Episode #236 : Boat Projects : reNewable Galley

Hello Friends,

On this episode I introduced you guys to my new all electric galley! I up cycled my old alcohol stove and converted it into a super modern induction range / convection oven. I am very excited to be able to have all of my cooking fuel be renewable!

I will be doing a follow up video soon when I am done documenting the power usage of the first week.

SEASON 6 / The Haul Out : Episode #127 : SURPRISE COSTS OF HAULING OUT

Hello Friends,

On this episode we are "halfway" through the haul out... on the day we originally THOUGHT we would be splashing back into the water on. So this is 7 days into the haul out and we sit down to talk about the surprise costs we had experienced, expectations versus reality and the state of things.

This this video might only be interesting to sailors who are planning on hauling out or have suffered through the same (or all you sadists who are eating popcorn watching us suffer, hahaha) We are releasing two videos at the same time this week.

The other video uploaded today is of a big feast we had onboard our new friends John and Alanna of SV Felurian : https://youtu.be/CVaQNfTnWrM

Season 7 : Episode #173 : Our Last day at the Northern Channel Islands.

Hello Friends,

On this episode we haul up at Little Scorpion Anchorage after I work out why the engine would not start. John Conway of @svfelurian got some great drone shots of us weighing anchor in the fog of the morning.

We made a 10 nm passage to a secret surf spot that John frequents and me and John paddled out (the 1/2 mile paddle to the spot and back to Felurian had me hurting for days hahaha) Once I was back on board Camille went for a snorkel exploring the rocks in low visibility.

Once we were done with our lunch hook both boats hauled up and we headed for Yellowbanks where we were racing a fog bank to get anchored before it swallowed us up.

Make sure to check out John and Alanna's new youtube channel of their adventures around southern california - https://www.youtube.com/svfelurian

Episode #188 : Sea Trials Day 1 - The Passage

Hello Friends,

We have completed 99.9% of the refit with only a few things to finish up before the passage to Hawaii.

On this episode we take you along with us on a rocky passage to Catalina Island where we got to put the reefing system and new rig to the test in 17knot winds.

We changed course and pointed for Whites Landing on the front side of Catalina and anchored for the night.

Episode 347 : Season 10 : New Zealand - Aotearoa

Hello Friends,
On this episode I make the decision to head North instead of South and sail down the Westcoast of New Zealand for the South Island. Once my mind is made up, I make way across a now dead calm sea to Bon Accord Anchorage on Kawau Island.

I got a tip about a boatyard up the Mahurangi River that could haul me out so I could repaint Triteia's bottom with new Antifouling, so we headed up the tightest river we have ever driven up.

I had a really amazing experience at https://www.quaysideboatyard.com and highly advise anyone looking to get the bottom done to head to this amazing small family run boatyard.

Hello Friends,

This video is meant to be a guide to help anyone who is considering starting a sailing or boating channel to document their adventures or refit process. Much of what I discuss could apply to any other type of YouTube Vlog as well.

The video is rather long but I felt if someone is interested in this subject the information about how I started, my process, and the suggestions I make based on years of doing this might come in handy.

Here is a list of the gear we currently use for our channel:

- iPhone 6
- GoPro hero 7
- Scorpion Jr. Camera Rig
- RODE Video Micro Microphone (with wind sock)
- Two handed diving camera rig with super suit (for GoPro)
- DJI Mavic Pro - Alpine White
- Canon 60D (for some time-lapse and still photos)
- Sony PCM-D50 audio recorder (for Podcasts)
- Adjustable Arm with Clamp (for GoPro)
- 3 slot GoPro battery charger
- Old MacBook Pro (circa 2012)
- Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 (old)
- Adobe After Effects CS5.5 (old)
- Adobe Audition CS5.5 (for podcasts)
- Portable solid state G-Drives
& Any decent Dark Roast Coffee

If you have any further questions feel free to shoot me a message in the comments and I will do my best to answer them for you.

I hope some of you dreaming of starting a channel see this video and realize it is within your reach and give it a shot!

Until Next Time,

I am proud to announce that Triteia and myself are now ambassadors for RENOGY SOLAR!

When I was shopping for the initial solar set up for Triteia back in 2020 I decided to go with rigid Renogy Solar Panels. There were cheaper panels on the market but all of the reviews I had found for Renogy were positive and I wanted the best I could get.

Those 2 x 100 watt panels kept my old AGM battery bank topped up for over a year of never being plugged into shore power and were still working perfectly when Renogy contacted me about sponsoring us. After knowing and trusting their product I accepted and am proud to now represent Renogy.

Check out their website for your solar panel needs and have a look at all the other great products they offer.

Here is our affiliate link: (Buy shopping via this link you get Triteia paid a small kick back from any thing you purchase)

https://renogy.sjv.io/sailorjames

Thanks to the Team at Renogy for the sponsorship of the 2 200watt solar panels and the 3000w inverter! We are very happy to have twice the solar we had before to make sure our batteries stay topped up and happy.

——
Here is a PDF manual I put together that outlines how I went about building my adjustable solar panel setup : https://drive.google.com/file/....d/1AkX4KM26CaszmsVha

I built my original set up based on the set up on fellow YouTuber SV Ramble's set up ( https://youtu.be/r4GOOs0WxEs )

The only part not on that list is the awesome gate / elbows I used which came from here:

Season 4 | Episode 61 | Sailing to Cat Harbor

Hello Friends!
On This episode we bid farewell to Little Harbor and all its magic and enjoy a slow sail to Catalina Harbor.

