Chuuk - "Japan's Pearl Harbor". The Madness of War.

Chuuk Lagoon (previously Truk Atoll). Chuuk was the Empire of Japan's main naval base in the South Pacific theatre during World War II. It was the site of a major U.S. attack during Operation Hailstone in February 1944 Cargo ships, battleships, tanker, submarine, bombers, fighters, tank, torpedoes, ammunition, gas masks, rifles? all this and more in the embrace of the sea. The brutality of war is revealed when diving into this endless graveyard of ships. Our group completed 7½ diving days, 30 dives and almost twenty wrecks. It is comforting to see that the marine life is taking over and almost all the external structures of the ships now serve as anchorage and growth platforms for corals. And what corals and colors!
