One of the few ways to earn money for school and dedication in these areas is to pan for gold. On any one day, there is always at least one member from each family in the jungle searching for that precious mineral. Sometimes they pan with a shovel and metal dish and sometimes they swim using goggles. Depending on the current food situation, it is also common to trade gold directly for commodities such as rice and sugar that can't be grown naturally in these areas.
