GPS works by measuring distance from satellites. Each GPS satellite continuously broadcasts a precisely timed signal along with information about its position in space. Your receiver compares when that signal was sent with when it arrived, which lets it estimate how far away the satellite is. With distances from multiple satellites, the receiver can narrow down your position on Earth. Three satellites provide the basic geometry for position, while a fourth helps correct the tiny timing error in the receiver’s clock, which is critical because even a very small timing mistake can create a large position error. The receiver repeats this calculation constantly. By comparing one position with the next, it can also determine your speed and direction of travel. So GPS is essentially doing the same thing over and over: measuring signal travel time, calculating distance, and using those distances to solve your position. #sailing #gps #sea #ocean #boat
