Day 11. Pretty exhausting day. The night started gusty, and we ended up hand steering most of it just to keep the boat going downwind. At some point we managed to adjust the sails and get things a bit more balanced, which helped a lot. In the morning, we set up wing on wing and decided to try a warp line to stabilize the boat. We used about 100 feet of line, a chain, and a fender… and it actually made a big difference. The boat settled down a lot more, which was a relief. Later, the wind shifted, so we had to change things up again and kept adapting as the day went on. It’s been a rough one. Five meter waves have been pretty normal, and we’ve been soaked more times than I can count from waves crashing over. Most of the day we’ve been sitting on the floor to eat, because it’s the only place that feels stable. But… we’ve also been flying. We hit a new speed record, averaging around 7 knots for most of the day, which is pretty wild. So yes, fun to go fast. But also very tiring. I won’t mind if it calms down a bit tomorrow. 🌊 ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. Angel, an 83’ Custom design by Langan Design Partners and built by Yachting Developments, New Zealand, was launched last week. Was rigged and is now on her way south for the winter! Angel has visited Lyman-Morse over the last few years for routine maintenance before heading to the Caribbean during the winters.
The crew on the J109 Going to Red showed how clockwork crew work keeps up your boat speed as you change sails and round a mark. Coming into race the top mark of race 3 of the annual narrows regatta on Strangford Lough the team was overlayed with the kite setup on the wrong side of a gybe set. The team recovered with some clockwork crew work which turned out to be faster than a gybe set. The team did a lightening set on the approach to the mark, quickly getting the jib down and setting up for a gybe where they only lost the kite for a couple of second. The exceptional crew work allowed the team to stretch out their lead going ton to tack the victory and the overall series. The team at bottom up boats hope you are enjoying these quick clips from the 2024 racing season with the days getting longer it will not be too long until the boats is back in the water so we can start making more memories as part of the 2025 season.
