Hello Friends!

This is a special episode where Camille and myself sit down with our friend and small boat sailing maniac Sam Holmes. This is recorded in almost a PODCAST style where we ask Sam a series of questions and talk about his solo sailing trip to Hawaii on his (former) 23 ft Ranger "SV SWEDISH FISH" earlier this year.

We talk about his future plans, our future plans, life and of course about sailing.

I will likely be uploading this in audio form sometime next week to A STERN VIEW PODCAST but for now you can listen and watch here.

Hello Friends,
On this episode we haul up the the Cavalli Islands and make way for Whangaroa Harbour. After a lovely downwind sail we came into the narrow cut that protects the large harbor from the open sea and were amazed at its beauty.

Episode 356 : Season 11 : The South Island of New Zealand - Aotearoa

Hello Friends,
On this episode we leave Havelock and make way for the remote anchorage of Chance Bay on the advice of our new friends Nigel and Dale of SY Keiren. We were happy to find the anchorage offered shallower depths than most in the Sounds and really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful bay.

The VIDA MIA is a legendary wooden motor yacht that has recently been restored and is taken guests out on the water to take in the views of the beautiful coast of Waikiki.

Too find out about getting on one of the morning coffee cruising, Live Music at Sunset Cruises or a Private Snorkel Charter please visit:

https://www.thevidamia.com

You can also find and follow them on their social media accounts at:
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/vidamiahawaii
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thevidamia
Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channe....l/UCYJjhwe1FQwjm1Dj7

From the website:
Built-in 1929 and recently restored to her original elegance, Vida Mia has been host to intimate affairs, bustling parties, and unforgettable moments on the water for decades.

The worldly 61-foot wooden yacht has traveled the California coastline and crossed the ocean to Hawai‘i, where she currently resides at the private Waikiki Yacht Club. If her teak could speak, it would tell stories of celebrities like Louis Vuitton, Elizabeth Taylor, and the Travoltas sipping champagne in the lee of Diamond Head.

Built for luxury, the Vida Mia served her country during World War II, when she was commandeered by the Coast Guard to patrol the San Francisco Bay. She arrived in Hawai‘i after serving as an unofficial escort of the famed Transpac sailing race in 1963, although it’s said perhaps the Transpac racing fleet was really escorting her.

“Vida Mia” translates to “my life,” a term of endearment in Spanish, and is the perfect venue for a romantic evening for two or an intimate wedding, or the private charter of your choice.

On this episode I join the crew of SY RaLa, Ian and Laura, for a hike up to the former tunnels and bunkers of Stoney Batter at Man-o-war Bay on Waiheke.

It was fascinating to explore this massive military site and to hear its history. More info can be found here: https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-....and-recreation/place

Episode #268 : Season 9 : The South Pacific

Hello Friends,
On this weeks episode I head out to watch one of the biggest surf competitions in the world, The Outerknown Tahiti Pro at Teahupo'o. I was invited to head out to the end of the road in Tahiti with a fellow sailor and cinematographer, Nate P Meyer ( www.instagram.com/natepmeyer ) Nate flew in from Montana to film and Competition so I tagged along and we headed out on the water on a taxi boat sitting right at the surf break.

I am not overly knowledgable about professional surfing but I have of course heard of Kelly Slater and it was incredible to watch him surf so close by. https://www.worldsurfleague.co....m/events/2022/ct/11/

We also ended up making some new friends, Jay West and Hunter Paris. (You will see another adventure me and Jay got into on Moorea)

This was easily one of the most amazing experiences of my life, If you ever had the chance to go out on a boat (WITH A HIGHLY SKILLED CAPTAIN) to see a surf break like this up close and personal, make sure you DO IT!!!! I want to thank https://www.teahupooadventure.com for an amazing and safe day on the water! If you go to Tahiti hit them up and book a day on the water (and no I did not get a free trip in exchange of promoting them, I paid full price and would gladly do it again!)

Hello Friends,

We have another small series of Projects for y'all. This time we are designing and building out the new Navigation Station on SV Triteia. As I mention in the video this project took me FOREVER to complete. I ended up making 3 different complete switch panel / housings before I finally made one I was really happy with.

The main factor in the whole process was that I was also designing and building out my Chart Table ( https://youtu.be/mAUi2lt6kqA )at the same time and the final Chart Table design directly affected what was possible with the switch panels. Also early on I tried to make the Chart Table top and panel faces out of a variety of different wood/surface treatments; Stained Marine Ply, Hardboard, Europly before I ended up just making everything out of high quality Baltic Birch and laminating it with white durable formica.

This video is a little spotty in the fact that while I was finalizing the switch panels I was going full throttle on my Stove Enclosure build out ( https://youtu.be/Bw_tRFfVJ30 ) and I was so frustrated with the switch panels and focused on building and filming the Stove Enclosure that I didn't video all aspects of Nav Station construction.

I did however film a TON of footage of the actually installation of the panels and all of their instruments on the boat. So this first video is just a collection of some of the footage of the lay out design and cutting out the aft panel and trimming the formica.

In the next episode we get into the real fun of the project!

Fair Winds,
Sailor James

Season 5 - Episode 90 : Exploring Port Townsend

On this weeks episode we explore Port Townsend a little while trying to get the Garmin Autopilot problems worked out. The boat yards in Port Townsend were incredible! The captain downloads the update and we go out to try and get the calibration squared away.

After which Camille found a good brewery for the crew to try out (The next "Beers on a Boat" episode will feature a review of beer she brought back from Port Townsend)

(Originally Published August 2014)

33.76116° N , 118.19073° W - 74° F - 16:30

On August 20th we set out to test the drawing machine aboard the 34’ sailboat Sea Dragon captained by Taylor Zepeda. Leaving port in Long Beach Harbor we made our way out past the breakwater into the open ocean.

