From Ancient Routes to Modern Marvels: Discover the Rio-Antirrio Strait The Patras Bridge (Rio-Antirrio Bridge) is located at the strait of Rio-Antirrio, at the transition between the Gulf of Patras and the Gulf of Corinth. The first person to officially cross the Rio-Antirrio Bridge was a torchbearer as part of the Olympic Torch Relay for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. The Rio-Antirrio Bridge is one of the world’s longest multi-span cable-stayed bridges. • It connects the Peloponnese peninsula (Rio) with mainland Greece (Antirrio), near the city of Patras. • Officially opened in August 2004, just before the Athens Olympic Games. • Named after Charilaos Trikoupis, a 19th-century Greek Prime Minister who first proposed the idea of such a bridge.
Whale season in the Tropical North is in full swing with daily humpback sightings. This mother and calf put on a show for passengers and crew aboard dive and snorkel vessel Silverswift as they playfully breached repeatedly out of the water. Watch to see mamma show how it's done! The encounter occurred near Green Island as the vessel was returning from a day at the Outer Reefs. Quicksilver Group Environment and Compliance Manager, and cetacean expert, Phil Coulthard said “Whale season is in full swing and it’s always very exciting to see the humpbacks in our tropical waters. This mother and calf duo have been seen around the same location for several days. We’re seeing the humpbacks almost daily at this time of year. It’s part of their winter migration to our region from the southern oceans of Australia to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.” The sightings are recorded for the GBRMPA’s Eye on the Reef monitoring program. Humpbacks are generally seen at the Great Barrier Reef between the months of June to September with regular sightings near Green Island and at the Outer Reefs, bringing an added bonus for passengers at this time. Thanks to Silverswift marine biologist Teresa Souyet for the great footage.

I’ve had severe allergic reactions to bee stings—so when I heard fake dragonflies might ward them off, I ordered six off Amazon. They’re going up on my sailboat as a kind of quirky defense system. Should I name them? And… what eats dragonflies anyway? 🐝🛥️🐉 This little moment is part of life aboard as I travel Japan’s remote coastlines and explore what it means to live well and live long. From fear of bee stings to going beyond Blue Zones—it’s all part of the adventure. 🎥 Filmed aboard Wahine in one of Japan’s hidden harbors. 📚 Part of the Journey Beyond the Blue Zone series. Comment below if you’ve ever used natural (or unnatural) pest deterrents—or if you have great names for dragonfly bodyguards!
