Season 7 : Episode #144 : Adventures at Little Harbor
Hello Friends,
On this episode we go for a hike out to Rippers Point to see the beautiful view of Little Harbor and Shark Lagoon. On the walk out there a Catalina Conservancy worker stopped in his truck and told us of a small water fall near Cottonwood Beach that we should check out so we went on a mission to find it!
After locating the falls and amazing little lagoon / grotto we made our way down to the Cottonwood Beach for a snack. After seeing a large group of hikers didn't stay at the lagoon we hurried back to enjoy some skinny dipping in the freshwater.
Catalina has such a desert feel to it that this place felt like an oasis! Such an magical little spot. If you are ever at Little Harbor you really must visit this waterfall and lagoon.

Skinny Dipping for a Lost Sandal (AKA NAKED RECOVERY MISSION) and Sailing to Emerald Bay on Catalina
EPISODE #106 ; Preparations, Sandal Rescue Mission and the Passage to Emerald Bay
Hello Friends,
We are going to get back into some Adventure videos! (We will be posting the next part in the "Galley / ICE BOX" Saga next Friday)
On this weeks episode we prepare the boat for a dive trip to Emerald Bay on Catalina Island. Camille takes inventory of our provisions while I work on putting the Galley back together for the trip. We also test drive our new very small dinghy and enjoyed rowing around the marina.
Later than evening,,, after a few two many "beers on a boat" Camille lost her favorite sandal under the boat. I offered to get it for her but she insisted she would do it so I filmed and laughed.
The next day we had a very speedy passage to the island due to our freshly scrapped bottom and no swell and enjoyed a quiet day in the sunshine.

Hello Friends!
This is just a extra little video I made for my friends and family and I thought I would share it here as well. Last weekend I went to Catalina Island off the coast of Los Angeles to complete my scuba certification with my little brother Colby and my dive instructor Jimmy Shannon.
This is some of the gopro footage of the dives and from me snorkeling after the first two dives. Thanks to my brother Colby for taking most of this footage and for being my dive partner during the tests. Super thanks to Jimmy Shannon for teaching me how to dive!
My main reason for getting certified was to be able to work on the bottom of my own boat and clean it myself and of course to have the option of diving around the world during my circumnavigation.
Ever since I was a young boy and saw people diving on shipwrecks on TV I have wanted to scuba dive and I have finally gotten the to!
our regularly scheduled refit agony will still be up at the beginning of next week, this is just a fun extra video.
Fair Winds,
Sailor James

On this episode we start the installation of my new chart table and I introduce my first mate Camille to my YouTube family!
For all of you who follow me on instagram Camille is a familiar face but this is our first video together with many more coming in the future.
In this video we install the base of the chart table that I had made at home out of plywood and painted. Then we test out, cut and adjust the mock up top and face which we will use as templates for the laminated finish plywood I will be using for the actual desk top and face.
We also look at the cardboard templates for the back panel and switch panel that I will be cutting out of the same laminate plywood and I talk about the future layout of the new nav station !
Thanks for watching this project video I hope it helps you in some way.
Until next time,

Season 7 : Episode #171 : Recovering on Santa Cruz Island
Hello Friends,
On this weeks episode we take a "Day off" from the hard pace we had had the entire trip and just relaxed and recuperated after our misadventures on San Miguel Island.
Prisoners Harbor was just what the doctor ordered. It was like being anchored on a lake most of the time and even when the southerlies arrived they never blew more than 10 knots. We enjoyed the seals and birds in the anchorage and Camille when for a snorkel along the rocky shoreline.

Season 7 : Episode #170 : Dinghy Recon and Moving On
Hello Friends,
This episode was shot the day after our brush with death. We search for our lost dinghy and sole ride to shore. I was convinced I saw it onshore... but it turns out seals are the same shape and color as our dinghy when they lay in pairs.....
After searching for several miles we decided to make way for Santa Rosa Island to anchor at Beechers Bay but after feeling the winds increasing and checking the weather we pointed out bow for Prisoners Harbor on Santa Cruz Island.

Episode 360 : Season 11 : The South Island of New Zealand - Aotearoa
Hello Friends,
On this episode we make way for Greville Harbor on D'Urville Island. We were faced with a very tricky shallow pass that proved stressful but we made it through safely. Once in Millarm Bay we found a tight cove to anchor in and shore tied the stern to keep us safe and sound, tucked in close.
After the boat was set we enjoyed a swim in the warm waters of this protected harbor.

Hello Friends,
On this episode we travel back in time a bit to May of 2018 when I bought my "new to me" gimbaled alcohol stove then we snap back to the present time and get to work on designing and building the closure for the stove.
Triteia came with a fixed alcohol stove mounted in the galley. While alcohol is a much slower burning fuel than propane it has a couple of advantages. First and foremost its not explosive, this is my main reason for sticking with alcohol. The other main reason for me is that I am outfitting our boat to sail all around the world and I have seen a lot of videos of cruisers struggles to get propane in far flung places.
I finally found the time to get started on installing the oven so this episode shows my process of making a template and cutting the pieces out of plywood that will later be laminated, trimmed out in teak and installed in the galley.
I hope everyone is having a good winter catching up on boat projects like myself or at least catching up on reading sailing books while you wait for your sailing season to start!

