The yellow stingray (Urobatis jamaicensis) is a species of stingray in the family Urotrygonidae, found in the tropical western Atlantic Ocean from North Carolina to Trinidad. This bottom-dwelling species inhabits sandy, muddy, or seagrass bottoms in shallow inshore waters, commonly near coral reefs. Reaching no more than 36 cm (14 in) across, the yellow stingray has a round pectoral fin disc and a short tail with a well-developed caudal fin. It has a highly variable but distinctive dorsal color pattern consisting of either light-on-dark or dark-on-light reticulations forming spots and blotches, and can rapidly change the tonality of this coloration to improve its camouflage. Relatively sedentary during the day, the yellow stingray feeds on small invertebrates and bony fishes. When hunting it may undulate its disc to uncover buried prey, or lift the front of its disc to form a "cave" attractive to shelter-seeking organisms. This species is aplacental viviparous, meaning that the developing embryos are sustained initially by yolk and later by histotroph ("uterine milk"). Females bear two litters of up to seven young per year in seagrass, following a gestation period of 5–6 months. Though innocuous towards humans, the yellow stingray can inflict a painful injury with its venomous tail spine. This species is taken as bycatch by commercial fisheries and collected for the aquarium trade; it may also be negatively affected by habitat degradation. Nevertheless, it remains common and widespread, which has led the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to list it under Least Concern.

► Discover our full test in Multihulls World N°199: https://www.multihulls-world.com/review/trimaran/rapido-53xs-a-trimaran-that-competes-with-catamarans ► A pleasant surprise: the first competitor to the Neel formula (three hulls topped by a large nacelle) has been presented at the Cannes Yachting Festival. The Rapido 53XS takes the Morrelli & Melvin hull design of the “classic” 50, using a fixed structure (i.e. not foldable) with an added 1,760 lbs (800 kg) of extra superstructure. The aim of offering a large saloon, 3 comfortable cabins and two bathrooms has been perfectly achieved: the difference in volume between the 50 and the 53XS is striking. The manufacturer could have stuck to this concession to comfort... but no, the appendages have also been completely revised. The draft of the appendages has been calculated so as not to exceed that of the central hull. We’ve organized for a test sail of this new trimaran just after the show. ► Builder: Rapido Trimarans Hull length: 52’10” (16.1 m) Beam: 34’ (10.36 m) Draft: 2.2’ (0.67 m)/12’11” (3.94 m) Light displacement: 20,613lbs (9.35 t) Air draft: 85’ (25.86 m) Mainsail: 1,259 sq ft (117 m²) Solent: 786 sq ft (73 m²) Stay-sail: 268 sq ft (25 m²) Gennaker: 1,615 sq ft (150 m²) Spinnaker: 2,476 sq ft (230 m²) ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 500 multihulls tests!
