for awhile.
Little Harbor ended up being the most amazing anchorage of the trip and editing this video for you all has made us want to go back RIGHT NOW!
Thanks to our Patrons, Your contributions help us get the boat in order to do big things!
Until Next Week,

Episode #197 : Hard Dodger Overview Video
Hello Friends,
I have had a lot of people ask me if I made a Build Video of our new Hard Dodger. I didn't film me making it but took tons of photos so I have sat down and made this episode to explain the process and show what images I have to help people understand how I went about making our custom hard dodger.
The best "How To" video I have seen for dodgers is on Free Range Sailing's youtube channel : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5wYICajlek - Their dodger is a different style than mine and I don't believe you can get the curves that I have with this process but they do a great job explaining how they made theirs.

Season 5 Episode 92 - Sailing from Port Townsend to Neah Bay
On this weeks episode we set off with high hopes of getting some sea miles behind us. The Auto pilot returned to its previous behavior and before long it was joined by an engine alarm as we began to beat into building seas near to Cape Flattery.
Oh yes and then there was the fun task of hand scooping out the bilge which was full of a mixture of diesel fuel and water making all of the sleeping quarters almost unbearable to be in due to the fumes....
The captain made the right call for us to turn back and head for the last safe port before the Cape: Neah Bay, Washington.

Episode #219 : Season 8 : The Hawaiian Adventures
Hello Friends,
On this episode I haul up anchor at Makua Anchorage and attempt to round Kaena Point and make my way up the North Shore before the winter sets in. With a strong current running and and the trade winds blowing steady I found the passage impossible and tucked tail and ran back into he lee of Oahu.
I pointed Triteia's bow for Electric Beach at Kahe Point dropping the anchor in 20ft of water and taking in the sights of this unusual anchorage. Electric Beach is known for its snorkeling with the large cold war era power plant on the beach pumping its hot water discharge offshore, which attracts fish and other sea life.
Shortly after diving in I was met by a 6 ft sandbar shark, this was my first (known) swimming with a shark and it was both exhilarating and nerve wracking. Once at the cooling pipes I found out the sharks species from a free diver and swam with two other sand bar sharks and a wide variety of fish.
Once back at Triteia I heard the calls of dolphins and had a treat of a lifetime when a pod of Spinner Dolphins swam below and and past me as I watched them play underwater.

On this episode we show you how to install a "Rope Clutch" on your mast. If you are not familiar with what a rope clutch does it is basically a one way channel / brake that allows you to pull the line through one side but it doesn't allow the line to travel in the opposite direction when engaged.
We installed a used Spinlock clutch we bought for $18 at Minney's Yacht Surplus for our mainsail halyard and to use when hoisting someone aloft as an added safety measure along with tying off to the cleat.
Thanks for watching !
Fair Winds,
James & Camille
