Corti Creare
The Bottom Up Crew were a little rusty in there first major racing weekend, with the breeze up and the co-ordination between the crew members slightly off they put there J109 on it side in back to back gybes. The video footage always help with the debrief which enable us to correct our mistakes getting on on point for the rest of the weekend. The less than perfect gybes show how forgiving the J109 is even when the breeze is up. After the broach letting both the sheet and kicker go and putting the wheel hard to leeward is all that you need to get the boat off its ear and heading back in the right direction. The major mistake with both of the gybes was the time it took to get the main sheet across. The delay in getting the main across caused the spinnaker to set too early on the new gybe, without the main creating a wind shadow over it there was too much power in the kit which started the broach up, which was made ever worse once the main flipped across. The second change which may have avoid the broach would have been to quickly ease the new sheet 4 or 5 feet the second the spinnaker filled on the new side, this is the next best thing to reduce the power as the kite sets on the new gybe. The redline racing team dusted themselves off and pushed hard enough across the weekend to end with a 3, 2 and a 1 which was enough the take the overall victory in the annual Strangford Lough Narrows regatta. We hope you got some value out of these back to back gybes, learning what not to do.

New Leopard 50 Owner's Review now up at 'kats.co/50L'! Or head to our profile for the link. ▫️ Thanks to Sailing Dracarys for helping out. This is a good 'un with lots of useful insights on this boat or any cruising catamaran for that matter. ▫️ Here are some excerpts: ▫️ Kats: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your boat, Dracarys? SD: Dracarys is my first sailboat, and to date, I’ve taken her 14,000nm, including multiple trips between the Gulf side of Florida and the Chesapeake Bay, Mexico, and the Exumas. I ordered her after gaining a grand total of about three weeks of sailing experience – one week of ASA classes and two charters in the BVI. The largest boat I’d owned previously was a 23-foot wakeboarding boat. ▫️ Kats:What’s she like in heavy weather / a blow / big seas? SD: The most severe weather I’ve experienced so far was a on a sail from Key West to Sarasota – about 30 hours. There was a small craft advisory issued; winds and waves were at about 50-60 degrees off the nose at around 30kts and nine feet, respectively. . To me, she felt like a bulldozer running through marshmallow fluff. I don’t have the experience to know if that’s normal, but I was very pleased! There was minimal creaking and banging. Overall, the boat gave me the impression that she didn’t even notice the conditions. ▫️ Kats: What type of anchor/weight/chain length did you go for? SD: I chose a Rocna 40kg (88lb) anchor – I think it’s the largest/heaviest anchor that fits without modifications to the anchor roller/mount area. For chain, I went with 240 feet of Maggi 10mm. Why a random number like 240 feet? Because that’s what was available. ▫️ Kats: How was the buying process with Leopard or their dealer? SD: The buying process was uncomplicated and, for the most part, smooth. There’s an options changes “lock out” date that wasn’t communicated to me up front, so that created a tiny amount of stress, but all ended well. No question that I’d buy again. ▫️ ▫️ ▫️ #multihulls #leopardcatamarans #sailing #catamarans #sailinglife #multihull #catamaran #sailinginstagram #multihullsailing #sailboat #katamarans #sailingcatamarans @leopardcatamarans #leopard50
