EP 16: Sailboat Restoration: Not all Shaft Seals are created equal! Tides Marine, Glides Marine, PYI

Thank you all for your comments. ------------------------------------------------- I never really worried too much about the shaft seal until I realized I had a PYI Dripless Shaft Seal on Reverie, our 1985 Pearson 34 sailboat. I was cleaning behind the engine and I bumped it and water came in. At first I was concerned, but it sealed right away on its own. So decided to learn more about it. This video shares what I learned. It also has a presentation by Pablo Soto of General Propeller where he explains the difference between the Tides Marine shaft seals, the Glide Bearing Shaft Seals, the PYI Shaft Seals. I then explained the rationale for our selection of a shaft seal for Reverie. There are things you should consider such as the location of your stern tube, the outer diameter of your stern tube, the diameter of your shaft and the distance between your shaft coupler and the edge of the stern tube.
