We got increasingly frustrated by our small petrol (gas) outboards that we use very infrequently on our dinghies and Chat 18 catamaran. Never quite knowing whether they would start, or how long they would run. Usually because the small jets would clog up, a problem aggravated by the ethanol fuel now used in the UK, USA and elsewhere. So earlier this year we bit the bullet and bought a used Torqeedo 1103 electric outboard. It was on ebay, from "one careful lady owner" - actually the advert said "only used on a fresh water trout farm" which we hoped was much the same thing. And we have been very pleased with it this summer, using it on Sagitta's tender, sometimes for long distances, yet never seeing the charge drop below 80% So we then tried using it on our Chat 18. And immediately discovered two problems, probably common to other small daysailing boats. First, the battery was much larger than the integral petrol fuel tank. So, when tilted up on the swingdown bracket, the Torqeedo hit the tillerbar. That meant we had to use the transom mount, which in turn meant the leg had to be angled back in use to clear the immersed rudder blade. Very inefficient and too close to the surface. And second, when tilted up and turned sideways the tiller control arm would detach - something that doesn't happen with a petrol outboard. So we had to remove it, and then reattach it whenever we wanted to motor. Fortunately Torqeedo has realised that many people have these problems and so supply reasonably priced, extra long cables, not just for the battery but also for the tiller arm. Accordingly we bought a 1.5m (5ft) battery cable and a 5m (16ft) tiller cable. This video shows the results of the first motor, one calm winter evening. I still have to re-route the cables through the back of the cockpit and more permanently mount the tiller arm. The deeper propellor is more efficient and there is no aeration when cornering or in waves. Top speed was very close to 5 knots, about hull speed on an 18ft boat. In reverse speed was about 3 knots. Although it's more awkward to lift the outboard leg without the battery in place it does now fit comfortably below the tillerbar when raised for sailing. So we're very happy so far! For once there is audio on this short video. But even if you turn the volume to high you won't hear the outboard - another bonus! ► Presented as a previewed at the recent Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the VisionF 82 ALU marks a step towards more environmentally-friendly luxury cruising, thanks to a large surface area of solar panels and a powerful battery bank - all capable of powering this multiyacht for 20 hours without need for generator support. It’s worth noting that the aluminum construction incorporates a recyclable material... however, this 82, announced two years ago, is not as virtuous as the collaboration with Silent Yachts would have us believe - it’s primarily powered by traditional internal combustion engines. The layout is customizable, with generous natural lighting thanks to large windows and ultra-comfortable cabins – 195 square feet (18 m²) for the Owner’s Suite. As for the aft cockpit, it can be transformed into a huge bathing platform thanks to the hydraulic platform and folding bulwarks. Two units have already been delivered, and two more are scheduled for delivery this spring. ► TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Builder: VisionF Yachts Length: 80’9” (24.6 m) Beam: 32’6” (9.9 m) Draft: 31” (0.8 m) Light displacement: 56 t Engines: 2 x 600 or 800 HP Maximum speed: 16 to 21 knots Fuel: 1,480 to 2,650 US gal (5,600 to 10,000 l) Water: 1,215 US gal (4,600 l) ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 500 multihulls tests! It would be wonderful to win, so please cast your vote here: https://awards.classicboat.co.uk/restoration-of-the-year-under-40ft/ Our friends over at Berthon Boat Company have been nominated for the Classic Boat Awards, in the category ‘Restored sailing vessel under 40ft' for the extensive restoration of Brynhilde, a 1958 Fred Parker 10-metre wooden Bermudian sloop. https://www.youtube.com/c/BerthonBoats This is a testament to the extensive refit, expertly performed by Berthon’s highly skilled team. Well done to all who were involved in returning this beautiful classic sailing yacht to its former glory. The following series captures the extensive restoration of Brynhilde, a 1958 Fred Parker 10-metre wooden Bermudian sloop, who arrived here at Berthon on the 4th October 2019. She has been in her present family’s ownership for the past 40 years, competing in the Hill Robinson sponsored regattas in the south of France for over a decade, and most recently sailed at the 2021 Monaco Classic Week – La Belle Classe. Arriving for a deck replacement but undergoing broad further works, Brynhilde is a beautiful example of a timeless yacht refitted to an incredibly high standard. Traditional skills were used throughout this project. A talented team of Shipwrights, Engineers, Electricians, Riggers and Painters led by Dave Bolwell, more fondly known as Curly, dedicated thousands of hours to the careful refurbishment of a well-loved family yacht. - Restoration Playlist https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLebSOrLsZM0Rr8Ca3NsnONk6tSqyUxQHt - Project Overview https://youtu.be/PKEd8WPQMj8 PART 1 - Arrival & Inspection https://youtu.be/zuZ-W80fBIk PART 2 - Exterior Restoration https://youtu.be/tw2LO662mB4 PART 3 - New Deck https://youtu.be/hh1IVTRsHDg PART 4 - Interior Restoration https://youtu.be/iiB8_5Q-X_w PART 5 - Paint and Finishing Touches https://youtu.be/g6pXaG6g43k PART 6 - Launch & Stepping her mast https://youtu.be/4eNyqHMY8ds PART 7 - Sea Trials https://youtu.be/Xod0o1YF7vU - Deck Teaser https://youtu.be/heYt0sNAkxg Paint Teaser https://youtu.be/qE12_zIOiE0 Launch Teaser https://youtu.be/tVSXG7igTIU Mast Stepping Teaser https://youtu.be/VmaCrYZ5nkE Sea Trials Teaser https://youtu.be/Ic7Qlh_cRn4 #YachtRestoration #YachtRefit #ClassicYacht #WoodenYacht #BoatRestoration #MarineEngineering #TeakDeck #YachtPaint #Woodwork #ClassicBoat #BoatBuilding #Shipwright #Lymington #Sailing #Berthon
