This takes more time, but sometimes insisting on not giving the police officer petty cash will make them drop the issue all together.⁠ ⁠ Finally, don't let the news scare you. Are there certain parts of Mexico that are dangerous? Yes, of course, just like any other country, but Baja is pretty well protected as a tourism hot spot.⁠
