Jenny Smith and her family (Tomas, Milan (3 yrs old) & Taleia (1 yr old) lived aboard their catamaran sailboat, NautiMermaid, when Hurricane Maria hit leaving them without a home. For several years, Jenny & Tomas worked tirelessly towards actualizing their dream of starting their own business on the island of Vieques -- – when it all shattered before their eyes overnight. Their planned source of income was lost after being on the island for 2 short months prior to the hurricane’s destruction. Thank you to all of you who have been so supportive of my sister during this journey. It has meant so much to her receiving all the positive messages of support from all over the world. These videos have become even more special because they documented this small slice of time where they got to live aboard a catamaran before it was destroyed. Luckily Tomas’s Aunt has a house where they were all able to stay to safely ride out the storm. They are currently residing there with Tomas’s mother and brother (who had the roof ripped off of their home). Tomas has rigged the solar panels from the boat onto the house, so they can run the refrigerator during the day using solar, and run the generator only at night. Like many isolated areas of Puerto Rico, they still do not have consistent running water, hot water for showers, AC, power, and must wait in long gas lines (7+ hours) – in order to obtain the gas needed to keep generators running. Communication is still down on the majority of the island – cellular service & internet is still only intermittently available only from a handful of spots. Additionally, it's mostly a cash only society right now and the bank lines have been monstrous with ATMs only working intermittently. It is heartbreaking to see the devastation that has occurred to this community and worrisome that this island is almost completely dependent on tourism for their local economy. Tomas was born & raised in Vieques; it was part of my sister’s dream to be a part of this island’s community. Witnessing all the destruction that has occurred, the two of them have become dedicated to the rebuilding efforts. avvolgifiocco: (s.m.) (Alberatura e vele) jib furler Sistema utilizzato nelle imbarcazioni moderne per arrotolare le vele di prua (fiocco, genoa, trinchetta) attorno al corrispondente strallo. E' composto da uno strallo libero di ruotare e da un sistema che trasmette il moto rotatorio allo strallo stesso consentendo alla vela di avvolgersi attorno ad esso. Il sistema che imprime la rotazione può essere manuale (un tamburo dove si avvolge una cima che se alata fa girare lo strallo stesso arrotolando la vela) oppure motorizzato (idraulico o elettrico). L'avvolgifiocco è un sistema di uso generalizzato nelle imbarcazioni da crociera ed in quelle da regata atlantica. Consente di navigare con equipaggio ridotto e aumentanto i margini di sicurezza, soprattutto in caso di maltempo. Si chiama anche rollafiocco. avvolgiranda: (s.m.) (Alberatura e vele) mainsail furler Sistema utilizzato nelle imbarcazioni moderne per arrotolare le randa. Due sono i sistemi utilizzati in alternativa nelle moderne imbarcazioni da diporto. Il primo consente di arrotolare la randa attorno al boma (che deve essere di tipo "girevole") il secondo attorno ad un asse girevole posto internamente o fissato esternamente all'albero. Il sistema che imprime la rotazione al boma oppure all'asse girevole parallelo all'albero, può essere manuale (un tamburo dove si avvolge una cima che se alata fa girare il sistema) oppure motorizzato (idraulico o elettrico). L'avvolgiranda è un sistema utilizzato generalmente nelle imbarcazioni da crociera perché consente di navigare con equipaggio ridotto e aumentanto i margini di sicurezza, soprattutto in caso di maltempo e necessità di ridurre la velatura. Si chiama anche rollaranda. Non viene invece usato nelle imbarcazioni da regata perché non consente di portare rande costruite con materiali speciali o con forme particolari che normalmente si usano nelle competizioni.