During the trip I created 3 test drawings of the drawing machine Drawn At Sea.

The first test – Blue (16:30-17:30) began on the table in the cabin, level with the waters surface and the calmness the harbor provided resulted in very little movement of the drawing tray. After relocating the machine to the stern of the ship sitting just behind the till more motion was recorded.

The second test – Red (17:30-18:30) drawing was done out on the open sea floating and bobbing under no power with the drawing machine placed just fore of the mast. This resulted in the most dramatic drawing as the ocean tossed us between its waves. The waters fairly calm but rolling enough to keep the machine in motion.

The third test – Black (18:30-20:00) drawing was done returning from the open sea under sail power. Sailing with only the Jib we cruised at about 5 knots tacking through the bay making our way back to port. Under sail the boat glided across the surface stable and strong, this created the quietest drawing of the set sending the tray in motion as we tacked. The sun was setting and small racing sailboats competed to the south of us as we slowed with the calming breeze and floated into the harbor and finally to dock.

Episode 408 : Season 13 : Sailing Indonesia

Hello Friends,
On this episode we make way for Bonerate Island. After a hellish night under anchor we head ashore to visit the our reason for stopping at this island; Massive Traditional wooden boats being built along the beach.

I love the homemade and handmade aspects of so many of the boats in Indonesia, as well as the beautifully crafted ships made by skilled shipwrights using skills passed down for centuries.

YACHT DELIVERY CHRONICLES : "Sorisa" a 1983 Cape Dory 28

Welcome to another episode of Yacht Delivery Chronicles.

On this episode I was hired by two of our Patrons, Kevin and Clara, to help them move their new boat from Oxnard, California to Dana Point, California. The total distanced covered in the delivery was 90nm and it took us 18 hours motorsailing with following seas (with some night sailing without the sound of the engine thrown in for fun)

We crossed paths with a megapod of thousands of charging dolphins, many of whom took a minute to play on our bow before getting back into the masses.

On the midnight watch we sailed into a massive crowded big ship anchorage that was obscured by a thick blanket of fog. Currently there are 30+ cargo ships under anchor due to a back up at the Los Angeles Harbor and we would have had to slow our process to a crawl if the boat didn't have a working radar.

We got into Dana Point and to Sonrisa's new slip safe and sound where Clara was waiting with coffee in hand.

I have very happy for Kevin and Clara and look forward to following along with all of their future adventures on instagram.

Hellooo! Oh how I miss going to a taproom!
This episode of beers on a boat, from when we were in Ventura in December, brought back so many memories! Here John and I are taking advantage of a little downtime to test the local goods. Spectro Hazy IPA from Topa Topa Brewing Company was a delightful fluffy brew that got us talking a lot about different beers, as well as beer pairings with food. Thank you for having us on you boat John, you're an impeccable host and also very natural on camera, made my job easy! Can't wait for more beers all together this summer at the islands!
Would love to have more guests on too, it makes for a really fun review.
If you're in SoCal I can't recommend TopaTopa enough.
Hope y'all enjoy this one, let me know what you think.

Hello Friends,

This weeks episode is broken up into TWO parts. The First Part is Camille and Mister Steady's hike on the Trans-Catalina Trail from Little Harbor to the Isthmus. The Second Part is James' slow sail from Little Harbor to Catalina Harbor. (Part 2: https://youtu.be/HNAFS0RoljU )

On Part 1 Camille and Steady take on the Trans-Catalina Trail hiking 8 miles up and over. The hike takes them along cliff edges, through clouds and off road to avoid a large heard of bison that were sleeping on the trail.

EPISODE #112 ; A Peaceful Sail Home... (Also, Camille parks the Boat for the first time!)

Hello Friends,
On this weeks episode we leave Emerald Bay and head back home. As soon as we leave the anchorage we are met with 12 - 15 knot winds and happily sail hard until they give out a mile or so off shore. The winds turned out to be an offshore breeze created by the island but it was fun while it lasted.

We enjoyed a lovely warm sail home just enjoying the water and the weather and as the afternoon approached winds came up to between 8 - 10 and we had a wonderful sail home.

During this trip Camille did her beer review for Propolis Brewing "Oceanna" that we published during Season 3's Yacht Delivery Chronicles.

You can see her full review here: https://youtu.be/JloPrgzonHY

The other fun highlight of this trip was as we came in to the marina Camille parked the boat for the first time ever and did a FANTASTIC job! I talked her through the process since the hardest part of parking a boat is not knowing how the vessel handles / turning radius in small spaces. She did great and is excellent at driving boats!

We also have an new episode of A STERN VIEW PODCAST up online for Emerald Bay. You can find that wherever you get your podcasts from!

Episode #290 : Season 9 : The South Pacific

Hello Friends,
On this episode I depart Savusavu at midnight and make way for the former leper colony island of Makogai Island. Makogai is now under the care of the Marine Fisheries department and is where they grow all of the coral for the Fijian Islands as well as growing the endangered Giant Clams. They also use the facilities as a nursery for sea turtles when they are hatching.

I have an amazing visit with the only two occupants of island, Pau and Mary. Heard about there life there and got a tour of the grounds.

Episode 406 : Season 13 : Sailing Indonesia

Hello Friends,
On this episode we make way across the Banda Sea for Taka Bonerate National Park. Our first stop was to anchor inside a completely submerged atoll, which can be a stressful experience with no visual reference to the dangers below the water and having to use charts we know are wrong, trusting only the soundings of sailors that came before us and satellite images.

Here is the contact info for Andi : https://www.instagram.com/andi....ni.claudia?igsh=NTc4

We made it in without any issues and dropped the hook in this other worldly anchorage.
