I was at Catalina Harbor on the "Hawaii side" of Catalina Island about 25 miles off the coast from Los Angeles. As I walked towards the Pacific, the fog started to roll in off the ocean. It rolled past "the pregnant lady" ridge and up the canyon on the opposite side of the harbor. A very beautiful but eerie sit sight. The long anticipated premier of the first two MC31s to hit the water played out in today’s passage race between Melbourne and Geelong for the start of the Geelong Festival of Sails. With John Taylor’s Vindaloo and Rohan Veal’s 38 South Racing sailing their respective boats quite literally ‘straight out of the box’ – Rohan’s sails arrived in Melbourne this morning – both skippers were delighted with their first outing, and are looking forward to using their kites tomorrow, after an upwind race today.

Ira was taking photos from the back of a local powerboat for the finishers of the Pacific Cup (the fun race to Hawaii!) and got pooped as all heck by 15-20 ft swell. And that's not just any swell: it's middle of the pacific, nothing in it's way, huge, powerful groundswell! What she does to get the shots, eh?!
