We caught up with ACMG guide Jan Neuspiel between trips to Bella Coola, and asked him about his custom powder skis. They feature west coast raven design created by our favourite local K’omoks and Kwakwaka’wakw artist, Karver Everson. So you might be wondering, who is Jan? Jan has been guiding and teaching for more than 35 years all over the world with a particular focus on the Himalayan region for about half that time. He spent six years living in Nepal (he speaks Nepali!) and eleven years running a helicopter skiing operation in northern India. Since 2006 Jan has also been the Head Guide for Bella Coola Helisports' heliskiing operations in the Mount Waddington area of the BC Coast Range. Closer to home, Jan founded two of Vancouver Island's most familiar alpine institutions: 1) Island Alpine Guides, which is Vancouver Island's premiere mountain school and guide service. 2) The Vancouver Island Avalanche Centre, where he acted as lead forecaster until recently. It's a homegrown and grassroots effort supported entirely by local businesses and users. They provide avalanche safety information for Vancouver Islanders who recreate in the backcountry in winter, predominantly via the Vancouver Island Avalanche Bulletin. His breadth of experience, his thoughtful kindness and his spirit of adventure make Jan a natural leader. He is a true inspiration and we are so thankful for his influence on the alpine culture here in our community, and for his positive contributions to mountain culture at large. Jag får ofta frågor om hur vi har råd att leva som vi gör, vad vi jobbar med och vad livet på båt kostar. Så här kommer en ärlig sammanfattning av våra första två år. Först det många missar: Vi har lagt cirka 3,14 miljoner kronor på att köpa, utrusta och förbereda båten för ett liv till havs. När båten väl var redo har våra löpande levnadskostnader landat på ungefär 16 000 kr per månad för två vuxna och tre barn. 🏝️ Marina – 1 200 kr 🍽️ Restaurang – 3 300 kr 🛒 Livsmedel – 6 000 kr 👕 Kläder & skor – 500 kr 📚 Undervisning – 300 kr 🧭 Turism – 500 kr ⛽ Bensin/Diesel – 1 400 kr 🔥 Gasol – 200 kr 💊 Läkemedel – 300 kr 🛡️ Försäkringar – 550 kr 📶 Internet & telefoni – 1 200 kr ⚓ Incheckning/Utcheckning/Agent – 200 kr 📱 Abonnemang – 250 kr 💰 Summa – 16 000 kr / månad Hur får vi det att gå ihop? Vi driver ett aktiebolag från båten där vi båda arbetar, men i dagsläget tar vi varken ut lön eller utdelning. Vår livsstil finansieras därför inte främst av nuvarande inkomster. Istället är resultatet av mer än 10 års sparande där vi investerat omkring 50 % av våra inkomster varje månad. Idag lever vi delvis på avkastning från våra investeringar och delvis på vårt sparkapital. Det här är inte ett sätt att leva som uppstod över en natt. Det är resultatet av många års planering, sparande och prioriteringar. Vad förvånar dig mest: att båten kostade 3,14 miljoner att köpa och utrusta eller att vi idag lever på 16 000 kr i månaden som familj på fem?