Catalina Harbor, or Cat Harbor as its called by the locals, is part of the Isthmus and Two Harbors. On the side of the island facing the mainland is Isthmus Cove and on the southwestern side or backside of the island lays Cat Harbor. Only a mile of soil separates the two. Cat Harbor is the only true natural "Hurricane Hole" in Southern California and has been used for centuries by ships riding out sou'easters or as we know them today "The Santa Anas".

Coming in we experienced quite a venturi effect as the winds increased dramatically just inside the entrance to Cat Harbor forcing us to head back out and drop our mainsail.

We pick up a mooring ball for our stay and went ashore and had dinner before turning in for a quiet night on a mooring.

If you enjoy the videos and the podcast please consider becoming a Patron at as low as a dollar and episode. We need to update some of our video equipment to keep putting out quality videos and would b grateful for any nod you might be able to give.

Thanks to our Patrons who already support us!

Episode #176 : DOOMED YACHTS and New Life for Old Parts.....

We finally made it out to the high desert to the infamous Boat Junkyard. I will start off by saying I am not sure if this place still exists or not as this was filmed last in 2020 and there was talk that they would have to move.

I have had a number of friends who had visited this place and I was passed a phone number and name. There is no website for this junk yard, no email address, just word of mouth it seems. It is wonderfully dangerous and enter at your own risk. Something I think the world needs more of.

Basically they are hired to haul off doomed or abandoned boats, mostly sailboats, then they break the keels off and sell the ballast to a recycler and take a few parts off and sell them to local shops and possibly online. There are ENDLESS amounts of good parts still sitting on these boats.

I was told there is a $200 minimum to even be allowed to pull parts off of boats. I was very happy with what we ended up paying for the parts we got.

The Anchor Setup - Part 3 - The Lofrans Manual Windlass

This episode is a Throwback project video, one of many I will be uploading every couple of weeks. As I mentioned before I undertook a lot of major projects in preparation for the Channel Islands trip and I shot a ton of video.

In this video I drill out the holes for the bow roller and windlass, prep them and refill them with epoxy to seal the core.

I know many of my subscribers really enjoy the refit videos so I will be working these in over the next couple of months. I just couldn’t wait to share my adventure videos, as that is the entire reason I worked so hard on these projects to allow me the ability to sail and explore new places.

Thanks for watching!

The Anchor Setup - Part 4 - The Anchor Rode

This episode is a Throwback project video, one of many I will be uploading every couple of weeks. As I mentioned before I undertook a lot of major projects in preparation for the Channel Islands trip and I shot a ton of video.

In this video I splice my rope rode to my 3/8 bbb anchor chain then I measured out all of my rode, 80 feet of chain and 600 feet of rope, and marked every 20 feet with colored zip ties.

Then I started the process of stowing it all in my new anchor locker. It was quite a chore to do alone as the rope rode keep getting tangled up and required a lot to get it all in the locker and laid down.

I know many of my subscribers really enjoy the refit videos so I will be working these in over the next couple of months. I just couldn’t wait to share my adventure videos, as that is the entire reason I worked so hard on these projects to allow me the ability to sail and explore new places.

On this episode of Sailing Vessel Triteia I am tackling the old Yanmar 2gm20 diesel engine. The piston is seized in the sleeve/head so she has to come out. This episode is longer than most of my videos because there is a lot of footage and I myself like watching the process of such things so I included a lot of footage showing me figuring things out and doing boat yoga inside tight lazarettes to unhook the engine.

I hope you enjoy this episode and if you do please give it a “thumbs up”!

| Season 2 | Episode 18 |

Morse Point Anchorage to Forney Cove, Santa Cruz Island of the Channel Islands of California.

The last week of 2017 I took an amazing solo sailing trip to the Channel Islands. I visit six anchorages on Santa Cruz Island before sailing for Catalina Island and tying up in Isthmus Cove for New Years Eve and meeting up with Meital. We sailed back on New Years Day enjoying sunshine, great wind and thousands of dolphins.

I awoke in the very rolly anchorage of Morse Point and waste no time heading out to Forney Cove which is located on the western most point of the island. A glassy motorsail with only a light breeze on my bow finds me cruising into the very projected anchorage of Forney Cove.

I went ashore, hiked and explored and returned at sunset to get some amazing drone footage of this incredible anchorage.

While I was on my trip I started my first podcast and the first episode is up online now. The podcast is titled “A STERN VIEW” and is something of a cruising guide to anchorages and sailing destinations. Each episode is recorded on location and I cover everything I know about the anchorage from my research and experience at the anchorage.

I also kept a journal in my logbook and will be posting them as a blog with still photos. This will act as support to the A STERN VIEW podcast as will each new video episode that features the anchorage covered in the podcast episodes.

The journal and Podcast can be seen and heard here: http://svtriteia.com

On this episode of Sailing Vessel Triteia we take our first trip to Santa Catalina Island.

Catalina Island is one of California’s Channel Islands, lies southwest of Los Angeles. It's known for its wildlife, dive sites and Mt. Orizaba, its highest peak. The resort town of Two Harbors lies to the north. We sailed to Cherry Cove and then to Isthmus Cove. Catalina is a beautiful treasure of Southern California and lies just 21 nautical miles from the mainland. We enjoyed some snorkeling off the boat at Cherry Cove and had some dinghy adventures!
