The Voyage of Sea Swan, 1972. This boat was built mostly on the Patchogue River by Arnie Cortner and his wife, BettyLou. He started with a stand of trees that had been cut down by a developer and built a 46 ft-long schooner to his own design. When it was finished, after 8 years, Captain Forsyth volunteered to navigate from Long Island to St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. The voyage took nearly a month, when we left in early November it was snowing. This was originally shot on VHS and later edited onto a DVD with narration. After a refreshing couple of weeks with Jackson's parents in the Balearic Islands, and a few days land-based at Xanthe's parents' house in Cabo de Palos (Spain), we were back into boat life full throttle. Two months to go until we cross the Atlantic with the ARC Rally means preparations are ramped up. We spend a week in Almerimar in the South of Spain taking advantage of the fantastic chandleries and yacht services to convert Finding Avalon into the Bluewater cruiser she's always dreamed of being. We did the following: ~ Garnered all the necessary safety gear ~ Replaced the standing rigging ~ Installed a second set of navigation lights ~ Set up the sat phone system ~ Provisioned all the dry goods for the Atlantic crossing ~ Installed a saltwater pump ...Almerimar seemed nice from afar! Oh yes, and apologies for the fart noises in some of the voiceovers. I was pressed for time and had to record them in a marina with extremely squeaky ropes - I swear! Thanks for watching guys. Fiona’s Greenland Saga, ( Chapter 8 ). This was a summer cruise made in 2008. The plan was to explore the Greenland west coast and Davis Straight in preparation for a possible transit of the Northwest Passage, which we did pull off in 2009 to 2010. We switched crew in the Azores but one of the new crew became ill and we diverted to Newfoundland so she could get medical attention. Ein interessantes Charterrevier, Delphine, Wale, üppige Vegetation. Die Azoren sind wirklich immer noch ein Geheimtipp für Charterkunden. Segeln bedeutet für viele von uns vor allem eins: Freiheit! Das ist das Gefühl, welches wir an Bord verspüren, wenn der Wind in die Segel bläst und die Yacht sich durch das Wasser bewegt. Wir träumen vor allem von Revieren, die Ihre Natürlichkeit behalten haben, die eine üppige Vegetation zeigen, eine große Artenvielfalt und Naturschönheit vorweisen können und am besten – nicht überlaufen sind! Und genau das bieten die Azoren. Gerade mal viereinhalb Stunden Flugzeit von Frankfurt entfernt. Insgesamt haben die Azoren eine Größe von rund 2300 km². Die größte und somit auch gleichzeitig die Hauptinsel ist Sao Miguel, mit einer Größe von rund 750 km². Hier leben dann auch rund 140 der insgesamt circa 246.000 Einwohner der Azoren. Die Inseln selbst werden nochmal in drei verschiedene Untergruppen aufgeteilt. Die Ost-, die Zentral- und die Westgruppe. Zur Ostgruppe gehören Santa Maria und die Hauptinsel Sao Miguel. Die Zentralgruppe ist die größte Gruppe mit Terceira, Graciosa, Sao Jorge, Pico und Faial. Übrig bleibt dann noch die Westgruppe, in der sich die wunderschöne Insel Flores und Corvo befinden. Ein absolutes Highlight dieser Region bietet sicherlich die wunderschöne Stadt Dubrovnik, die auch Ausgangshafen für viele Charteryachten bildet. Die Stadt ist ein geschichtsträchtiger Ort. Und das spürt man förmlich in jeder der einzelnen Gassen. Nicht umsonst wird Dubrovnik heute oft als das kulturelle Zentrum Kroatiens bezeichnet. Wer von Dubrovnik aus chartert, hat die Möglichkeit nach Norden zu segeln und die Inseln Mljet, Korcula, Hvar, Vis oder Brac anzusteuern. Den Ausgangshafen Split könnte man als nördlichen Ausgangspunkt für dieses Revier bezeichnen. In Split werden weitaus mehr Charteryachten als in Dubrovnik angeboten und dazu hat man noch die Möglichkeit bei einem einwöchigen Törn statt nach Süddalmatien, nach Norden in die Kornaten zu segeln. Wer jedoch weiter südlich, wie zum Beispiel in Dubrovnik startet hat dafür einen anderen Vorteil. Im Süden Kroatiens trifft man auf weitaus weniger Chartersegler, wie in den Kornaten. Ein weiterer Grund, der viele Kunden Ihre Yachtcharter von Dubrovnik aus starten lässt, ist die Möglichkeit, einen Abstecher nach Montenegro zu unternehmen. Das Land im Süden Kroatiens ist quasi nur ein Katzensprung von Dubrovnik aus entfernt und bietet gerade für die Kunden, die Kroatien schon in- und auswendig kennen, eine echte Alternative. Obwohl die meisten Charteryachten ab Dubrovnik und Umgebung eine Lizenz für die Überfahrt nach Montenegro haben, empfiehlt es sich, noch bei der Anfrage zu erwähnen, dass man nach Montenegro einreisen möchte. Denn dann können wir als Agentur von vorn herein sicherstellen, dass die angebotenen Yachten auch für eine Überfahrt lizenziert sind.