SEASON 6 / The Haul Out : Episode #121 : MAD PROPS (and Expensive Props)
Hello Friends,
On this weeks episode we pull the prop off of our 1965 Alberg 30 Sailboat. It was a complete loss due to electrolytic corrosion. For any of you who are just tuning in to our channel, This boat sat at the dock for 6 years without moving and likely didn't have the bottom done for about a decade. This kind of neglect meant that who knows when the last time a zinc was put on the boat.
Once we hauled out the yard foreman Brad looked at the chip in the prop and pulled out his pocket knife and carved a piece of bronze off like it was cheese. He told me to pull it off and take it to Valley Prop in Ventura to find a replacement. He also told me to bring my gear ration information and all of my boat specs so Brian at Valley prop could tell me the correct pitch we would need for our boat.
We first checked the salvage shop down the street hoping to put off buying a new prop for a while as this was SOOOOO not in the budget for the haul out. All the used props looked to be in about the same condition so I took Brad's advice and went down to Valley Prop.
We got a new prop for $375 which wouldn't be a big deal if we were just buying the prop but with the growing mountain of expenses this haul out was creating it was an added stress to say the least.
I learned a ton at Valley prop and I am grateful they let me film the conversation so I could share it with all of you.

SEASON 6 / The Haul Out : Episode #129 : Fail, Success, Fail, Success, Learning how to and how not to paint topsides
Hello Friends,
On this episode we decided to paint the topsides while we are waiting for our custom stern tube to be made. I had bought topside paint online and the color name was "North Sea" the paint ended up looking like blue painters tape so the color was NOT what we were after. I was also unaware that you need to thin the paint up to 10 percent so our Test section, the stern, came out TERRIBLE. Super thick and drippy.
After Several successes and failures we finally got a nice coat of " Interlux - Dark Blue " that we were happy with. An now we know for the future how to get a nice paint job with the Roll and Tip method.

In June of 2016 I crewed on a Yacht delivery from Fajardo, Puerto Rico to the Outer Banks, North Carolina by way of Bermuda due to a storm that was bearing down on us. The Yacht was a 45' Dufour Sloop; S/V Cunning Plan.
Follow along our adventure from Puerto Del Rey Marina to Saint George's Bermuda and on to the Oregon Inlet and the Outerbanks, North Carolina. From Squalls to engine failure to a scrambled auto pilot we came across a have sunken dismasted sailing vessel dodged reefs in Bermuda and lost our rudder in the Oregon Inlet.

Episode 326 : Season 10 : New Zealand - Aotearoa
Hello Friends,
On this episode I drive Triteia up a very shallow river to get hauled out and her bottom cleaned. My friend Zhané came along as crew to help me out, something I was very grateful for. THANK YOU Zhané 🙏🏻
As we made our way up the winding Hatea river, making sure to stay near the marks as it shallowed to less than 5ft below the keel at one point. The next obstical was the draw bridge, which was been designed to look like a Māori fishhook! Once past the bridge safely we hauled out and got to work on the bottom which was well fouled after spending so much time in the Bay of Islands.

Season 7 : Episode #166 : Serious Sailing between Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands
Hello Friends,
On this weeks episode we start our day on the hook at Santa Cruz Island after a very rolly night in the anchorage of Morse Point.
We decided to do our first (non- emergency) sail off of anchor given there large open anchorage we were in and the good steady winds. We tied the first reef in the mainsail and Camille worked the boat towards the anchor, powering up the main then goin into irons so I could easily haul the the anchor as we would have if we had the motor on.
It went perfectly and was a lot of fun.
We instantly realized that we needed to tie our 2nd reef in as the boat was already over powered in the protected bay.
Once out into the channel we had a very lively and fun sail across the channel and tacking up the southern coast of Santa Rosa to the anchorage of Johnson's Lee

Ahoy Friends,
This week we start the process of installing a Whale Gusher Foot Pump. The first step in this process was to determine where it made sense to install, on my 1965 Alberg 30 I decided to recess it under the stove enclosure in the starboard stowage area.
I have an electric water pump onboard that works perfectly fine but I wanted to install a foot pump to help regulate how much fresh water is used. Later on during the final galley rebuild I will install a salt water hand pump at the sink allowing for easy washing with salt water then a quick rinse with fresh water when needed.
On this episode we cut out the hole for the pump, design a simple shelf type bracket that the foot pump is mounted to then dry fit it under the stove to see how she fits.
Next week we go drill the holes for the hoses and run all new hoses forward to the water tank.
Thanks to our Patrons for your continued support! The new GoPro we purchased with your contributions has made filming so much easier and more reliable on the boat.
Thanks to everyone for watching and if you like this episode please give us a "LIKE" and leave us a comment with any questions or just to say hi.

Episode #233 : Upgrading the battery bank on an Alberg 30.
Hello friends,
On this episode we got into the big lithium LiFePo4 conversion replacing the aging AGM led acid batteries with Dakota Lithium Batteries. I made previous video talking about our partnership with Dakota Lithium and outlining the benefits of Lithium that you can see here :
I replaced our 200ah AGMS with 400ah of Lithium in anticipation for the all electric galley conversion I am in the process of doing (that will be featured in a future episode).
I also cover how to make your own custom battery cables in this video using 4/0 cable, hydraulic crimpers and heat shrink.
