It was not the first time that the first officer followed his boss's instructions to shorten the prescribed detour around the expansive panorama reef. The ferry came from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. The majority of the passengers were Mecca pilgrims and Egyptian migrant workers on home leave. The next morning they were to continue to Suez, and the earlier they got to Safaga, the more sleep the crew would get. The wreck now lies virtually untouched on the seabed. Offizier befolgte nicht zum ersten Mal die Anweisung seines Chefs, den vorgeschriebenen Umweg um das ausladende Panorama-Riff abzukürzen. Die Fähre kam aus Dschidda in Saudi-Arabien. Die Mehrheit der Passagiere waren Mekka-Pilger und ägyptische Gastarbeiter auf Heimaturlaub. Am nächsten Morgen sollte es weiter nach Sues gehen, und je früher man in Safaga ankam, umso mehr Schlaf würde die Mannschaft bekommen.
