Why can’t you drink Seawater? Seawater contains about 35 grams of salt per liter. Your body fluids contain salt too — but seawater is roughly four times saltier. And the water in seawater is usable. The problem is what comes with it. When you drink seawater, your body absorbs both the water and an enormous load of salt. That salt raises the sodium concentration in your blood. Through osmosis, water moves out of your cells and into the saltier fluid around them. The cells begin to shrink and stop functioning normally — and brain cells are particularly sensitive to this. At the same time, your kidneys try to remove the excess salt. But your kidneys can’t make urine as salty as seawater. So to flush out all that salt, they have to use more water. That means eliminating the salt can cost your body more water than the seawater gave you. Now you’re thirstier than before — but every additional drink of seawater adds another load of salt. The cycle accelerates. Eventually, severe hypernatremia and dehydration can cause confusion, seizures, organ failure, and death. So seawater contains plenty of water. Your body just can’t afford the salt that comes with it. #sailing #sea #ocean #boat #boating
