Who invented “Mayday”? In 1923, Frederick Stanley Mockford, a senior radio officer at Croydon Airport in London, was asked to come up with a spoken distress signal that would be easy to understand over radio. At the time, much of Croydon’s air traffic traveled between London and Paris. Mockford drew inspiration from the French expression meaning “help me,” which led to the word “Mayday.” It worked because it was short, distinctive, and difficult to confuse over a weak or noisy radio transmission. More than a century later, “Mayday” is still the internationally recognized voice distress call used in aviation and at sea. #sailing #history #boating #sailor

Marine radar is one of the most useful tools onboard because it can detect things long before you can clearly see them. Radar stands for Radio Detection and Ranging. It works by sending out pulses of radio energy and measuring the echoes that bounce back from objects around the boat. Because those signals travel at the speed of light, the radar can calculate how far away a target is from the time it takes for the echo to return. As the radar antenna rotates, it also determines the bearing of that return, allowing the display to show where vessels, land, navigation marks, and even areas of heavy rain are relative to your boat. That becomes especially valuable at night, in fog, in rain, or whenever visibility is poor. With practice, radar can also help you track other vessels and judge whether a target may present a collision risk. But radar does not replace what is happening outside the boat. The Navigation Rules still require a proper lookout by sight and hearing, as well as by all available means. #sailing #sailingschool #sailboat #ship #sea
