HAPPY NEW YEAR! At the end of season 1 we hulled out Aquarius in Trinidad and left off to visit family and friends: New York, Las Vegas, San Diego, Copenhagen and Lithuania. We came back to finish up some upgrades on Aquarius and get ready for season 2 sailing, which will be a lot! Also our friend Rokas joined us for a while and we take off to Grenada, where we celebrate the birthday and get ready for 3 day sail!.

Since South Africa was not an option for us anymore and it was a rainy season in Tanzania, we explored some options. One place stood out quite a lot - the airplane tickets cheap and it was kind of a good connection for us if we decide to go home to US for a while which was our plan anyways but a little later in the season. Turkey got our attention also because as we cross Red Sea and Suez Canal we will be in Mediterranean and we are planning to spend a good time in Turkey. In that case it would be goos idea to preview what awaits for us. So we did...

We are for a treat now - Isabelle’s favorite place in Indonesia - we get to visit Ubud - famous for their handcrafts markets and less noisy lifestyle compared to Kuta beach. We visit local Balinese shows, KACAK & fire show, take a bicycle tour, with a breathtaking rice terraces; The Sacred Monkey Forest and enjoy great & cheap massages and just chill.
Later we have to go to Denpasar to fix my computer and go to Kuta beach where fun continues.
Until it’s time to leave and we got bullied by Bali Ferry…

We sail from Langkawi to Phuket Thailand. The day after we check into Thailand we get our engine checked out by Volvo Penta mechanics, and they find several problems! The biggest issue was a few cracks in the heat exchanger! But, we also need a new turbo, and a few other small but expensive things!

Zivile heads back to Lithuania to get a new passport, and Dave arrives to visit while I hang out in Phuket! We did a lot of work while Zivile was away. Check out Tips on Tuesday!

We left Kupang without rally and our first anchorage Kroko is simply spectacular - 2 volcanos and impecable patch of sand where local boats keep coming back and forth. After spending there couple of days we take off island hopping - visiting small villages and bigger towns everywhere we go getting so much attention - everyone wants a selfie with you or at least a high-five! What an experience but I have to admit it's tuff to be in such a high demand :D
Nonetheless we have amazing time and heading to even more amazing destination. Well - 'nuff talking click on and see what you think ;)

We move on and finally reach Lombok. We arrive to Medana Bay Marina where is kind of special - we meet another 2 rallies: Sail 2 Indonesia and ARC rally. The latter is circumnavigating the world in less than 1.5 years and there we had a pleasure meeting Niobe - Amel 50 where we toured it.
Lombok Wildlife park was a really cool place where we get to meet local animals and interact with them.
We also stopped in Gili Air - small touristy island not far from main island.
Marina Del Ray - our last destination in Lombok and we felt a bit like myth-busters taking the journey south via Lombok strait.

Today we leave our anchorage next to James Bond Island, and after a shallow passage to the Gypsy Village. We are picked up by Arrun in his long-tail boat less than 10 minutes after setting the hook. And we were off for another Phang Nga Bay adventure. We would see 3000 year old wall paintings, the Guidos Cave, and after lunch we take a walk around the Gypsy Village. Now that was a full day of adventure!

We have only couple of weeks left before our passage to Bay of Aden - towards the Red Sea and Suez canal. And so much more to do and still so many places to sail…
This time we finally decided to replace cooling plate and compressor on our still original- 23 years old refrigerator.
Also we upgrading on Aquarius transducer for boat speed, temperature and depth. It is also a perfect time to test our SMACO S700. Very nice!

We keep island hopping via Vanuatu and as we leave our last anchorage in Epi we were hit by 50+ knots of wind and 5 meter seas… Weather forecasts were Max 20 knots… Oh well… We are lucky to withstand these conditions with no damage.
At least we made it on time to the last Land Diving / Nangol for this year – one of the most impressive things we’ve seen… Too bad one of the guys had unsuccessful landing but we were assured he was fine.
When we get to the Espiritu Santo, our crew left and we stayed to explore the island – diving SS President Coolidge – one of the most famous wreck dives and enjoy pristine beaches – Port Olry and Champagne Beach in Santo.
We are sad to leave Vanuatu, that gave us so many unforgettable experiences and take off to Papua New Guinea… Join us!

After our worst passage from New Zealand to Fiji we recover in Savusavu and start exploring Fiji islands - Paradise resort in Taveuni, crossing the International Date line, Viani Bay with world famous Rainbow Reef dive site, so many beautiful ocean creatures and not so beautiful sailing. After one of those we have to spend couple of days in capital city Suva repairing the damage.... Lots of going on... Join us!

We did a load pull test on the two Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries I bought from Lithium Valley, and they performed better than expected. After 1.3 years I did expect some amount of performance reduction, but none at all. They actually performed better than the specification.

This was the answer to one of the questions: I think most people that are interested in this video would be interested in the answer.

I graduated from University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Electrical Engineering. UT Austin is one of the top universities for engineering in the USA. I worked as an electrical engineer for for over 30 years. And, though I am not a power engineer, I understand a little bit about the movement of electrons in a wire.

Regarding what I was testing: I showed 2 main things - After the batteries were 16 months old they accepted a charge with low resistance. From 1:10AM until 14:20 or 2:20PM I charged the batteries at about 47 to 60 amps from a discharged state (starting voltage was 23.4V) as shown in the charging spreadsheet. This took 13 hours 10 minutes, and used 16.8KW hours. THUS - I put in 16.8KW Hours into the batteries.... The charging spread sheet is at 16:57

The next spreadsheet I put up was the discharge. I turned on the inverter and the AC unit which pulled between 30 to 42 amps off the batteries. So over a period of 17 hours 25 minutes the batteries were able to power the Inverter and AC unit using a total of 16.3KW hours of energy. So, in this experiment I lost only 500 watt hours of energy. That is simply AMAZING! The Discharge spread sheet is at 17:02

I know that my experiment was not perfect, but even if I was off 5%, these batteries are still Amazing.

The batteries that I had for the test were 2 x 300AH at 24V.... This batteries are specified to hold about 600AH x 26volts = 15.6KW hours. So, during the test, I pulled 16.3KW hours out of batteries. These batteries are 16 months old and were specified to hold about 15.6KW hours.

1) The batteries did not use a lot of energy to get the electrical energy into chemical potential energy. (Low resistance to put electrons into the battery)
2) I was able to USE almost 100-(500/16800) = 97% of the energy I put into the batteries.

16800 Total Watts I put into the batteries
16300 Total Watts I pulled out of the batteries
500 is the Watt hours lost (16800 - 16300)

These batteries are simply amazing. So, I bought the 3rd battery.

In this video we take a kayak expedition through Ko Hong before taking off for Khoa Ta Poo. You probably know Khoa Ta Poo by it's movie name... Jame Bond Island. We drop anchor close by, and dinghied the short distance to Khao Phing Kan. This is the island where the villain in the 1974 Bond flick, The Man With The Golden Gun, built his evil lair.

We tour the island and watch the sun set over Aquarius anchored near by. Then, we try to get back, but there is a surprise waiting underwater for us during our dinghy ride back to Aquarius.

We leave Nai Harn Beach and with our friends take off back to Krabi Boat Lagoon. Trip started normal and as soon as sun set the winds picked up and we were struggling to keep our time and course for the destination. Gradually it was getting worse and worse. We had to change the course and find another sheltered place to anchor.

After not an easy one 7 day passage via Indian Ocean from Seychelles we are finally in Africa mainland - Tanzania, Tanga. To say the least - it's quite different here.
We drop the hook next to Tanga Yachtclub and after completing all immigration, customs and other arrival formalities we explore around and a bit later take off to Pemba - an island 40 NM east of Tanga, right above the Zanzibar.
